Awesome news from Planned Parenthood Federation of America via kate zernike of The New York Times : Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency room doctor whose family fled #China when she was a child, has been chosen as the organization's next president. Wen won praise for her steadying hand as #Baltimore 's health commissioner during the city’s protests in 2015. Dr. Wen, 35, grew up poor in Compton, Calif., after her family left China following the Tiananmen Square massacre just before her eighth birthday. She relied on #Medicaid as a child, and in nearly four years in Baltimore has drawn acclaim for working with corporations and churches to close racial disparities in health care and sharply reducing infant mortality. This caps an incredibly enlightening day for me, following DC Mayor Muriel Bowser 's Maternal and Infant Health Summit. Momentum seems to be building for around health care access and equity issues. #WorldContraceptionDay #maternalhealth #infanthealth #MomhealthDC #maternalmortality #Infantmortality #immigrants #Immigration #healthequity #healthcareaccess …see more

So honored to be hearing from the legendary Betsy Wade during the Fran Lewine Memorial Interview with Linda Deutsch and Edith M. Lederer, two venerable, veteran journalists with The Associated Press In five decades with the AP, Linda established herself as the nation's leading expert in coverage of high-profile trials. From Charles Manson to O. J. Simpson, Michael Jackson and Phil Spector, she was known for her fair and unbiased coverage, and after her retirement in 2015, she became a much sought-after TV analyst. Edie has reported on every continent except Antartica for the AP, and is currently the United Nations chief correspondent. She has covered wars and disasters and global issues raging from the nuclear progams of Iran and North Korea to climate change, global poverty and the quest for women's equality. It is a tremendous privilege for me to say I belong to the JAWS sisterhood with women like Betsy, Linda and Edie. #jaws17 #JAWS #women #journalism #mentoring …see more
