When I wrote yesterday that people like United States Rep. John Lewis had paved my path to an editor's desk in #WashingtonDC , I had no idea just how literal that statement was. But when my brother Peter Jones visited the about-to-close Newseum recently, he found an image that has moved me to my core. It is a picture of then college student John Lewis, who was a member of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, Inc participating in a #CivilRights Movement protest in my hometown of Cairo, Illinois. This week, Wellcome Trust Director Jeremy Farrar announced a new £250m not-for-profit fund: the Wellcome Leap Fund. The Leap Fund will accelerate #discovery and #innovation, with the aim of delivering breakthroughs over a five- to ten-year horizon. Said Farrar, "It will draw inspiration from the technology and venture capital sectors – taking on early stage, high-risk ideas and funding at scale – and apply these principles to charitable programme #investments in the #health and life #sciences. It will run for an initial five years from 2020 and will account for around 5% of our total charitable spend during this time." Farrar's full statement below explains more about the Leap Fund. Edna Adan Ismail is a nurse, midwife, a retired United Nations diplomat, French Legion of Honour recipient, Former First Lady and former foreign minister of #Somaliland -- an unrecognized, self-declared state that has been going it alone since 1991. Adan Ismail was also a founding member of the Somali Red Crescent back in 1963. The tireless 80-year-old has poured everything she has, including her pension, into providing much-needed health care to a population with one of the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the world -- a situation that's been exasperated by Somalia's long civil war, which led to the death or departure of nearly all of the country's health care workers.
