One of the many reasons I'm so excited about starting a new job with the Global Press Journal next week is that I already know my grasp of #globaldevelopment and #sustainability issues will grow exponentially. Every story produced by the #womenjournalists in 28 countries around the world offers a window in the the social and economic justice issues, #agriculture and #environment challenges, and into the #gender and #humanrights barriers that block progressive development. These skilled women journalists are given a voice and a mandate to employ their intellect and energy to inform and educate people in their communities and beyond. They're changing the tone and tenor of #internationalreporting in revelatory ways. This story by Zimbabwean journalist Fortune Moyo is a perfect example. She explores the challenges for farmers who had hoped that growing winter wheat would boost economies and food supplies. I was so absorbed in #AspenIdeasHealth activities last week, I'm just now catching up on what transpired at the #Dakar Summit to End #FemaleGenitalMutilation and #ChildMarriage . Here's the amazing headline: The deputy Grand Imam of Al-Azhar University in #Cairo , #Egypt and his team wrote a new Fatwa to advise that both girls and boys should be aged 18 before entering into marriage, in order for them to have the appropriate level of maturity. As well as the fatwa, the activists, religious and traditional leaders, government ministers and religious officials came up with a declaration on Africans taking a lead to stop #FGM and child marriage, which they are asking countries to sign up to. Many organisations aim to eliminate the practices by 2030. Just learned about an important new initiative, "VOW to End Child Marriage," a project of Girls Not Brides: The Global Partnership to End Child Marriage and corporate partners Crate and Barrel and The Knot wedding planner and registry. From the VOW web page: "Every year, millions of couples celebrate their love by getting married and millions of their family and friends celebrate with them. In the U.S. alone, Americans spend $100 billion on weddings think invitations, wedding dresses, rings, venues, flowers, gift registries, honeymoons, and more all on saying “I do.” "But at a time when a child is married somewhere in the world every three seconds, who’s invested in making sure that girls can say, “I don’t”? We sought to understand: does the 'joy of giving' lead us to a happier life?" "The study examined these issues by looking at the same households over a number of years. It offers new insights on how life satisfaction is shaped by household characteristics - such as composition, income, gender roles within the family, and how decisions around charitable giving are made. The findings provide strong evidence about the link between happiness and giving, and illuminate differences in how men and women experience the joy of giving."
