I think the current $1.9 trillion aid package is misguided. Why are we sending out checks to people that are already employed? In addition we don't need more PPP, there is ample liquidity in the market to provide capital for the businesses that deserve to be funded. With the benefit of hindsight, I think 50% of the March PPP programs were a complete waste of taxpayers money. There are only two mandates we the taxpayers should fund at this point. 1) More unemployment support to those that have been displayed by the pandemic. We need to give them more time to find jobs in the new America 2.0 digitized economy. 2) More Capital to accelerate the distribution of the vaccine. Everyone knowns someone who wants the vaccine but can't get it. Why spend more money bailing out another airline that should be allowed to go bankrupt and reduce its capacity when there are millions that can't get inoculated. So far the logistics of the vaccine roll out have been painfully mismanaged. if its money that is required to fix this problem then there is no better investment. For example, no stock buy backs, no purchase of stocks using margin or leverage, no short selling and redistribution of shares for free. These are all really bad ideas. Everybody back off! Two things hit me about these tech companies announcing working from home policies. It should never be remote vs office, but a combo based on how you feel and what's the best way to get things done. Words of comfort to those who apply for jobs on here. I'm lucky to know some of the most brilliant people you can imagine, world class people , award winning, celebrated, wonderful folk, and they are all feel down and rejected right now. They've applied & been rejected for several good roles on Linkedin, they've not made any first rounds, and they think they are not good enough. Not by a long shot. Applications on here (for many) are a total waste of time. When we made it free and easy to apply for thousands of jobs, we also ensured that HR would use AI and clumsy tech to filter out all but the most boring risk free candidates. Brilliant people will always fail these. I would suggest the following. 1) Make a simple website with the specific ways you are extraordinary, in simple words. Show proof. 2)Think about roles you are genuinely perfect for. There will not be many. Be honest. 3) Never write to HR, only to a senior executive. In 100 words get their attention , interest and send on a link to your site. 4) Try to find companies who want to work around your brilliance, not around their limited imagination. It may not work, but it's a lot better than feeling depressed because a HR manager doesn't know how to recruit and it's far more likely to bring about good things. …see more

I continue to be amazed by how many people managers still don't understand that today's workforce no longer responds to a “top down, I tell you what to do, you punch a clock for every task and I micro-manage your work and you'll like it” style of “leadership”. The culture and dynamics of people leadership have completely changed. It's now an equal partnership of supporting common goals and bringing people along. It's about showing people that they are not disposable objects, and that you genuinely care about them as human beings. It's about being transparent, genuine and kind. And most importantly, earning trust. Earning trust by not breaking your promises. By not being abrasive, crass, callous, vulgar, violent and rude. By not misleading or lying to your people, hiding things from them, or operating with alternate objectives and hidden agendas in mind. As more and more "new-school" leaders and companies emerge, the "old guard" of management drifts further into isolation and irrelevance. Learn to lead from a place of honesty, transparency, and kindness. From first principles. Pretty sure the entire recruitment process should change for the knowledge economy and the best roles within it.  1) Resume's or CV's are about the worst way to judge people. Would be way better to have personal websites where people could articulate what actually matters. Their values, skills and personality. Their hopes and dreams, faults and eccentricities. What they believe and evidence of all this. Our fears on the data collected by large companies, speakers listening to us, "surveillance capitalism" and a whole tranche of the paranoid, is largely based on a complex million billion dollar ecosystem that doesn't know or care to know who we are, but is trying to sell us a more expensive and relevant shampoo, a new perfume we may like, to get us to enroll in an MBA etc. What's far more damaging about modern media is that the only way to make money in modern ad/click funded media is to stoke OUTRAGE. It's to create ever more compelling and simplistic narratives that feed envy, rage, jealousy, resentment, fear, or shock. Our animal like instincts are being biohacked. Our attention is weaponized. Pieces that moderate, articles that pay attention to facts, words which form bonds and bridge divides are unprofitable. This should be the greatest concern of the modern media environment and yet nobody seems to care. When people receive an email from an Executive late at night, off hours, on the weekend, etc., they immediately feel compelled to jump into action. As I progressed into management, I would do my best to not send emails off hours unless it was a "house on fire" emergency. I would also advise my staff of same, but I never had a really good way to truly police for exceptions and would, sometimes, inevitably randomize people unintentionally. This, until yesterday. Last week, I spoke with a recent grad who asked for advice on how to find "aha moments" in his career and life. My response was that you cannot map or prepare every step of your career to optimize for aha moments. Instead, aha moments come, go, and may reemerge just like opportunities. Instead of anticipating for aha moments, keep a curious and open mind on opportunities that come your way. Be surrounded by peers and mentors who can help identify these moments. Aha moments will come in different shapes and sizes, but also at different times. It's so so easy to start comparing ourselves to others then try to expedite our own timeline. While some competition is healthy and we should always act with a sense of urgency, never feel that need to fit and adhere yourselves to someone else's timeline. When employees start leaving your team, and managers complain about employees not having loyalty, other managers or companies "poaching" them, or making last-minute desperate counters with things they should have done long ago, it's time to fire those managers for not doing their jobs of building great teams and growing and empowering their people. People have choices, and employment at will cuts both ways. They will stay when their work is interesting, the pay is competitive, their work environment is healthy, and their manager is kind, understanding and knows how to grow their careers. They will leave when those things are not offered in their current job and find a job that does. They will leave toxic work environments even faster. So don't blame them. Sadly I think this year has been the ultimate proof that we don’t take mental health remotely as seriously as we should. We’ve kept kids away from each other, told people to not to go outside, and to distrust and be distant from each other. We’ve injected endless zoom calls, social media and anxiety directly into our brains and to fill all aspects of our lives with algorithms optimized only to monetize endorphin rushes. We closed gyms and the world with zero thought for the moderation they provide. We’ve removed our ability to smile at strangers, communicate expressively or embrace each other. And all with seemingly zero regard for what this may to us, our kids, the vulnerable, the different. If mental health had physical symptoms, I wonder how different things would be. There was an article about "Zoom etiquette" posted here that, quite frankly, REALLY rubs me the wrong way. If you have pets and kids in the background, we love to see them!! If there's noise, it's OK, we'll mute you and laugh about it :). In Sweden there is an app where you can find out where anyone lives and what their direct phone number is. After nearly 20 years in advertising, seeing countless quantitative presentations about "how people feel", "what people care about" , "how people will change", "what Millennials/Gen Z etc think" , I can only conclude that all of this research has been utterly useless. This is not new news, but people perform for surveys, they tick boxes that sound rather nice. Please can we look towards data on how people are actually behaving, how they've changed in the past, where they spend their money etc I'm sure right now "48.5% of people are thinking about moving home" , 38.3% are seeing "brands which care for the planet", 23.8% of people are "actively looking to spend more time meditating" or "will seek new ways to give back to each other". And, therefore, they are worth more for their experience than what their age accredits them with. Whether you engage them full-time or part-time, as a consultant or as a part of the in-house team, it’s certainly a good idea for young founders enroll the expertise of someone who’s navigated the deep waters of a formal organization and can guide them in their journey to building one. Here is a little challenge. Take a note of the next 20 ads you are served on your laptop/desktop and your phone. Is this really the best we can do? Terrible targeting, stupid retargeting, creative that's not been worth a human approving. Click on an ad and see what happens? It's like nobody expected you do to it. Look at the horror that is "you may also like" AdTech is close to a $100bn industry that seems to have entirely failed to work for anyone except itself. If an planes engines cut out at 40,000ft most planes can glide easily for many miles, most with skilled pilots and a lot of work can land without casualties. That’s what this working from home era feels like. We’re all quick to point out it’s working , because so far few companies or people have failed. But you can’t take off this way, you can’t travel far this way, it takes a lot more work to make up for it. You can cope but you don’t design for this I accept for some companies based in software for example, it’s far far less of an issue, but most companies need trust, ideas, belonging, togetherness.
