Sharing others' stories is therapeutic and essential for me. It is written in my constitution. We are pieces of each other's stories. I was asked what it was like to be one of #LinkedInTopVoices 2015. I am here at this moment because someone invested in me, encouraged me and believed in my voice. Cheers to the other awardees.

I hope one day soon all companies have head of diversity to advocate for more women and minorities in leadership positions, more equality of pay between women and men's compensations, and more diversity in the hiring process.
The Provider Will Dial-You In Now... Have you tried a telehealth visit with your doctor or nurse? Or have you (stoically) decided to have an in-person doctor’s visit? Seems like some visits are in fact better—or not worse—done online...And one of visit-types that do just fine online is talk ltherapy. The evidence so far from these equivalency trials, comparing face-to-face versus over video — every trial shows no difference in clinical outcomes. And, from clinical point of view, the clinician can often learn more over video than in person, because you see people moving in their natural habitat, where they live, maybe how they interact with others. And patients like being at home. There’s a comfort level at home, sitting there in bed with one’s dog, that allows the patient to talk about things they maybe wouldn’t have in the office, because of how painful the experience or memories are. If you are a person who might benefit from talk therapy, give it a try! If you hate it, you can always just hang up... …see more
Why Followership is More Important than Leadership. With everything going on (you know what I mean...) there seems to be an uptick on advice on Leading or Leadership. Topics like ‘How to be a Good/Great Leader During Times Like These’ is everywhere. Helpful thoughts certainly but I’d suggest what is really needed right now is advice on ‘How to be a Great Follower,’ and ‘what Does Followership Look Like in Times Like These.’ First off, without Followers, Leaders fail. Leaders without Followers are either phonies, extremists or untrustworthy. The role of Followers is not talked about enough. Followers alone are responsible for the success of Leaders. Without followers there are no leaders. For any project or organization to succeed, there must be strong, ethical people who willingly and effectively follow. In these times—and in the context of Global Public Health Uncertainty—Followers uphold moral, cultural and community rule-of-laws. We are the Effector Arms and Legs of all the right and correct actions that must be taken. But it means honoring social distancing. But it also means considering our neighbors and community members by not hoarding or becoming rude, disrespectful or unethical. So go and do the right thing...And as my Dad would say, ‘Stay Out of Trouble.’ …see more
What Does Feminism and Equality Mean for Working Women and Men? Why, just ask Angela Merkel, German Chancellor for the last 13 years. Ms. Merkel strongly believes there is a need to show "why we are for democracy, why we try to bring about solutions, why we always have to put ourselves into the other person's shoes, why we stand-up against intolerance, why we show no tolerance towards violations of human rights." Selected Excerpt: On Feminism she says...” feminism meant "women having the same rights everywhere and this is parity... from politics to the media, to the business community, that must be our objective, we are not there yet." "We need more women in these relevant positions and that means men have to change their way of life." Young People: Go Forth and Continue to Improve Our World...please. …see more
Did you put off medical treatment because you didn’t have the cash on hand? Or worried the ER bill would be unreasonably large? Worry that a big accident or bad disease will crush you financially? If so you are not alone...sadly. Regardless of whether you are a Democrat and Republican or Independent, about 25% of us put off medical treatment according to a new survey from Gallup. And whose surprised given how expensive it is to be seen by a doctor in the ER, and how few things our health insurance actually covers and how high the co-pay is for health care... Equally disturbing is that almost all of us (appx 77%) feels rising health care costs will damage our economic growth. Think about what this means for our young people and our children who will be dealing with this economic burden, especially as so many of us age and use more and more healthcare services. If 25% of Americans said it was too expensive to have clean water in their homes, we’d be outraged. Yet that’s what’s happening here with our ability to access basic health care services. Selected Excerpt: “...One in four Americans have skipped treatment because of the cost, and that nearly half fear bankruptcy in the event of a health emergency.” Yikes... …see more
With DIY Home Medical Tests, Don’t Believe What You See... DIY projects might be fun when building a new gardening shed, but think twice—no, three times—before doing any home medical tests. The results you get are just as likely to be wrong as they are likely to be correct. Yikes! Talk about a new mode for medical errors. 40% wrong = random answer. Selected Excerpt: “ research published last week in the journal Genetics in Medicine, revealed a 40 percent false-positive rate, highlighting the importance of confirming DTC raw data before making any medical decisions.” …see more

An interesting way to use Eventbrite : vaccine appointment scheduling! In the absence of a statewide distribution system, several counties in Florida are turning to the event ticketing website Eventbrite to schedule vaccinations. It’s basically an online tool that serves the most urgent needs - however, it was indeed not created to be used this way, thus security questions rightly arise. #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #COVID19 #COVID_19 #coronavirus …see more
6 months have passed since the beginning of the pandemic, and with COVID-19 dominating our lives for the foreseeable future, it’s paramount that we take a look back and see what we screwed up at the start of it. To help its users stay fit during the lockdown, Fitbit extended its free Premium trial from 7 to 90 days. That's already enough time to experiment with its benefits, so I decided I would give it a try - there is nothing to lose here. Now, after a month, here are a few things that have been definitely useful and worked as an added benefit of being a Premium member of Fitbit. Besides the obvious guided exercise and meditation programs, challenges and adventures, the Wellness Report has been far the most exciting feature for me - it's amazing. In the Android app, you can find it under the Discover menu, then "Health and Wellness Stats" and "Wellness Reports". It gives a great overview of my resting heart rate, sleep patterns, how much time I have spent exercising and how many steps I have made on average. This is much better than the stats in the app and the descriptions are more helpful too. I will share these data with my GP to check how my resting heart rate changes in relation to my workouts. "You wouldn’t need to talk. We could still do it for sentimental reasons." Guess who said this about our future 1 year from now. You guessed it right, it was Elon Musk, in Joe Rogan's podcast a few days ago. He was explaining how his company, Neuralink is working on a technology that allows brain-computer interfaces take language's place within a year, which would eventually make languages disappear. This is exactly what we were exploring in our ebook '40 Questions About the Future of Healthcare': will we be able to transmit or read thoughts sometime, thus eliminating languages? https://lnkd.in/eKC7BmH Download it for getting an answer not only to this, but 39 further exciting questions about digital health as well: Or, what's even better, you can get all our ebooks for free month by month, if you become one of our Advanced Medical Futurist patrons! "Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds." That's what came to the mind of J. Robert Oppenheimer, “father of the atomic bomb” about the first nuclear test in history. We believe that the genome editing method called CRISPR-Cas9 brings the same level of threats and opportunities to mankind as the invention of nuclear fission, which brought both nuclear power and atomic bombs. Aaron Moran from Guatemala sent me these photos of the telemedicine booths they have deployed. They are facing some difficulties with their software and are looking for solutions that have been already in use. Do you know of any? I thought the whole telemedicine booth idea is not viable due to the fact that most of the technologies and sensors included in the booth can also be included in my phone. And it's easier to empower people to use their phone than deploying booths. If you know about good examples for such a booth concept, please do share! #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #fromchancetochoice #telemedicine …see more
