Working with Brian Otieno , aka #Storitellah , on this National Geographic story about #COVID19 in #Kibera reminded me once again why I chose to spend almost a decade in #Kenya . The strength, resilience and resolve of talented young people like Brian, who was awarded a National Geographic Emergency Fund Grant for Journalists, kept me over there supporting creativity and commitment. I was honored to write the story that accompanies Brian's brilliant images, depicting how the people of Kibera, one of Africa's largest informal settlements, are coping during the COVID-19 pandemic. Young Africans aren't waiting for permission to take the lead in redefining how the world sees #Africa . Just watched the "A Living Wage Buys Health" panel from the #AspenIdeasHealth Festival last Saturday. Even though I served as moderator for the panel, it's hard to fully absorb all the great information being shared when you're in that role. I've learned a lot about the issue of "financial precarity" from this panel. Extreme stress and anxiety about paying the bills is no longer limited to the working poor. Poverty is being "democratized" as it gets harder for the middle class to make ends meet. I'm grateful to researchers @Crystal Hall from the University of Washington and Carrie Leana from the University of Pittsburgh , and to Tobias Read , Treasurer of the State of Oregon , for sharing valuable insights I'm also pleased to know that The Aspen Institute is focusing on the nexus between income and health through its #AspenFinancialSecurityProgram . #AspenIdeasFestival #Aspen #financialprecarity #livingwage #economicjustice https://lnkd.in/eGHbtvq …see more
Starting this new week with a fresh perspective on #globaldevelopment and #povertyreduction . All of the talk about #sustainabledevelopment and #SDGs is really rooted in one basic fact: #Poverty has many dimensions. It's not just about income or lack of food in bellies. The psychological impact of poverty is incalculable, in terms of its stunting effect on education, aspirations and motivation. That's why I'm sharing the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) from UNDP and the University of Oxford Poverty and Human Development Institute ( #OPHI ). It deepened my own understanding about the many facets of poverty, and made me appreciate my own mother's efforts to make all of her children believe that even though we were poor, education could help us achieve whatever we wanted, and that no amount of money can buy dignity and self-respect. We must all live and breathe these mantras in our communities when it comes to extending a hand to our fellow citizens. #socialpolicy #socialjustice #humandevelopment …see more

My favorite everyday ring, made of Tuareg silver. As a professional journalist, I was able to buy it for myself. #Financialindependence is critically important for women and girls, but early marriages prevent that dream for too many. #vowforgirls to help make their dreams come true and #endchildmarriage . Remember that from now until the Oct. 11 #DayoftheGirl , every time you post a picture of your #ringfingers on #socialmedia , Girls Not Brides: The Global Partnership to End Child Marriage and corporate partners Crate and Barrel , The Knot and Malia Mills NYC will donate $1 to the fight. #CorporateSocialResponsibility #genderequity #genderjustice #globaldevelopment #CSR …see more

What can I say...except that I called it 26 years ago. I knew back then that Jemele Hill had the spark, boldness, dynamism and writing talent to be a star...and she was only a 16 year old Detroit high school student at the time! Today, I have the privilege of saying I was one of her first journalism mentors, and that Jemele is now my friend. And she is also the 2018 National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) Journalist of the Year. She'll receive her award at this year's NABJ Convention in August--which just happens to be in Detroit. I plan to be in there to witness that moment. Fantastic piece by my Journalism and Women Symposium (JAWS) sister Zoe Sullivan , reporting from #RiodeJaneiro #Brazil about the assassination of City Council Woman Marielle Franco. Zoe skillfully captured the complex themes of the case, involving gender, race and poverty. Honestly, you just never know where a #JAWS journalist will turn up next... The momentum around eliminating neglected tropical diseases just got a huge boost, after Dr. Christian Schroeter , Senior Director for Pharma Business Integration at Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany gave the first ever TED Conferences Talk on NTDs! Dr. Schroeter starts by highlighting the incredible distinction earned by the global Uniting to Combat Neglected Tropical Diseases coalition last year when it earned the Guiness Book of World Records distinction for the most medication donated in a 24-hour period. Clearly, the recognition that eliminating these needless, disabling diseases of poverty would ignite positive global development is growing. Getting drugs to patients with #NTDs is one of the biggest obstacles faced bu the NTD coalition.
