Do you often make decisions you later regret? Then try tool no. 6 from the #EQToolbox : Fast-forward. Fast-forwarding to the end may ruin a film, but it’s a helpful skill when dealing with emotions. If you find yourself in an emotionally charged moment, step back and think forward to the consequences of your actions—both short- and long-term. For example, imagine you come to work and you're faced with a difficult decision. That same morning, you happened to have a big fight--with your partner, your manager, or another colleague. Now’s the time to fast-forward. Forget about how you feel in the moment. Ask yourself: How will this decision affect you in a month? A year? Five years? Think about the effects your actions will have on you, your work, even your family. If emotion is clouding your judgment, taking a moment to fast-forward can help you achieve clarity of mind and make sound decisions that you’re proud of. Sarah recently left The Verge to join The New York Times and was almost immediately subjected to an astonishing vitriolic attack by right wing trolls. I found it genuinely horrifying to read the death threats (and far worse) directed at a colleague I knew to be anything but the racist she was inaccurately being portrayed as. Sarah, of course, dealt with it grace and humor telling me that at least the trolls were using a decent photo of her.
