CVS Health took a step back five years ago and realized that for their brand to be viewed as a health enabler, they needed to stop selling tobacco. They took a hit in sales up front, but the positive impact to the brand has long-term benefits. And it was a good example of a company not just shoehorning a purpose into their brand. But remember, all brands have a purpose, not all have to have a cause. I see so much bashing of marketing and I just want to share that marketing, at it’s best, is about connecting people to products or services that improve their lives. And it doesn’t have to cure cancer be life improving either. Are there bad actors within the marketing world? Sure. But there are in every field. So let’s knock it off with the “marketing is evil” BS, shall we? Even “growth teams” use marketing tactics. This week on Sworn Testimonies, I had the opportunity to chat with Chika Okoro. Chika is a marketing executive and colorism expert. In 2015, while getting her MBA at Stanford, she came across a casting call that openly discriminated against dark-skinned Black women. That motivated her to give a TEDx talk raising awareness of the issue of colorism and how women of color can still have self-confidence despite the prejudice in society. That recruiters tend to penalize candidates who ask about salary has to be the weirdest thing I've read today, but I believe it. If it's true, recruiters need to eliminate this kind of #bias , and focus on a candidate holistically. Why on Earth would you assume you know someone's motivations and intentions based on a basic, and to my mind, reasonable request for information? Salary is one facet of work, an important one. Now, on the other side of the coin, as a job seeker, you don't want an innocent question to boot you from the running for a good opportunity.
