COVID-19 is personal and, if you become infected, there are a wide range of possible outcomes. How safe is safe enough?
Have you ever wondered how generalists thrive in a specialized world? I recently had a chance to sit down with David Epstein , author of Range, a fantastic book that covers this topic. Personally, I found the concepts of kind and wicked learning environments to be an interesting part of the book. David’s message: “In wicked learning environments, breadth is the hack.” Watch the clip below and leave us a comment about how you’ve found that having a breadth of experience or specialization has helped in your career or facilitated your learning! #Specialization #CrossFunctionality #Generalist #Range #Indistractable P.S. David’s book, Range, and my new book, Indistractable, were recently placed on the BookPal Longlist for the 2019 Outstanding Works of Literature (OWL) Award in the “Big Idea” category. The five books in each of the fifteen categories represent the top reading recommendations for individuals and teams to inspire new ideas, expand perspectives, and fall in love with reading. Congrats to all other authors and works on the Longlist! Check out the full release at the link in the comments below. …see more
I’ve been mulling the seeming “race toward the generic” happening with brands over the past few years. Companies are looking and sounding like each other more and more. And while this excellent piece by Tom Roach at BBH London is more skewed toward advertising, the same applies to brand. In fact, to me, the root cause of the advertising dilemma is due to companies not doing the brand work up front to understand what role they need to play in peoples’ lives. #brand #advertising #marketing #racingtowardthegeneric #sameness …see more
Oops Wrong Conclusion: This is Why Its Hard to Advance Medicine and Public Health Remember when “low-fat and high-carb” diets were all the rage, only to be proved (years later), to lead to weight gain, diabetes and heat disease—in part because of all the sugar added to processed foods? Or remember the buzz that oatmeal will stave-off heart disease? (Or eating only meat will not cause heart disease?!!) And I can’t keep up—is coffee good or bad for us?? Well now we can add the lowly and pure aspirin to the list of things that don’t actually help stave-off heart disease (assuming you are just fine). With so much hyping by the food industry, academic research centers and wanna-be food celebrities pushing ‘nutrition’ and wellness, it is almost impossible to figure out what’s actually ‘good for you’ (and I mean from a longitudinal, epidemiological, medical-evidentiary manner...). Selected Excerpt: “The message for the public is that healthy older people should not begin taking aspirin. “If you don’t need it, don’t start it,” Dr. McNeil said.” …see more

What's the ROI of "Street Cred?" 👀 Why do most #b2b companies completely fail to understand this concept? Street Cred is just a simple way of saying how much clout a brand carries - and while B2C companies like Yeti and Supreme have created entire EMPIRES out of understanding how street cred works, most B2B companies simply struggle because they've lost the humanity in the technicality. But unless you are LITERALLY selling to robots, you can't afford to ignore your street cred. There is an absurd focus on ABM and "data" and not enough on earned media, courting influencers, creating brand partnerships. Let's dig deeper into Yeti as an example. They sell...thermal coolers. Not exactly the stuff dreams are made of...YET, Yeti has become cooler the way Dyson is a vacuum or Patagonia is simply a jacket. Sales went from $39 million to $469 million...in 3 years. A big part of their success has been due to developing street cred with everyone from pitmasters to outdoorsy types. They have over 130 contracted brand ambassadors. During the pandemic, when a company selling luxury coolers for $300 bucks should have tanked, they excelled. Why? Street Cred. Develop it before you start picking it apart for ROI. #b2bmarketing #b2bsales #b2bstrategy #b2btech #b2b …see more

🍗🍗🍗 A fried chicken triple hat win?!?!? LinkedIn Top Voice (not once, twice, but three times) 3-4 years ago, I hardly hanged out on LinkedIn, I thought it was a place to find jobs and put up your resume. It was hardly a place for a creative nor an entrepreneur. But... LinkedIn has changed... It changed to be a content creator's heaven. It changed to be a community. It changed to be a channel (for all). Being a LinkedIn channel has opened many doors for me, and I love to share this win with everyone. You can be a voice on LinkedIn. I spent many hours perfecting communication and video skills. Still, it's starts with your knowledge and personality. Your voice and experience is unique. Be a channel on LinkedIn. Be The-Go-To Channel. Be the voice. I've set up a #stringcomp I'm giving away a Blinkist subscription to help someone level up their content game. I led a project years ago and Jessica, the most experienced member of my team, was struggling. She was actually performing brilliantly, but she felt burnt out. The client we were serving wasn’t an easy one. "I can’t go on like this much longer," Jessica told me. I reassured her that I appreciated her work and that I would give her a break from assignments like this one. I then moved Jessica on to another project as we completed the last few days without her. Upon wrapping up, we received stellar feedback from the client, and I knew who I wanted to call first. I told Jessica it was some of the best work we had ever done, thanked her specifically for her role, and told her I knew things wouldn’t have gone as well without her. You could “hear” the smile on the other line. She thanked me (twice) for taking the time to call. She finished by saying: “You don’t know how much this phone call means to me. I’d be happy to help out on a similar project in the future.” That’s the effect of sincere and specific praise. When I was clinically obese, I wanted nothing more than to blame McDonald’s or other fast-food brands. I wanted to blame Mars, Coca-Cola, Nestle, and the entire unhealthy food industry. I wanted to blame them for my health. But as tempting as that was, the food these companies made was not the real reason I was overweight. I was obese because I was eating my feelings. When I was bored, I would eat. When I was lonely, I would eat. When I felt guilty for overeating, I would eat. Behind all of my overeating was a desire to escape. And this desire to escape is crucial to understanding the roots of distraction. Distraction is always about a desire to escape discomfort. Instead of thinking that we’re addicted to food or technology and thinking that there’s nothing to do about it, we can use these uncomfortable emotions to motivate ourselves toward traction rather than distraction. Only by being honest and open about our problems can we begin to address them. What’s one unhealthy habit you’re in the process of changing at the moment? #Indistractable #ProblemSolving #Behavior #Motivation #Growth …see more
