If senators don’t understand Facebook, how will they regulate digital health issues? – I asked last year. http://bit.ly/2XRTQ77 After yesterday’s Facebook Libra hearing before the Senate Banking Committee, I wonder whether Congress is savvy enough to understand Libra to the extent that it can coherently regulate it. During Tuesday’s two-hours-long session, most of the lawmakers seemed far less concerned with the technology than with Facebook and the series of scandals (which should also be a key issue on the table) around the company in recent years. Policy-makers must inevitably have a profound knowledge of new technologies so they can make the best decisions when it comes to regulating Libra or when considering complex ethical issues regarding the 3D printing of synthetic tissues, autonomous surgical robots or the use of artificial intelligence in diagnostics. As a keynote speaker I get to examine the healthcare landscape from various perspectives. When speaking in front of a C-level audience I have to address the big picture, help them question their current assumptions and enhance their approaches to change from exploring new possibilities to implementing structured change. Talking to medical professionals I have to translate digital health trends into practical knowledge/advice from evaluating and implementing health sensors and trackers in their practice, to addressing privacy questions or unlocking the value of genetic testing in precision medicine/ in daily care. This “zooming” between perspectives, embracing multiple layers of a trend is what thrills me the most about these meetings. I learn something new with each encounter. I've been thinking a lot lately about things I can do to be more present and connected to community and small ways to make a real difference. I started a list and thought I would share and ask for additional ideas. Please share yours! Take a co-worker you don't know well to lunch and get to know them better. Bring a plate of cookies or bowl of fruit to a neighbor. Start an office or neighborhood coat drive and donate winter coats to a local homeless shelter. Volunteer to listen to kids read at a local school. Let someone go ahead of you in line, just because. Put treats out for neighbors who walk their dogs. Explore a part of town you typically don't visit to shop, go to a play or musical event. Share your talent by volunteering some time to teaching even one person how to play an instrument, paint, draw, sing or act. Do handyman/woman jobs for a neighbor. Mow or take a lawn or shovel a walk for someone who needs help doing it. Organize a trash pickup day at a local park, beach, creek side... Give someone a compliment each day. Start a cooking club and take turns hosting dinner for friends. Invite a guest. Look at the checkout clerk when they say "hello" and ask you how your day is going. Ask them how their day is going too. Listen to their answer and be present. …see more
