When I first started writing my book, Indistractable, I had trouble staying on task, and at first, I blamed technology for distracting me. But then I noticed that even when I got rid of the tech gadgets I thought were to blame, I would find other things to grab my attention. It wasn’t until I dove much deeper and began to ask myself why I was shifting my attention that I realized the root cause. I learned that all too often, the cause of distraction isn’t what’s happening outside of us but rather what is happening inside of us. Distraction and procrastination aren’t evidence of a character flaw or moral failing. They also aren’t caused by some evil plot by tech companies. Rather, they are caused by our inability to deal with uncomfortable sensations like boredom, stress, and anxiety. What do you think? How do you deal with uncomfortable feelings?
