"Many people may be nervous or think it is insane to make a bold move like this in the middle of a pandemic." In the past 7 months, no business owners have escaped the paradigm shifting impact of Covid-19. Small businesses have faced uniqued obstacles that no MBA program prepares for, but in these obstacles also lie opportunities to shift and grow. In this blog, my friend and partner Jamie Ratner of CertifiKID talks about why she ignored a chorus of "are you CRAZY!?" and decided to acquire another company during a pandemic. …see more

This is an insightful article on how people promotions impact company culture and performance. The onus is on a company to make its promotions’ process well-defined and transparent. When employees are clear about how decisions are made on promotions, they know what is expected of them, and where their company is headed. Otherwise, employees are demoralised, and engage in unproductive guesswork, which helps nobody. All companies claim to have their own ‘culture’, but surveys show it is often superficial, and not ingrained amongst the employees. Also, criteria for promotions in one company may not work for another. It’s the guiding philosophy of the leadership team which determines the ‘culture’ of a company. Michael C. Covid-19 is ravaging the global economy and presenting employers with unprecedented challenges. For Gravity chief executive Dan Price, that challenge was crushing: The company's revenue had essentially been cut in half. Price was faced with a grave decision: Lay off 20% of his employees or go bankrupt. Price refused to accept either option. Instead, he decided to do something almost unheard of in today's business environment: He asked his employees what to do. "As a CEO, I don't believe in top-down decisions," Price said on Twitter. "I spent 40 hours talking with every employee about our finances and asked for ideas." What followed was a master class in emotional intelligence--and a major lesson in how to run a business in the face of difficult challenges. Powerful statements from Melinda Gates in this article. So many great points that she brought up. The fact that she emphasized our work systems are archaically designed for men who have supporting wives at home it’s a super important point to understand. In this day and age, with so many families having a woman/wife/Mom who’s working and more men (whether they have stay-home-wife or not) interested in participating in parenting and childcare, the mindsets and the work environments need to adjust. I also admire Melinda’s point about the fact that we don’t have “pipeline” problem for not having more women at the leadership positions, but rather we have problem retaining women at work; it’s 10x more difficult for women to balance work and life due to the false social and professional expectations. #equalrights #femaleadership #retainingwomen #womenleadership …see more

This article isn’t wrong “We may be used to it now, but step outside our new normal for a moment. Brad Pitt can’t tell me stories of the lifelong struggle to meet someone to date. I can’t relate to him. The best books are people who have been through the struggle. Parachuted from the finance ministry, Reddy’s successor, D. Subbarao, responded to the global crisis follow collapse of Lehman Brothers in September 2008 by flooding the financial system with money and bringing down the policy rate to its historic low. Indian banks were also allowed to restructure those loans that had gone bad. It helped borrowers—affected by demand recession globally and the collapse of the exports markets—who were not in a position to pay back to the banks. India could stage a sharp, V-shaped recovery but the ultra-loose monetary policy and loan restructuring had sown the seeds of inflation and piles of bad assets. What happened next? A lack of focus comes at a cost. The challenge at work, of course, has always been to dodge things that distract us. But today’s distractions feel different. The amount of information available, the speed at which it can be disseminated, and the ubiquity of access to new content on our devices has made for a trifecta of distraction. What’s the cost of all this? In 1971, the psychologist Herbert A. Simon emphasized that a wealth of information means a dearth of something else: attention. The workplace is rapidly changing, and in the near future, there will be two kinds of people in the world: those who let their attention and lives be controlled and coerced by others and those who proudly call themselves “Indistractable.” Check out my recent CNBC article (link in comments!) on the most important skill of the 21st century and be sure to share your thoughts below! #Indistractable #Focus #Attention #HumanBehavior #Psychology …see more

The idea of building a habit is very appealing. The popular notion that tasks can be put on autopilot makes habits sound effortless. Wouldn’t it be great if you could simply make a habit out of doing tasks like exercising, journaling, paying bills, or running a side business? Unfortunately, you can’t. Habits don’t work that way. Habits are a type of learning. By forming a habit, the brain frees the mind to do other things without deliberation. To change a behavior you need to understand the difference between a “habit” and a “routine.” How do we tell the difference between behaviors that are good candidates to become habits and those best left as routines? Elon Musk was frustrated. He had been experiencing mild sniffles, a cough, and a slight fever--enough symptoms to convince him to get tested for Covid-19. Musk, who obviously has more resources and greater access to medical treatment than the average person, ended up taking a total of four tests. "Something extremely bogus is going on," Musk tweeted. "Two tests came back negative, two came back positive. Same machine, same test, same nurse." The internet was quick to respond. Some reached out to Musk to see how he was feeling. Writer Stephen King simply replied, "You're pos." A scientist openly mocked Musk, calling him "Space Karen" and accusing the tech CEO of not reading up on the test "before complaining to his millions of followers." But then, something very interesting happened. What followed was a master class in communication, persuasion, and emotional intelligence. This excellent article by Chip Cutter from his interview with New York architect Vishaan Chakrabarti casts light on the drab uniformity of today’s modern urban landscapes. This is of particular relevance to Asia, where I live. So much of the beauty and distinctiveness of local architectural traditions, many dating back hundreds or thousands of years, have been literally bulldozed into oblivion, replaced by Western temples of consumerism. Like the hutongs and courtyard homes of Beijing, or the grey brick shikumen style archways and homes of Shanghai, or the red brick structures of old Taipei. Smartphone and app makers didn’t invent distraction – they’re just the latest culprit. Before smartphones, we blamed distraction on television 📺 And before that, it was the telephone ☎️ Go back a little further and it was comic books 🦸 Or the radio 📻 Go back more than 2,000 years, and Socrates was even criticising the written word, for causing ‘forgetfulness in the learners’ souls’. Distraction has been around for as long as we have! I recently authored a piece that appeared in Psyche Magazine where I discussed how to become indistractable. "'I have a dream.' "[Over] fifty years ago, on August 28, 1963, American civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., uttered those words in his most famous speech. Using that captivating refrain, King expressed his dream, or hope, that one day people would enjoy life free from racial prejudice. "...Even in lands where some progress has been made in combating racial and other forms of prejudice, the question remains: Have the improvements really rooted out the deep-seated feelings of people or have they merely curbed the outward manifestation of those feelings? Some believe that at best such improvements only help prevent discrimination but may be powerless at eliminating prejudice. "Why so? "Because discrimination is an act that can be seen and punished by law, whereas prejudice is related to people’s inner thoughts and emotions, which cannot be easily regulated. "Therefore, any attempt to eliminate prejudice must not merely curb discriminatory acts but also change a person’s thoughts and feelings toward people of another group. "Can this really be done? It's been a gnarly day and mentally you're running on empty, right? Not quite. New research suggests how you think about willpower could be preventing you from doing your best work. Do you realize that you are in this rut but can't seem to find the willpower to overcome it? You're definitely not alone in this situation. This is called ego-depletion. Ego-depletion is a theory that willpower is connected to a limited reserve of mental energy, and once you run out of that energy, you're more likely to lose self-control. This theory would seem to explain your post-work defeat. But new studies suggest that we've been thinking about willpower all wrong and the theory of ego-depletion isn't true. Even worse, holding on to the idea that willpower is a limited resource can actually be bad for you, making you more likely to lose control and act against your better judgment. Much like motivation, perceiving willpower through an old, inaccurate lens can cause us to approach our goals in the wrong way. Check out my latest article on Inc. Magazine about willpower at the link in the comments! In it, I share insights about “The Real Nature of Willpower” and a new decision-making tool. #Indistractable #Willpower #Temperament #HumanBehavior #DecisionMaking …see more

How many influential business leaders have you seen nix a little bit of fun as a waste of time and energy? This article from The New York Times is a refreshing reminder that "guilty-pleasures" are good for you. “A guilty pleasure is something that we enjoy, but we know we’re either not supposed to like, or that liking it says something negative about us. That negative thing often ends up being an association with categories of identity we disparage and marginalize in society. Consider what separates sports and reality TV. The idea of someone apologizing for watching the NBA finals sounds silly, but the implied apology when someone says, “Ugh, I know ‘The Bachelor is awful but I can’t stop watching it” is normalized." The Journal of Media Psychology conducted a study proving that playing a video game or watching a movie or television can restore some psychological resources and reduce stress. 🦄✨🦄 Yesterday I indulged in lemon bars, the purchase of a jacket covered in rainbow sequins, wearing my favorite pair of unicorn slippers while watching Dynasty on Netflix. #NoGuilt 🦄✨🦄 BONUS READ Pleasure Activism: The Politics of Feeling Good #MentalHealth #Leadership #Happiness #ChantelShares …see more

I learned about Dr. Ola, and about Uber 's reach on the African continent, and about Ethiopia's rock hewn churches, in the past 15 minutes alone on Africa.com . #Africa #StayWoke #LifeLongLearning https://lnkd.in/eE7-pNq …see more

For the reasons detailed in my April Project Syndicate article (link below), many of us have been extremely worried about the spread of COVID-19 in developing countries. Initial optimism about avoiding major outbreaks has given way to troubling numbers that involve massive human pain and suffering (as illustrated by these charts from the Wall Street Journal -- link also below). https://lnkd.in/esm7Ff2 https://lnkd.in/esm7Ff2 #ProSyn #covid #developingcountries #em #emergingmarkets #economy #wsj …see more

How sweet would life be if we could all be “indistractable?” No matter where we are, whether at work, at home, or otherwise, distraction seems to be a common thread. Endless texts and calls, the pings, dings, and rings of notifications, or colleagues interrupting you at work… all these distractions put a wrench in our plans. Check out a segment that The List TV had on becoming “indistractable” at the link in the comments below! During this segment, I share “4 Ways to Beat Distractions and Take Back your Focus.” After watching, tag a few friends / colleagues who you think should watch too. #Indistractable #Attention #HumanBehavior #Distraction #TheListTV …see more

Consumers of Sugar Beware : It might be way worse for us than eating those yummy mashed potatoes or potato chips ! Not to be a bore before Thanksgiving but this is a really important article about sugar and it's impact on our health . Be well and be safe during this holiday season . Selected Excerpt : The documents show that in 1968 a trade group called the Sugar Research Foundation, known today as the Sugar Association, funded a research project on animals to shed light on the connection between sugar and heart health. But when the research pointed to a mechanism by which sugar might promote not only heart disease but also bladder cancer, the industry group ended the study and never published the results. …see more

Really love this piece about Andrew Yang. I have felt for the last 10 years that the idea of politics being left wing or right wing makes zero sense in the modern eras. Bernie Sanders and Trump shared more supporters than with people on their own "side". Politicians either look forwards or backwards. They either try to reclaim the glory of the past, or to anticipate and make the most of what's coming. It's good to finally see debates about change and what technology means brought about by Yang. https://lnkd.in/dHBrMsk …see more
