As I traveled through the North Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of Congo for National Geographic back in March, I could not have imagined that news of an effective treatment for #Ebola would come some quickly. This kind of #globalhealth victory needs to be acknowledged and uplifted. Accompanied by a viable vaccine, this kind of development could help stop future outbreaks more quickly and effectively. Why do we need #WorldBreastfeedingWeek and other high-profile #publichealth commemorations? Because of events like what happened in the Kenyan parliament yesterday. MP Zulehka Hassan brought her baby into the parliamentary chambers because of an emergency that left her without child care. She got kicked out. There was a two-way tie for Best Tweetable Moment at #WomenWhoLead . Deanna Bass, Director of Global Diversity and Inclusion for Procter & Gamble , gets my vote for EVERYTHING for invoking the “OVER-estimation of male potential,” versus the perceived shortcomings of #womenleaders ! “It is imperative that we do the work of eradicating bias and getting women into the right roles," Bass said. "It is a myth that there aren’t enough qualified women in the pipeline. The system is broken, and we must fix it.” My other vote for #WomenWhoLead Tweet Champion goes to Nate Hurst, Chief Sustainability and Social Impact Officer for @Hewlett Packard. You cannot innovate for the future if you do not have women at the heart of leadership. Let women deliver—they deliver every day.” I’m also glad that Hurst talked about the need for #implicitbiastraining . It’s rampant in every sector. And Hurst says 70% of HP’s global team members are women! @Women Deliver #womensleadership …see more

It's quite inspirational listening to the panel at the "womengive | 17" event. Right now, Foundation For The Carolinas President and CEO Michael Marsicano is asking the distinguished panel, including Charlotte banking and philanthropic legend Hugh McColl, City of Charlotte Council Member Carlenia Ivory , Will Alston of Wells Fargo , Melissa Bodford of uBack and civic leader Liz Simmons about the most gratifying philanthropic donations they've ever made. McColl found it hard to single out just one, but the $5 million dollars he was able to donate to a hospital for research into a disease that affected his granddaughter springs to mind. Carlenia Ivory says she felt elated about a multi-million dollar project that would have brought jobs and training to Charlotte's inner city--until it fell through. The good news is that she's working on anther similar project that has a good chance of coming together. The unifying thread for all of the panelists? Giving is its own reward. Giving provides such tremendous fulfillment and satisfaction. #IUPUI #WomenGive17 #women #philanthropy #gendermatters …see more
