We are experiencing what some call a "tsunami of technological change," the effects of which may be as disruptive for us as the industrial revolution was for people in the 19th century. My thoughts on the subject.... #future #workforcedevelopment #forbes …see more
So I am sitting in a crowd of strangers, not in NE. Someone asks what I do. I say, which is partly accurate as of this moment in time, I am trying to save a small non elite college. I explain that despite the current protestations and accusations, I left it after 8 years in good shape and fully capable survival. In the 4 plus years since I left, it tanked. And it fell precipitously in the last 2 years. Someone said, that’s impossible. Colleges don’t crater and suddenly announce they’re shutting. Something’s wrong. Something happened in the recent past. I said, well, maybe but more likely something didn’t happen: fundraising, grant raising, admissions, athletic recruiting, poor acquisitions. But, I explained I hadn’t seen financials or data or what was filed with accreditors. The group looked at me quizzically and I just looked at them and said, beats me. My job now is to try to save it. Anyone here have 3 million and want a college named for them? A few laughs and no immediate takers but one fellow said: I bet there is someone like that. I said: I know. I am looking for him or her right now. Funny how life is, isn’t it? What if one of those people was that one? Folks: if you don’t try to save a place it will never be saved. …see more
I just want to say as the sun rises again that I feel sick to my stomach. Truly sick. I can't even turn on TV or eat or listen or read. The debacle of yesterday -- and I missed the last hour --- will forever change how we view victims and those accused. And we all know someone is lying. Both people who testified can't be truth tellers. I know who I think is lying. But, how people can obfuscate truth and play off emotions and act indignant -- professing that religion and religious schools carry righteousness in and of themselves -- is offensive no matter what. I'd like to remind people that good folks can do bad things. And bad people can do good things. And, religion isn't like a vaccine -- religious people and doctors and teachers abuse children and when they do, those acts are buried and the victims' words discarded and truth is hard to find and even harder to address. Everyone here can judge for themselves whether politics trumped truth. That is my line for today: politics (whichever side you are on) trumped truth --- in every sense. …see more
Here is what is worrying me (among other things): recommendation letters. There is a history of such letters being written for teachers to get new positions despite the fact that these teachers have abused students. We often are less than honest (if omission counts) when we write letters of recommendation. We assume receivers of letters can read between the lines and know that we are not truly recommending someone but we are being cautious to avoid charges of defamation, libel and other legal risks. So, posit this hypothetical: write a recommendation letter for Bill O'Reilly. What should it say? Would all references to sexual abuse/harassment be absent from such a letter? Ponder this conundrum; recommendation letters are commonplace. …see more

As a healthcare professional I'm a big fan of science! I'm also a big fan of making sure that organizations can effectively implement new knowledge and patient care solutions. I've been working with a group of health care professionals to help organizations prepare for the COVID-19 vaccine. Please take a moment to read this overview. Patients, providers and health systems should take a peek at what we've put together. Walking The Patient-Centered Walk...(Or Being All Talk...) This is the response I got from my doctor today when I asked her (or her team) to find my blood type in my medical records. I tried to find the information myself but it’s not visible to me—the patient! I’ve been part of this same Integrated medical health system literally my entire life, having been borne there. I’ve had surgery and other procedures there so I know they have this information. So what’s this answer about? Laziness and not actually being patient-centered. This is a perfect example of why patients and consumers are finding alternatives to legacy healthcare—to find organizations that actually care about the individual. I’m still searching. …see more
Truth in Headlines Please! I saw this headline—and thought: ‘I didn’t know Uber is also a Health Care Organization!’ And then I read the article—Uber did not build a health care organization...they added ride services for patients. Two points: it’s great to have rides for people who need to get to and from their medical appointments. But...proving rides does not equal being a health care organization!. Doctors, nurses, hospital administrators, risk managers, technicians and other dedicated health care staff who work diligently to help patients in their medical care, recovery and illness, work in a health care organization. And running one of those organizations is hard work—patients and families rely on those people to be dedicated, accurate , evidenced-based, accountable and compassionate. When you are an organization like a hospital that understands and lives the daily stress and responsibly for lives lost-and saved—why then, and only then can you declare your self a health care organization! Until then, you are a ride hailing company that has an important population carve-out. —- LinkedIn Top Voice Healthcare 2015, 2016, 2017 …see more

Think Medicare-For-All is a Dirty Word? Health Insurance CEOs earned between 300 - 600 times more than the ‘regular’ employee. All major insurance companies paid their CEOs over 20Million dollars this year. Insurance companies collected a whopping $22Billion in profit—that’s profit—to be spent on executive bonuses. And let me remind you that those dollars started out as part of your salaries, which got withheld from your employer to cover these big profits. Got an issue with health insurance coverage being so darn expensive? Then I suggest you look at those private insurance companies raking in all your hard-earned money and start asking the hard question: ‘Why should they charge me such high rates if my money is not going towards health care for me and my family but instead being used to pay executives millions of dollars each year?’ And once you hear nothing from your insurance company then you might think differently about other ways we could be using our hard-earned dollars to benefit ourselves instead of benefiting some CEO. Selected Excerpt: “Combined, the CEOs of the eight largest publicly traded insurance companies, including pharmacy behemoth CVS, which acquired insurer Aetna, made $143.5 million in total compensation in 2018, up 14.4%.” …see more

A facial recognition system in Japan can identify people even when they’re wearing masks. It determines when a person is wearing a mask and hones in on the parts that are not covered up, such as the eyes and surrounding areas, to verify the subject’s identity. Users register a photo of their face in advance. The verification takes less than one second and supposedly has an accuracy rate of more than 99.9%. #facialrecognition #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #AI #artificialintelligence #deeplearning #machinelearning …see more
