Thank you Tatler Singapore and CNA Luxury for inviting me to join a dinner panel on sustainability and business. As an investor in next generation of how we live, work, and stay healthy, I see sustainability as default. Our portfolio companies make sustainability a priority and are leading the chart in redefining sustainable consumption. For example, ADAY makes the best apparel from sustainable, technical fabrics and solar-powered factories. Function of Beauty and Winky Lux make custom hair care and makeup products from organic, vegan, cruelty-free ingredients. Kids on 45th sell upcycled second hand kids’ clothes in a surprise box. Another important aspect of sustainability is people sustainability. Modern companies need to design thoughtful workplaces that enable people to thrive in the long run. Our portfolio company Werk.co is dedicated to creating future of work with flexibility and data analytics. The bottom line is: invest your capital and efforts into things that build a better world. This is why I’m so proud of the work we do at SoGal Ventures . #sustainability #femalefounders #startups …see more

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that in May 2020, youth unemployment dramatically spiked to more than 25 percent due to COVID. Young people should consider gaining 'hands on' field-based experience (vs other forms of learning) at this time and businesses should consider taking on apprentices #kentucky #apprenticeship …see more

Morehouse College Honorary Degree Recipient Robert F. Smith did an extraordinary thing: he announced that he and his family would pay the debt of every graduate. He said he was part of the Class of 2019 and they all needed to start the next phase on a level field. Wow! How remarkable, especially given that there was apparently no knowledge ahead of time that Mr. (now Doctor) would make that promise. What a gift. What an act of grace. What a way of paying it forward. And Mr. Smith wasn’t a Morehouse alum! Forget how high the bar is for honorary degree recipients moving forward. Forget the feelings of relief so many there experienced. Don’t forget that Morehouse is an HBCU that has struggled financially. Don’t forget the powerful message of belief in graduates and their promising future as leaders. If I had a magic wand or billions of dollars (I don’t), I would repay the debt of every 2019 graduate of a college that is closing this year. Talk about a remarkable end. I understand the “last” Southern Vermont College graduation this weekend was moving and forward looking. I’m glad the event was so memorable. Now, here’s my other hope: that this will not be SVC’s last Commencement because other donors will see the value of small colleges. That would be a remarkable gift. …see more

A special thank you to LinkedIn for recognizing “my voice” — along with the many other important voices across many disciplines. While we are living in serious times and I usually write about serious issues, I appreciate LinkedIn showing me reading to children wearing my special giraffe ears and horns! That image signals what I do — so double thanks.

I am embarrassed at present by the boorishness of those in power in US government. Seriously, it seems as if crassness is catching like the flu. Now General Kelly?  I am in Canada and getting an earful from people around the globe although most people feel sorry for us.  Imagine talking about people the way the General did. Please, can we show a little grace? He of all people knows about pain and loss.   And, if you have a moment, look on an unrelated matter to this vimeo where I am answering questions that begged for self-reflection.  Might it be time for our leaders to self-reflect? Is that too much to ask?  Why can't all of us answer these questions once a month.  Decently. https://lnkd.in/dcy3uKK …see more

Wealth inequality, and in particular, the racial wealth gap grows with staggering numbers. A report released by Founders of Color says that it will take a Black family 228 years to equal the wealth of #whites . For #Latinos , it is 211 years. I'll speak with Kelly Burton, PhD soon, but Arkrepublic wrote a quick, quick article on the report FOC put out. I hope to get deeper into the conversation with Dr. Burton. #wealthgap #entrepreneur #blackbusiness #brown #asian #womenownedbusiness THE STORY: https://lnkd.in/dkrZmKw …see more

What Happens When Health Insurance is Linked to Employment: Because of job losses due to the pandemic, over the last 4 months, 5.4 million laid-off workers became uninsured, which means that 40% more Americans are ‘going bare.—‘ meaning without insurance. This is what happens when healthcare insurance is tied to employment instead of just being a ‘product’ individuals/families can buy, like any other insurance product—think home insurance or car insurance...People don’t get those products through employers, so why force health insurance to be bought through employers? Nevertheless, no federal COVID-19 legislation signed into law has attempted to restore or preserve comprehensive health insurance. Selected Excerpt: ‘Now is the time to fill that gap by including protections for comprehensive health insurance in the next COVID-19 bill.’ …see more

Why America Needs The World Health Organization This might fall under the category of ‘boring but important,—‘ not every thing can be fun-and-games... The World Health Organization (WHO), founded in 1948, has a broad mandate to “act as the directing and coordinating authority on international health work” within the United Nations system. It is made of 1948. Sound like something we need right about now? When we have a Global Pandemic? YES is the answer. Yes. But the US Government is cutting funding and America is the largest funder. This is like if you fired your doctor because he gave you bad news. Sure, it happens but not to people who are critical thinkers and want to succeed. But this administration—and its talking heads— are pointing fingers, trying to blame them for—well, does it matter? Claims of slow response, failure to mobilize resources, failure to perceive the deadly impact of this global disease sounds like a complaint against this administration, not WHO. We need all the smart scientists, doctors and data now more than ever. In fact everyone is counting on them to develop vaccines and medications. We certainly are not looking to Talking Heads to develop these drugs and tests. Keep funding WHO. Otherwise we are lighting a match to burn down our own homes. …see more

Who needs housing, or education, or food or healthcare when you can have missiles, bombs and brass? Trump released a $4.8 trillion budget proposal on Monday that includes deep cuts to student loan assistance, affordable housing efforts, food stamps and Medicaid. The White House has also joined a lawsuit brought by a group of Republican states that would seek to invalidate all of the Affordable Care Act. Meaning all you folks who have any sort of pre-existing medical conditions could be out of luck if you want insurance—of expect to pay a whole lot more than you do already. Just yesterday I spoke with Mom of 2 kids while at a cafe while in Maryland who told me they feel lucky paying $700.00/month for health insurance because that’s less than they used to pay pre-ACA. This budget paints a real vision for America; one I hope never happens. …see more

Buyer Beware: Importance of Comprehensive Health Insurance When it comes to health coverage, more is better—especially when something like neurological monitoring in the OR can cost you $94,000 for 4 hours...as is the case for this 26 year old woman who thought she had good insurance... New Government laws are allowing the sale of ‘skinny’ health plans that can turn away people with pre-existing medical conditions or don’t cover all expenses. With insurance, it is understanding which doctors and services are part of your plan—or what’s called ‘contracted providers or covered services.’ If a doctor or service is not ‘in network’ (as is the case in this story about neurological monitoring in the OR—which might or might not actually provide any value—), you can bet your bottom dollar all your dollars are going to go towards paying a hefty bill! Selected Excerpt: "Unfortunately, non-contracted providers can expose our members to significantly greater out-of-pocket costs. These charges often have no connection to underlying market prices, costs or quality...” Meaning, you are on your own for paying what we charge you whether the service had any value and regardless of whether it was any good...Finally we have some honesty... …see more

Pre-Existing Conditions be Damned. Let’s raise a glass to ‘Good Health!’ Because if the ACA is struck down then you will be bad off if you have any—and I mean any—medical problems. Under this President and his AG, they are asking for a complete reversal of ALL provisions which currently protect Americans and which help doctors and hospitals stay in business (by helping with insurance for those that can’t afford their own.) And if you don’t care about having reasonably priced insurance and coverage for your medical problems then maybe this affects you: The law also includes dozens of provisions that are less well known and not related to the individual mandate. It requires nutrition labeling and calorie counts on menu items at chain restaurants. It requires certain employers to provide “reasonable break time” and a private space for nursing mothers to pump breast milk. It improved prescription drug coverage for Medicare beneficiaries. Selected Excerpt: “Not just some of the insurance provisions, but all of it, including the Medicaid expansion and hundreds of other reforms. That’s a total bombshell, which could have dire consequences for millions of people.” …see more

https://lnkd.in/gHjJ_Hm Who Needs Science to Tell Us That ‘Broken Heart’ is Bad for Our Health? Some times science simply is ‘late to the game,’ as the saying goes. Brace yourself because scientists have now officially declared that having a broken heart is no good for one’s health....(I know the article says more than this but trust me, this is the main thrust...) Years ago I was talking with a psychotherapist about love, and he said something so extraordinary that I never forgot it: He said when you first ‘fall in love,’ you become slightly psychotic. Which made sense to me in thinking about how some people seem to go ‘over the edge’ with their extreme obsession about their new love interest. And if this true, then falling out of love must be equally rough on the psyche. Did we need a study to tell us what just about each of us have either experienced or seen first-hand? Selected Excerpt: “The study underlines the fact that our brains and hearts are connected even more intimately than scientists have believed...and that a broken heart can cause stress and anxiety.” …see more
