I can’t help but look at the photographs of Tiger Woods after the US won the President’s Cup. Yes he brought the team back. Yes, he won his three matches. Yes, he was one of two winning player coaches. But for me, the photo shows a man who has come through hell and in the process, he found his smile. I may be wrong but in his youth, I don’t remember seeing such authentic smiles and such warmth with other players. I recall an automaton. I think there is a lesson here for us all. We can find our way back. We can recover our smile. We can become a better version of ourselves. We can be role models after all. It is comforting and memorable even to see joy return to Tiger. Or maybe with age, there is a different kind of joy. A mulligan .... that’s a gift and human term for a do-over. It’s not cheating. It is the product of life’s many lessons. …see more
I just read a piece in Medium written by an adult whose childhood dentist hit her in the face. Sadly, lots of children are traumatized by the adults with whom they engage — not just parents. Doctors, dentists, religious figures, coaches and even neighbors or contractors are implicated. What happens is that children are silenced by the trauma and can’t speak up and out. The freeze response to trauma freezes our voice. We then have children who hold their trauma within. That is why I wrote a forthcoming book published by Columbia Teachers College Press (June 2020) titled Educating for Trauma: Strategies for Student Success. Kids bring their trauma to school in suitcases of different sizes. We need to help them now. Waiting does not make trauma disappear. No indeed. It just gets sublimated and cabined away. Its symptomology remains. The book will, I hope, help. …see more
The recent Times Square incident makes us realize that all the shootings have put our collective autonomic nervous systems on alert. This isn’t healthy. And the panics show how easily we are rattled. Trauma abounds. This is why I am completing my book, Generation Trauma Goes to School, ASAP. We need to address trauma symptomology surrounding us. Trauma informed is not enough. Trauma sensitive and trauma responsive are needed in schools, workplaces and communities. This isn’t a political issues folks. Shootings and fear and trauma don’t carry an R or D on them. …see more
So folks, I really need comments on this from all my connections and followers. Can mini-pop up bookstores work — spread everywhere —- to get more books into the hands of kids? The units (stand and books) could be purchased and then donated to locations where kids in need are located. Vendors could get units and sell the books to break even or make a small profit. Doctors offices? Bodegas? Please share thoughts. And if you want one to acquire one for wherever you work, let me know. It may not solve the educational equity divide but it could be a start with legs. …see more

So, with the Cosby verdict, truth has finally emerged. I have been wondering if part of the problem is that many people saw Cosby as Dr. Huxtable, an example of conflating truth and fiction. Ironically, both fellows dispensed meds -- only one was a doctor and not a real one at that. We often confuse truth and fiction. I think this is something as to which we can all fall prey --- not rape, goodness knows. I mean we can mistake truth and fiction. We want to believe fictions -- they are often easier than truths. We even enhance fiction sadly. Just look at the Michigan State debacle. Truth was buried. We don't want heroes or doctors or presidents for that matter to fall -- so we psychologically distort truth. Human flaw. And now, the victims can see that truth does eventually show its face. Brava for their strength over all these years. Fiction just got its comeuppance. #psychology #fiction #victims #truth …see more
I just saw a quote by Annette Breaux that beautifully states what all teachers, professors and student life staff know or can benefit from knowing: "Remember, everyone in the classroom has a story that leads to misbehavior or defiance. 9 times out of 10, the story behind the behavior won't make you angry. It will break your heart." I'd change the word "classroom" to the word "campus" or "school" --- and that expands the quote meaningfully and importantly. I was recently on a panel where I suggested that we offer support to new minority faculty. Another panelist said: why is that needed? They can do it on their own. I said: not everyone can or should be forced to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps. What is wrong with helping others, even without their asking? Let's be clear and candid: We all need help in one way or another. And, many of the rules of the game of the academy are not so clear and are not spelled out as another panelist pointed out so aptly. And, if we can enable success, does it really matter as educators how we do it? As long as success is there (real success), is there some reason we think those who don't ask for or get help are better? Moral superiority for being able to work alone? Please. …see more

Years ago I worked in an office in the summer for LA Parks & Rec before the swimming pools opened where I was a managing lifeguard. One day, I came into the office with cornrows. The secretary told me that she was embarrassed by my hairstyle and that, that wasn't ladylike. So, she sent me home. When I went home, I told my mother. Mom told me to go right back to that job with my natural hair and tell her to call her if she has a problem with her daughter's hair. That woman never spoke to me again. Hah! Unfortunately, this woman was vocal, many people silently discriminate in the work place against hair outside of the mainstream and especially if its a coily mane like mine. Employment, hair & politics. For a person with coils who once had locks and now rocks cornrows and headwraps, hair in the office space can get really ugly.
