For #ThrowbackThursday , the slideshow I created featuring the 60 young #midwives who graduated from the Edna Adan Ismail University Hospital's #Midwifery Program on June 30, 2018. By turns, the new midwives were solemn and excited during the ceremony in #Hargeisa , the capital of #Somaliland . Many were the first in their families to receive formal education. Some come from villages and regions where they would soon be the only person with medical training available to serve thousands of people. But they will succeed, because they've all been infused with the determination and vision of Madame Edna, for whom the word "impossible" is just fuel to keep achieving. She has surpassed her personal goal of training 1,000 midwives in Somaliland, so I imagine she has re-set the bar. You can read more about Edna Adan Ismail in my National Geographic Magazine January 2019 #GlobalHealth feature story about #maternalmortality . #health #education #reproductivehealth #medicaltraining #midwivessavelives #midwivesmatter Women Deliver The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health (PMNCH) …see more
More great news from the GlobalCitizen Festival: Leading philanthropists as well as African and European governments have announced more than US$150 million to tackle #neglectedtropicaldiseases largely unknown in western countries, but which affect 1.5 billion people – or one in five on the planet. The over $150 million funding will unlock a total aid package worth many, many more times that sum thanks to the free donation of medicines from pharmaceutical companies. The announcements to fund the prevention and treatment of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) were made at a star-studded festival in Johannesburg, South Africa, co-hosted by the Government of South Africa, the HOUSE OF MANDELA , the motsepe Foundation Foundation, and the activist network Global Citizen. hypothetical: the future Messi will be paid in some sort of digital currency (full crypto or not). his agent, manager and financial advisor will have to be fluent in digital currency. his fans will too.

which bank CEO, being gifted with the super power of accurate foresight, would have gone all in on partnerships with big tech firms pre covid-19? which bank CEO, post covid-19, is not planning on partnering with Facebook’s Libra (especially w/latest pivot)?

the absence of blockchain or cryptocurrency or tokens or ICOs or DAO may be depressing news for some.
Libra is dead long live Libra. dead in its original vision and launched as is. newly elected board comprised of CEO, A16, Xapo (crypto custody, A16 ecosystem), Kiva (non profit microcredit) and PayU (payment gateway roll up owned by Naspers). the recent claim is 1,500 organizations were interested in joining and 180 meet Libra’s criteria. board composition is interesting: payment gateway corp with global footprint & ties to payment networks, custody skills, non profit for virginity, leading VC for thought leadership & strategic innovation power. several thoughts come to mind: - expect Libra to be backed by only the $ as a simplification measure that will please regs & govts. (SDR backing would have been neat but i suspect it would have been too difficult from start) - Libra needs on/off ramp access to financial system to thrive, so expect those partners that left to work on a partnership behind the scenes. - would not be surprised to see large banks among the 180 eligible partners, but they will wait & are where the winds blow - Libra to clarify privacy & data usage/management. - Libra to become more of a payment system & less “crypto voodoo” to appeal to regs & govts. #currencies #tokens #Libra #payments #USD #fintech #Facebook …see more
