WFAE's General Manager Joe O'Connor welcomes the audience to the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center's Spirit Square, for the "Charlotte Talks" statewide broadcast, "Unrest in the Queen City." The discussion marks the one-year anniversary of the shooting of Keith Lamont Scott in the City of Charlotte , and the period of protests and demonstrations that folllowed. Watching a video montage of news clips and photos right now. Intense. At the time, so many people said, "This is NOT Charlotte." But it was. It is. And what it revealed was that not everyone experiences the same Charlotte. #Charlotte #protests #policeshootings #socialjustice โฆsee more

I keep #SouthSudan nestled in a corner of my heart. My first trip there was in December 2010 for a Voice of America reporters' workshop just ahead of the 2011 Independence vote. I traveled there 5 more times to work with VOA journalists, and will never forget their sincerity, courage and persistence. The ongoing strife and deterioration in the world's youngest nation is heartbreaking, but I continue to be impressed by the strength and resilience of women there. I actually believe that eventually, they'll lead the way back to peace. BBC : An estimated 86% of the more than 900,000 South Sudanese refugees in Uganda are women and children, says the United Nations . Many women are leading their extended households and communities in crowded refugee settlements. With the support of each other, the authorities and international non-governmental organisations (NGOs), they are trying to build a life. #women #peacebuilding #SouthSudan #Uganda #Africa โฆsee more

a fintech IPO that says more about geopolitics, trade & currency wars than anything else. also whether floated in the US or HK, do not trust Antโs numbers. obviously.
my money is on this shift to not be a โone time thing and back to normalโ. unlike a major recession or depression which can be viewed as a once in a lifetime event for a generation, an interconnected world swept by pandemics forces us to adapt and change in longer lasting ways. it is only normal that the way we socialize and the way we organize for work, and the way we organize as citizens will change too. startups and incumbents will have to crack the new code. Citi making the case for a federated bank id similar to what has already happened in the Nordics. this is exactly what banks in every geography/jurisdiction should do. a federated bank id offering would unlock so much value in financial services at large. #financialservices #banks #banking #identity #id โฆsee more

โชthe only entity for whom Libra accrues value is... Facebook.โฌ โชwithstanding this unavoidable fact, w/a similar model & a different approach to data privacy, a closed loop system w/a stable digital token, identity, payments & a sprinkling of crypto will be the next mega hit. โฌ
THAT is fascinating. primary reason is the industry is consolidating. might it be that emerging payment solutions are bypassing traditional channels & smaller players in specific corridors? #banks #banking #payments โฆsee more

hypothesis: large financial services firms tend to have distributed business teams and centralized tech teams. the latter needs to be more distributed to gain biz knowledge & flexibility. partnering with b2b fintech startups is one of the ways one achieves this goal. #fintech #startups #financialservices #banking #banks #insurance #payments #innovation โฆsee more

this is such a depressing read. there are tech solutions for sure, to improve onboarding, to improve transaction analysis. without political will & coordination, little improvement to he expected.
