"Turning a human being into a thing is almost always the first step toward justifying violence against that person. We see this with racism, we see it with homophobia, we see it with terrorism. It's always the same process, the person is dehumanized and violence then becomes inevitable." Thank you Upworthy for shining an important light on Jean Kilbourne 's work. …see more
Imagine the JOY of this arriving on your doorstep in the midst of 2020. As this year's host, I was so delighted to experience the same gala-in-a-box each finalist received for the #AdobeExperienceMakerAwards . And yesterday, I was SO happy to be able to give the Adobe Experience Cloud team a well-earned shoutout in Katie Deighton 's great article in The Wall Street Journal about brands innovating IRL events into mailed experiences. 3 things #B2B content should make clear: 1. Your expertise 2. Your ability to give HOPE to a buyer struggling 3. Your vision for THEIR future Gartner found that 68% of the B2B buying process has no direct involvement with the vendor. The content and ideas we're producing in-market are stand-ins for our people. Audit that experience from the buyer’s POV and ask: Is the quality of your thinking clear? #MultilevelMarketing is big business... and a big scam. According to the Direct Selling Association, a lobbying group for MLMs, the industry produced $35.4 billion in retail sales in 2018. What is not emphasized is that only a handful of recruiters are successful; one study by AARP found 73% percent of participants either don’t make money or lose money. That number could be as high as 99%, according to a report by a longtime consumer advocate who studied MLMs. …see more
"Over the last decade, the most sold images from Getty for the search term “women” have evolved from photos of mostly naked models to active women to ones in which women’s appearance is beside the point." BUT "It’s not good enough for companies to just say, ‘Hey, let’s put some diverse models in our projects,’” Ms. Grossman said. “None of this matters unless it’s also about who you’re hiring, the opportunities you’re giving people, who you’re paying.” …see more

One of the issues Netflix faced when it first launched streaming in 2007 was consumer access. To start, it was only available via PCs. Next, it was available on Macs followed by Microsoft 's Xbox 360, then Sony 's PS3, then Nintendo 's Wii. The strategy was to get Netflix on every A/V device that connected to the internet, which meant working with device (e.g. Blu-ray player) manufacturers to make that happen. This is why no one ever saw a production run of this, the Netflix Player. What you see here is a very expensive non-working model that was used for promotional photos and videos (that were scrapped). If it looks familiar, that's because it was spun out as The Netflix Player by Roku Inc. as Roku Founder and CEO, and inventor of the DVR, Anthony Wood had been lured to Netflix to create the player. The rest, as they say, is history. h/t to my Kaizen Creative Partnership partner Gary Kenji McMath for the photo. #Netflix #Roku #streaming #OTT #Microsoft #XBOX #PS3 #Sony #Nintendo #Wii #streaminghistory …see more
Great article from Justin Bariso . All feedback is a gift. It took me a while at Netflix under the constant advisement of former CMO Leslie Kilgore and former Chief Talent Officer Patty McCord to realize this. The first step is losing your ego so that you can ingest and honestly evaluate the feedback. Even purely negative feedback is a gift in that tells you that you may not be in the right place of employment. Give this a read. …see more

For anyone who has ever asked me why I spent nearly a decade in #EastAfrica , PLEASE read this story about journalist Verah Vashti Okeyo . Her resume is impressive-she's one of the best #health and #science reporters in #Kenya , and has earned a degree in #globalhealth #communications from the The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) . She's also a reporter at Nation Media Group 's DAILY NATION newspaper in #Nairobi . But I honestly had no idea of the range of enormous obstacles and wrenching losses Verah had faced--and overcome--until I read this story. I never knew that my respect and praise for the commitment of young African journalists could deepen, until this very moment. #Africa #journalism #Africanmedia #womenjournalists #womeninmedia #strength #courage #wisom #womenleaders …see more

Ahead of the upcoming #H3Africa Conference in Tunis, African Academy of Sciences H3Africa Programme Manager Jenniffer Mabuka-Maroa PhD has produced this compelling commentary about the need for more genomics research from the African continent, For example, did you know that since completion of the Human Genome project in April of 2003, Africa has shockingly contributed a mere 2 percent to the world's available genomics data?
