According to a new S&P Global Market Intelligence study over a 17-year period female CFOs generated a combined $1.8 trillion more in profit over the sector’s average profit and a 6-8% higher profitability. The data also highlighted that female CEOs - within 24 months - achieved a 20% greater increase in stock price compared to their male counterparts. 🤩 Wow! Solid data and performance indicators! ✅👌🏻✅ Thank you Mona Ameli , one of the most impactful female executives and respected leaders, for writing such a rich article and creating awareness on how involving more women in C-suite and board roles have strategic, financial, and cultural impacts that organizations should pay attention to in order to stay competitive and relevant. #internationalwomensday #womenleaders #femaleCEO #femaleleadership #csuite #boardmembers #boardofdirectors #financialresults #culturaldiversity #genderbalance #genderequality …see more

A Few of My Favorite Things In the midst of this (hopefully) once in a lifetime pandemic, there are, surprisingly, loads of good-news stories including: -The story of the oft-shunned African migrants in Italy helping provide fresh vegetables to...Italians! —The story of a low-income-serving grocery store owner, giving away groceries to all his customers...and he plans to do it again. Why? Because he said, ‘It’s the right thing to do.’ —Many local stories of people sharing their bottled water, TP and other items with total strangers. —Stories of families singing together. Friends connecting virtually and neighbors helping neighbors like never before. This gives me hope and a warm heart. That said, in my ‘Least Favorite’ column, there are still states that do not require ‘shelter-in-place,’ and churches encouraging large crowds of people. Here’s the thing about diseases and viruses specifically: they are equal-opportunity infectious agents. If they had personalities, you’d find them to be non-partisan, non-sexist, non-racist, non-religious, non-anything. They love everything and everybody. And that’s the problem. So let’s get more good stories of people (and leaders) being smart about social distancing and less stories of people believing they can rise above this virus. …see more
While grocery shopping, get your sprained ankle or diabetes treated too because now you can get full medical care at a few Walmarts. And they have separate doors and decor, much like any professional medical office. Walmart Health is partnering at the facility with “several on-the-ground health providers to be a first-of-its-kind health center to deliver primary and urgent care, labs, X-ray and diagnostics, counseling, dental, optical and hearing services all in one facility,” the retail giant said in a statement. Pricing will also be “transparent” regardless of a patient's insurance status, noted the company. How do you feel about getting healthcare services from a non-traditional provider? I think the market has already spoken on this: the general public is already making decisions based on convenience and price. Loyalty to a specific brand (eg Mayo Clinic), and specific doctor, just doesn’t matter so much, especially to younger people. No doubt that healthcare services are getting baked into our shopping lives and blurring the lines between ‘medical’ services and activities of daily life. Selected excerpt: “Walmart is a sleeping giant, and they're putting together all the pieces to be able to move big in healthcare when they want to,” …see more
Small But (actually helpful) Tips to be More Merry/Happy...Or at Least Less-Sad. Often ‘tips’ and other ‘self-help’ offerings are, well, trite or silly or just generally, not useful. This list, in contrast, is useful! I absolutely agree with the idea of making—and fostering—local, ‘lite’ friendships. (I disagree with calling these casual or lite friendships ‘weak ties,’ but we get the point.) I find that I really enjoy being “known” and feeling “part of the fabric” of my community and work place. Making local ‘ties’ is really useful whether that is at work where you engage in chit-chat with other staff you don’t know very well, or at your local gym or coffee shop. The exercise is to ‘purposefully’ extend yourself to be better known and ‘seen.’ Key take away: try to extend yourself to others just a little bit more and in turn, you’ll feel more part of your work place and community. Be kind to yourself. Be aware of others. And Happy Holidays! …see more
It’s Finally Here: Machines As Doctor and Diagnostician Researchers found that deep learning algorithms correctly detected disease in 87% of cases, compared to 86% for healthcare professionals. Wow. Many of us who follow ‘deep learning’ and AI markets have seen this in radiological images (X-rays), and now there is evidence that machine-based data accumulation can ‘crunch’ and analyze information to provide better diagnoses than a doctor who has seen hundreds (or thousands) of patients with a similar disease or problem. Think of what this can do to bring more reliable diagnoses to patients and, think about how such technologies can help patients in under-resourced areas get diagnosed and treated sooner. Talk about Democratizing health care! This is a huge leap forward for Public Health. Now....how do we get Humans to trust Machines?? Selected Excerpt: “"Machines... can have a massive impact on problems in healthcare, big and small, but unless we can convince clinicians and the public of its safety and ability then it won't be much use to anybody..” …see more
What’s Wrong With Me? You Might Be Lonely As we all knew, being sad, anxious, lonely is bad for our health. People who are lonely live shorter lives and are more at risk for chronic illnesses like heart disease, depression, and dementia. Weirdly, even with so many on-line connections, a full fifth of Americans feel lonely. Ways to feel less isolated and lonely? Connecting into your ‘real community,’ yet that can be challenging for many, especially older people or people who don’t have a lot of extra time. So health insurance companies are adding ‘togetherness’ care plans which help connect patients with services and, well, help them feel less lonely! Why are insurance companies doing this? (You know there is a bottom line reason ...) Turns out if you treat Loneliness like a chronic condition, you can reduce unnecessary hospital readmissions—hence saving the insurance companies loads of money. So this is a story of ‘doing well by doing good.’ Selected Excerpt: "For too long issues like social connection have been looked at as soft subjects—the stuff that we'll get to if we can get to it, after we get people the procedures and medications they need...” …see more
*Update on testing my new Viatom * I’m about to get a Withings BPM Core, which is also a blood pressure monitor with an ECG just as Viatom’s latest product I’d received. So far I’m satisfied with the Viatom, but I’m curious to compare and contrast these two and tell you all about it! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Viatom was the first manufacturer whose product made me feel like the tricorder from Star Trek could actually become a reality. Now they’ve sent me their newest product for testing, and all I can say is that they came up with a great idea again: it’s basically a blood pressure monitor on the arm and an ECG when held in both hands. Brilliant! It has a digital screen and of course a connected app as well. I’m going to crosscheck it with my other devices and will also write a more detailed review for the website, but as of now, I’m happy to be able to test it. https://lnkd.in/eNKGaE4 #reviewcomingsoon #viatom #withings #bloodpressuremonitor #ecg #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #health #healthy …see more

I get this question often: How should the elderly deal with digital health technologies? Although I'd love to answer ‘Just teach them how to use these technologies’ but in fact, the solution lies in the design of these technologies. "Although 77% of people over the age of 55 say they want to age in place, only 50% believe they will, because of barriers such as home maintenance, lack of transportation and mobility, inadequate preparation, and age-related accessibility. “To meet these new challenges – and opportunities – we need transformative innovation in senior care,” the authors wrote in the report. “Digital health is poised to offer critical solutions.” #seniorhealth #seniorcare #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology …see more
Over the past few months, some shifts in healthcare came even closer to reality than we expected. Doctors use way more technologies than half a year ago - they have to. Whenever I ask people about the first thought that comes to their mind when they hear the term artificial intelligence, most of them mention destruction, the Terminator and losing control. Maybe we watch too many dystopian sci-fi? It seems that readers of The Medical Futurist trust that life is worth living above 80 years, much more than an average person. The vast majority of you who voted in our poll would like to live for more than 80 years (many of you even until eternity!), while according to a PEW survey, most people don't wish to stay alive above 78 years. But what if old age didn't essentially come with health decline and suffering? We explored the possibilities of that in our latest article - would you reconsider your life expectations after reading it? #futureofhealthcare #life #future #longevity #digitalhealth …see more
This year we looked into digital health companies addressing real-world needs. We focused on businesses touching upon a patient need or a healthcare issue that has not been solved before in any other way. What kind of companies are we talking about? - Bonzun developed a digital midwife, which the company aims to bring to developing countries to save the lives of mothers. - Circulation enables non-emergency medical transportation via its platform optimizing medical processes. - ReWalk Robotics develops exoskeletons that enable people with disabilities to use their limbs for walking again.
