Hey LinkedIn fam, I need your help. After a LONG hiatus, I'm restarting my newsletter. I'm super excited as I've been investing lots of time in it and I'll be sharing some awesome, completely original content. Thing is, many subscribers won't remember me since I haven't written in so long. The first newsletter does a great job of overcoming that, but... I've got to get subscribers to open it first. So... Which email subject line would you be most likely to open? (If you have time, I'd love to read your thoughts in the comments below.) And if you're interested in reading some great stories that relate simple, practical tips to improve your emotional intelligence, make sure to sign up! https://lnkd.in/eu_B5iJ …see more
This is a hard time for most humans alive today in one form or another. If you are feeling low and just need to chat it out, please feel free to shoot me a message. No matter how busy I feel right now coworking from my house with my wife while co-home schooling and remote learning our two kids, I promise I will do my best to respond. Please destroy my inbox! #covid19 #multifamily #technology #thankyou
I gave a talk about why healthcare needs a trip to Mars for Boehringer Ingelheim at their global HQ and got questions here on LinkedIn whether I'd release the talk. We created a summary of the storyline and the major messages in this short video. Here is why healthcare needs a trip to Mars. I hope you will like it. #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #health #healthy #video #keynote #speakerlife #mars #healthcareonmars …see more
Modern advertising is predicated on the idea you have to offer people "an experience" when in fact we should just be making it easier to buy things. I have a lovely website where you can buy my book with one click, and get it delivered across the planet. Facebook and Linkedin insist I can make ads to: Learn More Download Donate! Play Game Follow Join Event Signup Apply I can tell people to do ANYTHING except BUY MY BOOK Why are we so afraid to actually sell something in Advertising. Is it beneath us? Do we have to dick around making AR "experiences" or make people download some dumb game to remember us. …see more
“Daddy?” she queried. “Just a second,” I grunted. “I need to respond to one thing.” My eyes were glued to my phone, my fingers tapping away, writing a response. I wish I could tell you what she said in that moment, but I can’t. While she was telling me her dream superpower, I was busy staring at my phone. By the time I looked up, she had left the room. Thinking of starting your own non-profit organization? Ben Mangan came up with these 7 questions you should be able to answer before starting one. This very same list of questions can easily be used for business ventures as well. Thanks for letting me share this wonderful list, Ben! 1) What problem(s) are you aiming to solve, for whom, and in which places? 2) Why does this problem matter to society, and why has it not been solved effectively by markets, civil society or government? 3) What are the causes of this problem? Root causes? The systems involved? Indirect causes? 4) What has society learned about trying to solve this problem? What have we learned about what works and what does not? What research is available that describes these efforts? 5) How will your approach build upon these learnings? 6) What other organizations, governments and other entities currently work to solve this problem? Where are the gaps in their effectiveness? 7) Are you certain that the people you aim to help wouldn't be better off if you just gave them a pro rata share of the money you'll raise, so they have resources to solve their problems in their own ways? …see more
After nearly 20 years in advertising, seeing countless quantitative presentations about "how people feel", "what people care about" , "how people will change", "what Millennials/Gen Z etc think" , I can only conclude that all of this research has been utterly useless. This is not new news, but people perform for surveys, they tick boxes that sound rather nice. Please can we look towards data on how people are actually behaving, how they've changed in the past, where they spend their money etc I'm sure right now "48.5% of people are thinking about moving home" , 38.3% are seeing "brands which care for the planet", 23.8% of people are "actively looking to spend more time meditating" or "will seek new ways to give back to each other". I'm sure 72.3% of people " want companies to act in ways which show mutual respect, forgiveness and foster understanding" And I can tell you now, it's all just people ticking a box on a form and hoping they are near the end of the survey and they can get back to buying some new reimagined pants on Instagram. …see more
The weird 2021 feeling is the feeling we've gone from living in the real world, augmented by "virtual stuff", to living in a digital realm, with the "real world" as an occasional breakout room, or as a background. Even before the pandemic, in many countries for many demographic, more awake hours were spent online than off. We grew up going ONTO the internet, we used modems to go "online" & would then swiftly return to "reality". We had lines. Space, time & our perceptions of reality now seem to bend. The feeling of connection seems more about intimacy than presence. Distance seems utterly irrelevant (Unless close enough to touch). One can live a life augmented by the presence of others constantly, despite being alone. Time & even Time zones seem less relevant than ever. Intimacy seems grounded more in ability to be vulnerable, than the time you've spent together. It becomes aystemetric in the age of "following" & "followers" I've long laughed at instagram types as they constantly scouted the planet seeing museums/art/mountains/gigs purely as backgrounds for images to take. But for many of us now, the real world seems like the context and backdrop to a mainly virtual world, but as embellishment to where life really seems to happen. Online …see more

Emotional intelligence: When is it good to allow your emotions to dictate your behavior? When is it bad? When is it a good idea to use emojis in professional communication? Will robots and AI eventually develop the ability to experience emotional behavior? Those are just the few of the great questions Tiffani Bova and I discussed on her newest “WHAT’S NEXT!” #podcast . As the majority of folks norm to the new reality of working from home, practicing #socialdistance , sanitize frequently, etc., we are all going through emotions ranging from amusement to restlessness, to anger, etc. I would just like to take a moment and recognize the Herculean efforts and sacrifices being made by first responders, hospital staff (nurses especially), retail staff, government workers, and especially our military. They don't have the luxury of working from home. They can't practice social distancing. They are literally and figuratively fighting for our lives while jeopardizing theirs, during the most uncertain and unprecedented time I've ever encountered. Thank you for everything you do. Truly humbled. #grateful …see more

I have no idea how the reflection of my reporter’s notebook wound up in this picture I took outside City Hall in Ferguson, Missouri. It must be yet another example of the astonishing serendipity that led me to the literal epicenter of America’s racial justice debate in recent years, to report on the impact of racism and implicit bias on maternal health outcomes, for my National Geographic Magazine freelance assignment. #maternalhealth #maternalmortality #reproducticehealth #reporductivejustice …see more
