Something made me go back and read the LinkedIn article I wrote back in January of 2016, ahead of the International Conference on Family Planning in Nusa Dua, Indonesia. It's a deeply personal reflection comparing my mother Eloise Jones's life as a poor African American woman who gave birth to 10 children, versus my own journey to independence and professional expertise. I've told many people that as much as I adore babies and children, I knew that the kind of life I wanted to live would mean choosing not to have them myself. And I always knew that my mother's lack of options, her inability to limit her pregnancies may have given me life, but it effectively ended her dreams and goals. That's why I'm a vocal, proud defender of a woman's right to choose when and if she wants to have children, and how many she wants to have. I owe it to my mother, and women all around the world, to speak truth to power about family planning as a global Civil Rights issue.
