This is a solid, and I'd say and fairly accurate, interview with Netflix CEO Reed Hastings . The company culture comes off a bit rough but then it always has. It's not for everyone. But in my eleven years there, I saw the culture strip away restrictive policies and politics as it helped the company punch well above its weight. Worth a read this weekend. #netflix #companyculture …see more
Y'all know I love a good list. Here's some practical advice to help you make a better impression at work without much effort.
After seeing yet another round of sturm and drang about a company changing their logo, I thought I'd outline some of the main reasons why companies do that at all (spoiler: two are good reasons, four are bad reasons). #brand #logodesign #logos #slack #netflix #airbnb #uber #pepsi #apple #design …see more

Loved this FastCompany piece from Bianca Reed: "When you have to fight through the gut-wrenching irrational feeling of incompetence or self-doubt, let this be your soul-soothing mantra: “You were never the impostor. Looks like there are even more benefits to working from home than we thought. This piece posits that "Remote work can reduce pressure to conform, allowing employees be themselves—and more comfortable to think outside the box." Spending this morning attending the Foreign Policy Magazine #HerPower2020 high-level digital summit. It’s an important opportunity to hear crucial discussions about #womensleadership and #genderequity . This afternoon, I’ll pop in to the #CityOfTomorrow #RealEstate summit sponsored by the 92nd Street Y in New York, to watch myself moderate a taped panel about #socialisolation during #COVID19 . It was a great conversation with Emiliana Simon-Thomas , Science Director at the University of California, Berkeley ’s Greater Good Science Center, computer scientist Maja Mataric of the University of Southern California and Brian Geyser, APRN-BC, MSN of Inspīr Health. It’s important to stay engaged and informed even during challenging times, and #technology has helped me maintain my edge. #womenempowerment #gender #moderator #leadershipdevelopement #skillsdevelopment …see more
For #FlashbackFriday : Picture it—October 1994, The National Press Club in #WashingtonDC . I had just started my job as a reporter for #KnightRidder Washington weeks before Nelson Mandela was scheduled to speak. When I told my sister Julie about the event, she automatically declared that she would be flying in from our hometown in Southern Illinois to join me at that luncheon. I didn’t even know if I could get her a ticket, but you didn’t say “no” to Julie. You just had one job to do...figure it out. She came, we saw, I conquered by sneaking a camera into the reception. So as I recall how much Julie loved visiting me in Washington, I figured she needed to be in on the triumphant return. #windbeneathmywings …see more

At Women Deliver 2019, there are a lot of important conversations happening around #maternalhealth and #midwifery . That's happening in part because the World Health Organization has designated 2020 as "The Year of the Nurse and the Midwife," acknowledging the critically important roles both professions play in #globalhealth and #globaldevelopment . #WD2019 #reproductivehealth #reproductivejustice #HealthForall https://lnkd.in/eaEAi_G …see more
You could hear a pin drop during Edna Adan Ismail ’s remarks at the #WomenWhoLead event. I’ll never forget how the women in her family gave her parents their condolences as she was headed to the #UK to begin her #midwifery training. They believed 17 year old Edna was wasting her time AND her family’s money. She later became First Lady of #Somaliland , the country’s first female Health Minister and Foreign Minister—and she built a #maternity hospital that has delivered 23,000 moms. So I guess Edna’s family’s investment in #girlchildeducation paid off, wouldn’t you agree? Women Deliver #maternalhealth #globalhealth #infanthealth …see more
