I've wanted to learn to code for a long time and last week I spent the day at Code Fellows in Seattle in their 101 course. It was awesome. For all non technical "tech" entrepreneurs I highly recommend digging in and learning how to build applications. It was not only inspiring but gave me a strong appreciation for the complexity of technology that we build at EveryMove, Inc. . Kudos to Jeff Malek and his team. Great work. …see more

So I returned to Canada from the United States last night, and the flight home was the quietest I’ve ever experienced. Nobody dared to cough! As we de-planed, I thanked the pilot for bringing us home and surprised myself when I started to tear up. I didn’t realize until that moment how profoundly grateful I am to be back in Canada. 🇨🇦 On a sillier note, my husband Louie accidentally took two and a half photos of himself at the Nexus kiosk. As a result we were standing just after midnight in a long line with a foreboding F4 on our customs printout when everyone else seemed to have 85 or 81 and half a Louie in the place where my photo should have been. We were afraid we might be forced to return to the kiosk to get it right and line up again in a place with little social distancing, but when we reached the customs official he looked at us with a smile and said, “Somebody doesn’t like to share the spotlight!” Even in the midst of a pandemic, we can find opportunities to lift each other up with humour. …see more

Elon Musk sent a companywide email to Tesla employees last week claiming that the company was poised to break the record for vehicle deliveries--if employees rallied hard. The immediate impact of the leaked email was clear: Tesla shares rose for the first time in a week. In monetary terms, that led to a nearly $500 million bump in the company's market cap. At first glance, one might consider this an evil stroke of genius. To understand why, it helps to consider Musk's history with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Musk's ability to communicate w/ the public is severely restricted due to his past actions and recent settlement w/ the SEC. This email would be a clear violation of Musk's settlement-- except for one rather large detail: It wasn't a public statement. It was an internal communication, meant to be seen only by Tesla employees. Or was it? Thomas Keller has developed a reputation as one of the most skilled culinary artists in the world. But a few years ago, the lead restaurant critic for the New York Times made headlines when he published a harsh criticism of Keller’s New York eatery Per Se, describing some of the dishes he sampled as “random,” “flavorless,” “purposeless,” and “rubbery." How would Keller, a noted perfectionist and honored chef, respond to being thoroughly bashed? He apologized. “We pride ourselves on maintaining the highest standards, but we make mistakes along the way,” Keller admitted in a statement on his website. “We are sorry we let you down.” In the world of fine dining, where top chefs are often deified, Keller’s response was a breath of fresh air. At the same time, it revealed on a larger stage what many closer associates of Keller saw as a major strength of character: his ability to benefit from negative feedback. Read more about how YOU can benefit from negative feedback in my new book, "EQ Applied: The Real-World Guide to Emotional Intelligence": https://amzn.to/2sxFLho #EmotionalIntelligence #leadership #management #BestAdvice #careers #BusinessIntelligence #communication #EQApplied #PersonalDevelopment #MakeEmotionsWorkForYouNotAgainstYou …see more
Despite many researchers’ preference to abbreviate emotional intelligence as EI in studies and academic journals, the term EQ (shorthand for “emotional intelligence quotient”) has become popular and easily recognizable in multiple languages. This makes sense. In sports, we refer to those who have a superior understanding of the game as having a high IQ (“they have a high basketball or football IQ”), meaning they understand the rules and strategy of the game. This ability isn’t really something that’s measured, but it’s practical and easy to understand. In a similar way, when we speak about a person’s EQ, we mean their ability to understand emotions and how they work. But the value of that knowledge is limited if it can’t be put to use. In other words, true emotional intelligence = EQ, applied. So, how can you build not only your EQ, but your ability to apply that EQ? And, can EQ be measured? I answer these questions in my new book, "EQ Applied: The Real-World Guide to Emotional Intelligence": https://amzn.to/2sxFLho #EmotionalIntelligence #empathy #leadership #management #BestAdvice #careers #BusinessIntelligence #communication #relationships #EQApplied #MakeEmotionsWorkForYouNotAgainstYou …see more
