Watch for forthcoming piece with strategies for improving how schools and colleges handle trauma that students experience.  Concrete suggestions are provided. Key here is that traumatic experiences are an equal opportunity offender -- sadly.  While small t trauma is more prevalent in low income families, higher income households can have toxic stress, abuse and trauma too.  And Big T trauma such as that caused by person-made and nature-made disasters is an equal opportunity destroyer. The key: our brains are remarkably plastic and recovery is possible --- the key here is to move forward focusing on brain strengths not weaknesses, recognizing that one is forever changed. Resiliency is about bouncing back -- there is no back. There is only forward. …see more

With the attacks in Barcelona, this LINKEDIN piece takes on even greater meaning.  Look at post-script too.  And for those who think this is politics and has no place in this forum, think again.  Violence and terrorism impact all of us --- whatever our profession, our workplace, our homes.  And we all have or know children. And we all need a better world -- whether based on our sense of values or economics or whatever else matters to us.  Please consider our children and their children and the world they need to inherit. …see more

For those who may be interested in the intersection between higher education (and all of its challenges) and bankruptcy law, please consider this interesting symposia. Interestingly, with all the colleges struggling, it is only recently that this topic has real meaning for many -- practitioners, GCs, presidents, trustees. Hope to see some of you there in October. And, no, it is not Paris France. It is the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas. (Note the irony of course on many levels.) …see more

For our economy, communities and moral fiber, we need to improve inequality. Quoting from Politico (edits): "Too few minority students are getting into the nation's most selective research universities, Center for American Progress argues in a new report out today..."The doors to America's top public colleges remain firmly closed to the vast majority of black and Latino undergraduate students,"... Just 2.8 million of the 10 million undergraduate students at public colleges in the fall of 2014 were black or Latino...The problem is worst in...south.." Undermatching's only 1 problem among many. …see more

Back to Work Blues? It’s a Real Thing. It’s Monday morning and Summer is over...You've got months before it’s Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays and Surprise!, you are feeling cranky. Doctors and mental health workers don't officially have a name for this. There's nothing specific in the official manual of mental disorders. But the Twitterverse calls your sadness #backtoworkblues or #holidayblues . Kids get it too. You know the feelings—cranky, uninspired by a million emails, unmotivated to deal with trivial (or big) work assessments, uninterested in petty complaints by co-workers and all you want to do is return to your summer lounge chair! What to do? First off, know that transitions between play and work are rough, so give yourself a little breathing room to be OK with it being a bit tough for a period. Consider booking another short getaway you can look forward to, ease back into work, add something new into your life like a cooking class or new exercise. Remember, there’s always next summer to plan for! Selected Excerpt: "The stark contrast of the joy and freedom of family and friend time with the drudgery of answering a zillion work emails, can be hard on your emotional well-being," …see more

GoFundMe Top Category? Paying Medical Bills Our bodies break down—and break. No surprise there. It’s not ‘if’ but ‘when’ and ‘what.’ But many Americans do not have insurance to cover all of our breaks, break-outs, break downs, diseases, conditions, and stress. What to do? Start a GoFundMe page. A full 1/3 of the site’s funding is to help with medical costs and costs related to their illness. Some 45% of Americans are “underinsured,” according to a report published last year by The Commonwealth Fund. Maybe crowdsourced funding to cover medical costs could big a 2020 political ‘Big Idea?’ …see more

If there’s one thing you could change in every hospital in the world, what would it be? The pandemic, and especially the first wave of cases, which overwhelmed many public health systems, have also made it clear that hospitals have some design flaws. The hospital-at-home services are booming, patients are becoming the point-of-care and life science labs are being deployed at hospitals. #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology …see more

Men’s health has a number of challenges, from hard to access services to embarrassing conditions that many rather not talk about. I’ve interviewed Sam Shah , Chief Medical Strategy Officer of Numan , who is taking a different approach by taking some of the stigma out of conditions – such as erectile dysfunction. Sam also used to be the Director of Digital Development at NHS in England. “Gender-based health inequalities are widening – but not how you’d think. Men are less likely to seek healthcare compared to women, and by helping men engage with our service, we can help solve some immediate problems. But more importantly, we help to diagnose other underlying conditions such as diabetes or testosterone deficiency.” To read the complete interview with Sam, join our Patreon community: https://lnkd.in/gJet4TS #patreon #digitalhealthcommunity #interview #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology …see more

Having a studio means endless opportunities to play around with our content- which we intend to do so throughout 2021. This is a snippet from our latest video, “Bioenhanced Supersoldiers” with some fun effects to further spice up the topic around military technologies used in healthcare. https://lnkd.in/ex3FfTd We also introduced our new video series called “Future Bits - Short Analyses of Digital Health and A.I.” This is shorter and snackable content in a video format that lets us react faster to digital health and A.I. news. I won’t be competing with large media outlets, but I’ll try to provide the necessary context as fast as possible for You. So far you seem to like it. Doesn’t sound better than a sleep apnoe mask. In other words: if I had to choose between wearing a sleep apnoe mask or having a device electrically stimulate my tongue during the day, I’d have a hard time deciding. "The eXciteOSA device authorized Friday is the first of its kind cleared to treat sleep apnea and snoring by improving tongue muscle function by delivering electrical stimulation to the tongue through a mouthpiece worn for 20 minutes a day. It helps retrain the tongue to prevent it from collapsing backwards and blocking airflow during sleep." #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology …see more

In my latest video, I’m elaborating on these 4 things that give me hope for 2021: SCIENCE - The scientific public has reacted to the news of the virus at an astonishing rate. Have you ever thought that the genome of a virus can be sequenced within 24 hours?! GOOD LEADERSHIP - Strong and clear-minded leaders like the PMs and presidents of New Zealand, Canada, Iceland, Singapore or Germany could safeguard their people more than others. HUMANITY - People dancing on balconies and really caring for each other like never before; and messages of hope, love and support soaring to medical personnel all over the world. HEALTHCARE - Today, decision-makers have realised that no society can live without well-operating healthcare. Maybe we needed a global stressful event that is a warning big enough for us to notice. Check out the video and join me in starting 2021 on a hopeful note! #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology …see more

Each week until the winter holidays, I’m going to reflect on a prediction I made in @The Medical Futurist’s e-book “Top Trends in Digital Health in 2020”. Prediction #4: Betting on its acquisition of Fitbit, Google will launch a new “Made by Google” line of fitness trackers ❌ 2020 Reality: Fitbit has been on a downslide since the Google acquisition: they cannot find their identity anymore and other watches can do the same in battery time and new functions too (e.g. ECG). There’s nobody who wanted Fitbit to thrive under Google more than me but even I’ve switched to a different fitness tracker now (Withings Scanwatch). #predictions #predictionsversusreality #2020indigitalhealth #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #ebook …see more
