I interviewed Sherrod Small, a comedian, actor, and all around personality. He told me that he wanted to start from bottom of the bottom. And wanted to grow his own voice. “What drove you to it then? When it comes to feedback that people typically DON'T want to hear, how do you deliver the message in a way the person interprets as helpful, and not harmful? I spoke recently with EF Education First 's Katelyn Alloy and she had some great advice to share. Alloy stresses that managers who take a one-size-fits-all approach to feedback deprive staff of critical support, trust, and professional development, putting them at greater risk of leaving. In contrast, approaching each employee with their own skill set in mind will help your people recognize their own value-add and be more receptive to future feedback. So, what does this look like in real life? You'll find some great examples in today's column. #EmotionalIntelligence #leadership #management #EducationFirst #teams #teamwork #collaboration #communication #feedback #eqapplied #MakeEmotionsWorkForYouNotAgainstYou …see more
Joey Chemis is many things. A self-described nerd, he's also quirky and a "normal" guy. He leads a successful career, having recently been promoted to the position of "data scientist II" at Microsoft. Chemis also happens to be on the autism spectrum. But while Chemis acknowledges being autistic presents certain challenges, he doesn't see it in a negative light. "Autism gives me superpowers where I can be hyperfocused on something and, for example, get three degrees in math, but I find certain interview processes nerve-racking," Chemis told the Wall Street Journal in a recent interview. Chemis is one of over 100 employees Microsoft has hired who are on the autism spectrum. It's all part of what Microsoft calls the "Autism Hiring Program." This is more than smart hiring. It's a brilliant lesson in emotional intelligence in the real world. I became a huge fan of IKEA when my wife introduced me to the company 10 years ago. Among other things, we both love their designs (most of the time), along with the fact that you don't have to wait for a piece of furniture once you find it. (And you can't beat their meatballs.) I was skeptical, though, upon hearing about IKEA's change in strategy, which involves building smaller stores in urban areas and a recent acquisition of freelance labor site Taskrabbit. But after reading colleague @ Bill Murphy Jr. 's recent story, it's all coming together. And I think IKEA's definitely on the right track. …see more
"If we get this wrong, the dangers are profound." Apple CEO Tim Cook gave a powerful speech last week at a privacy conference in Brussels. He spoke about the wonders of technology...but he also spoke out about the grave dangers with which mankind has been suddenly confronted. "Platforms and algorithms that promised to improve our lives can actually magnify our worst human tendencies," Cook stated. "Rogue actors and even governments have taken advantage of user trust to deepen divisions, incite violence and even undermine our shared sense of what is true and what is false." Cook then summed up the most frightening truth about technology today--in a single powerful sentence: "Our own information, from the everyday to the deeply personal, is being weaponized against us with military efficiency." "Stop being impressed by money, fame & status. Instead, be impressed by those who treat other human beings well, in both good times & bad." These words were recently shared by Warren Buffet. Not "Warren Buffett," mind you, i.e. the Berkshire Hathaway CEO who is widely recognized as one of the smartest investors of all time. No, this quote comes from the Twitter account of "Warren Buffet," spelled with one "t." The profile pic is of the famous CEO, but a spokesperson for Buffett recently confirmed that the account does not belong to him. The account, which apparently joined Twitter in 2016, currently only has 53 tweets. But over the past few days, those tweets have gone viral.
