Interestingly, Netflix, which began as a DVD-delivery service, is widely credited for putting video rental stores like Blockbuster Video out of business. In 1997, Steve Jobs returned to Apple, the company he cofounded, and proceeded to lead one of the most remarkable turnarounds in history. As CEO, he brought Apple back from the brink of bankruptcy, aiding its transformation into the most valuable company on the planet. All of this success is even more impressive when we consider that, just twelve years earlier, Jobs was forced out of the company he helped build. Notably, when Jobs left Apple and started building NeXT, a number of high-ranking Apple employees followed their former boss. At the time, Jobs was a cocky, thirty-one-year-old multimillionaire who was almost always convinced he was right. He was harsh and demanding, and he could be very demeaning. So why would this group of sharp, focused individuals leave secure positions to continue working with him? Read the answer--and the lessons we can learn from it--in chapter one of EQ Applied: The Real-World Guide to Emotional Intelligence. Facebook recently shared its favorite interview question with LinkedIn: "On your very best day at work--the day you come home and think you have the best job in the world--what did you do that day?" You might be surprised by this question. After all, it's very subjective, and doesn't really focus on a person's skills or abilities. But this question's not just smart--it's emotionally intelligent. (Read the three reasons why in today's column.) #recruiting #interviews #hiring #EmotionalIntelligence #leadership #management #BestAdvice #BusinessIntelligence #careers #Facebook #EQApplied #MakeEmotionsWorkForYouNotAgainstYou …see more

POP QUIZ: What do you think is the best motivator for employees? a. cash b. free pizza c. praise and commendation Dan Ariely, Duke professor of psych. and behavioral economics, shared an experiment in which employees working at a semi-conductor factory were promised 1 of 3 things if they could assemble a certain number of chips per day: • A cash bonus of about $30 • A voucher for a free pizza • A complimentary text message of “Well done!” from the boss Interestingly, pizza was the top motivator on day 1—increasing productivity by 6.7 percent over the control group. This is surprising considering the cash only motivated a 4.9 percent increase...and actually resulted in a 6.5 percent drop in productivity for the week. But even more interesting was what turned out to be the biggest motivator: The compliment. Now, if the promise of a simple text message from the boss can increase productivity, can you imagine what real, sincere, and authentic praise would do? Read more about how to make YOUR praise authentic in my book: "EQ Applied: The Real-World Guide to Emotional Intelligence." https://amzn.to/2sxFLho #EmotionalIntelligence #leadership #management #PersonalDevelopment #BestAdvice #BusinessIntelligence #careers #culture #EQApplied #MakeEmotionsWorkForYouNotAgainstYou …see more

Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. The greatest teachers are masters of repetition. Just think of how many times your parents had to tell you the same thing before you really got it. Or pay attention to how great orators periodically repeat a key phrase, almost like the hook or chorus to a great song. (Think of Martin Luther King Jr.’s skilled use of that single phrase: “I have a dream.") Mastering the art of repetition can be challenging, lest you appear stiff or rigid. But while repetition of a key phrase can be powerful, you can also reframe your main points by using expressions like the following: • In other words (or, In essence) . . . • What I’m trying to say is... • Here’s the point (or, Here’s the takeaway) . . . This technique allows you to repeat key points while maintaining variety. It also puts you in control of what your listeners are most likely to remember. Everyone wants to benefit from empathy. We yearn for others to consider our perspective and feelings--so why do we often fail to do the same for them? For one thing, it takes time & effort to understand how and why others feel the way they do. Frankly, we aren’t willing to invest those resources for too many people. And even when we’re motivated to show empathy, doing so isn't easy. But learn we must; otherwise, our relationships deteriorate. As one person remains fixated on the other’s failings, the result is a mental and emotional standoff where everyone sticks to their guns, no problems get solved, and situations appear irreconcilable. But taking the initiative to show empathy can break the cycle--because when a person feels understood, they are more likely to reciprocate the effort and try harder, too. The result? A trusting relationship where both parties are motivated to give the other person the benefit of the doubt and forgive minor failings. You can read more about HOW to do this in Ch 5 of my new book, "EQ Applied: The Real-World Guide to Emotional Intelligence": https://amzn.to/2sxFLho #Empathy #EmotionalIntelligence #EQ #leadership #management #BestAdvice #relationships #EQApplied #MakeEmotionsWorkForYouNotAgainstYou …see more

"In the busyness that was just the order of the day less than two months ago, many of us have forgotten how to play. Play is the food for the spirit. My colleague in Shanghai  Jonathan Woetzel  and his team at the McKinsey Global Institute spent months sizing up how dozens of current smart city tools can perform in different urban settings.  Its latest report, "Smart cities: Digital solutions for a more livable future," finds these tools can deliver tangible results for residents: reducing fatalities by 8-10 percent, lowering the number of crime incidents by 30-40 percent, accelerating emergency response times by 20-35 percent--and yes, shaving 15–30 minutes off the average commute. https://lnkd.in/eBtPiY2 #smartcities #urbanplanning #urbandesign #bigdata …see more
