It was really hard to track down the developers of Leela Chess Zero, the highest rated chess engine today, but I managed to find them in a developer forum. It was interesting to learn that the developers are not professional chess players and they don't even need to be to develop such an algorithm. Imagine the same in medicine. Developers creating the highest rated medical algorithm without having a profound knowledge of medicine. This is the era artificial intelligence is bringing to us. Here is how they described the algorithm works: "Leela Chess uses a neural network trained without human knowledge. The training procedure uses reinforcement learning to train the next generation of the network based on games played using the previous one against itself (“self-play”) so without any external influence. The initial network is trained using random games so there is no human input in the process. The next network improvement comes from using a (small) search tree to improve the neural network’s evaluation of a position and using this outcome, together with the game result, to train the next network. Any principles used during play are discovered this way, but not in a way that can be easily extracted as such. Obviously, the rules of chess are hard-coded in the engine." …see more

A short update for the few of you who are interested in my chess journey. I'm over my first amateur competition (which was a real slap in the face), just finished this amazing book and I keep on working 2 hours every day. I'm around 1500 according to the online chess rating systems and I just became a member of the MTK chess family therefore I plan to make my professional debut in November to get #FIDE rating. The one thing I've definitely learnt about AI since last November by playing chess is to admire what a deep learning algorithm can do. When #AlphaZero Leela (rated around 3400) plays, it is literally like magic for me and I watch games from Carlssen, Ding and Nakamura every day. I'll present this whole journey's experience in my new keynote AI narrative that comes out this October. #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #fromchancetochoice #speaker #keynote #speakerlife …see more

The best science fiction stories make you sit for hours and just think about life and the future. I read a lot but I don't always get that special feeling. But now I had it twice after reading Alastair Reynolds' two stories: Zima Blue and Understanding Space and Time. Zima Blue (also in Death, Love, Robots on Netflix) is the perfect sci-fi. A subtle story about robots and humans with a twist. Understanding Space and Time is a wicked dream about a civilization that makes you re-think what being a human means and how we could evolve in the far far future. What science fiction stories made you re-think your view of life and the future? #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #book #reading #read #scifi #sciencefiction …see more

When I started working with a FIDE chess trainer last November, my sister started learning to play the Chinese chess game called Go. Recently, she introduced me to the game and it couldn't be more different from chess. Chess is about rules and computation, calculating variations and designing strategies. Go is about territories, intuition, yin-yang and philosophy. Both games help me so much in understanding the limitations of machine and deep learning algorithms when it comes to medical and healthcare uses. If you play either game, what is your experience with it? #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #AI #artificialintelligence #chess #deeplearning #machinelearning #TMFchessjourney …see more

What would you name as the biggest obstacle for AI adoption in most businesses? Everyone seems to be building artificial intelligence-based software, also in healthcare, but no one talks about one of the most important aspects of the work: data annotation and the people behind it. That’s the point when we need a deep dive into context: How do you create a smart algorithm? Where and how do you get the data for it? What do you need for a pattern recognizing program to work well and what are the challenges? Why context matters? It is about asking a lot of questions to show why a particular piece of information, event, technology is important, how these things can provide a way to understand the world. With The Medical Futurist team we help healthcare stakeholders contextualize where they stand in the stream of new trends. So back to the main question, one of the biggest obstacles for AI adoption is the lack of labeled data. We will never have smart algorithms in healthcare without data annotators. https://lnkd.in/gJCUpZs #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #AI #artificialintelligence #chess #deeplearning #machinelearning #TMFchessjourney …see more

In our trends report for 2019 we talk about technologies that had come a long way. From A.I. to AR, we examined these powerful forces as they evolved from promising innovations into well-grounded trends. We have also looked into new opportunities on the horizon such as cross-border cooperation or genomics on the blockchain. It's important to recognize their individual potential and to find strategic opportunities, but one of the most pressing challenges that healthcare professionals and health teach leaders are facing is how to harness the value these trends can deliver collectively. The best thing about being a professional keynote speaker is that you hear opinions and get feedback from a wide range of people coming from many cultures and experiences. I try to synthesize all those into my narratives because otherwise I'd just build another ivory tower of medicine  What would be your advice to a speaker who has a strong message about what the future of healthcare should be like but you want to make sure that your view is also included in that vision? #keynote   #speaker   #digitalhealth   #future   #healthcare …see more

Something to ponder on a Friday that commemorates the 57th anniversary of the march on Washington lead by Dr. King. If we fully understood this truth and made changes accordingly, imagine how very strong we would be. "Us and them" has been done and it hasn't gone well. I have hope we will "get" it before it's too late. #leadership #equity #strength …see more
