I feel like we need to rethink the role of IT departments in Companies. It's gone from a support function, to arguably the most important department ( tied with HR) . We have to start finding ways for new technology, new thinking, new processes, new applications & new tools to empower us to do more. Rather than it being a role based on fixing what's not working and reducing risk.

I started my first company out of college. And I failed. Miserably. Burned through my savings, my relationships went to shit, my team fell apart. I was renting out my extra rooms in my apartment just to stay afloat. And now things are going well on attempt #3. Two years later I’ve spoken on large stages, I have my TEDx coming up, was named 25 under 25 in Wisconsin, and my company is growing quickly. It would be easy to say that the most rewarding moment was that when I look back I could say that I did it. Or that I proved people wrong. But that wouldn’t be true. I think the most rewarding moment for me was 1). when I realized that someone like me was capable of being successful and 2). when I realized that I’m nowhere near done yet. There is no such thing as “making it” and I don’t think there should be. As you grow and evolve so should your dreams. But if you haven’t already know this 1). someone like you CAN be successful and 2). you’re nowhere near done yet. I didn’t know how to tell her. But this assignment also shows that school is too focused on: EDUCATION leads to A JOB. This is not true anymore. The reality is: -The average person has 14 different careers in their lives. -The average multi-millionaire has seven different sources of income. So anything that is “one job focused” will create a generation of kids that will learn the hard way that life doesn’t work like that. The world changes fast. The jobs I do now didn’t exist when I was 13. And the jobs she will do don’t exist now. So learning how to learn is more important than memorizing facts. I believe that there is no right or wrong answer to this and it totally depends on a person's current situation and long-term goals. There pros and cons to both options. 1. Starting a company is like jumping off a cliff and assembling a plane on the way down, according to Reid Hoffman. I agree with his analogy. Starting up is hard and too many wrong moves in a row can lead to a crash landing. But many well-executed moves and your startup can soar and succeed. Some people are ok with ambiguity and can thrive in these high risk, high reward environments. 2. Getting an MBA can be compared to spending time sharpening an axe before going to cut a tree.
