I'm truly mystified by the way some people have responded to 16-year-old Greta Thunberg's impassioned #climatechange activism. Though I realize most of of the criticism is fueled by conservative talking points culled from Fox News, the level of patronizing dismissiveness--or pious concern about "that poor, mentally unstable child being exploited by adults"--leaves me wondering how limited their view of children's humanity must be. If you want to read the rest of this rant, you'll have to find my new Facebook Page, "Rachel Jones-Globally Speaking." I've decided I needed someplace else to share my unique perspective about #globaldevelopment , #globalhealth and #socialjustice , and my page will take the conversations I've started on LinkedIn to the next level. I hope you'll check out #RachelJonesGloballySpeaking on Facebook, and give it a "Like" while you're there! …see more
Just stepped away from the suitcases and boxes long enough to take a WhatsApp call from nakisanze segawa , a Global Press Journal reporter based in Kampala, Uganda. I'm editing a second story Naki produced, about illegal fishing in Lake Victoria, after the first story of hers that I edited was posted yesterday. http://bit.ly/2kIYXsS Getting a little practice in before I start my job as Story Editor for GPJ on Sept. 30th! What a ride it's going to be, supporting women like Naki who are building their journalistic expertise and literally changing the face of #internationalreporting . #journalism #womenjournalists #GPJ #GlobalPressJournal #GlobalPressInstitute #globaldevelopment …see more

I just downloaded the #AspenIdeasHealth app, and guess who I found? Myself! What a thrill to be located between two luminaries: #PhenomenalWoman and #MidwifeExtraordinaire Jennie Joseph and the legendary soul musician Booker T. Jones. I'm going to try to keep my professional duties front and center while I’m at the Aspen Ideas Health Festival, but y’all just don’t understand. I grew up with the music of Booker T. Jones. And if he brings even ONE MG with him, I will totally lose my mind. The Aspen Institute #IdeasHealth #midwivessavelives #globalhealth #healthaccess #healthequity #SocialDeterminantsofHealth …see more

This year marks two major anniversaries for women’s equality in the #UnitedKingdom . In 1868, nine women were admitted to the University of London to enroll for a ‘special examination’ course, giving women in #Britain access to university education for the first time. In 1918, the Representation of the People Act was passed in the #UK , for the first time giving the right to vote to women over the age of 30 and "of property". Now, 150 years since women were first admitted to higher education in Britain, and on the centenary of UK women's suffrage, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U. of London is proud to be hosting the second annual Women Leaders in Global Health Conference. This terrific piece by Rebecca Root of Devex perfectly outlines the nexus between health and global development. Social and economic progress can only be attained when the majority of people are able to positively contribute to a country's functioning. It seems like such a no-brainer, and yet nations continue to debate the need for #universalhealthcare, and policies continue to be developed that are shortsighted and punitive when it comes to providing access to quality care. This has to stop. Healthy men, women and children must be viewed as lucrative business commodities. #HealthForAll #globalhealth #globaldevelopment #SDGs …see more

I started my Wednesday morning by reading Laurie Garrett 's latest piece for Foreign Policy magazine, 'The Crime of Gender Inequality in Global Health." c-banks & fin.regulators are going to have a richer interpretation of “operational resilience” post covid. expect a whole lot of activity around that from incumbents, startups... orthogonal to digitization & automation. differentiated enough to be a separate fintech trend.
