The responsibility of a company is to serve the customer. The responsibility of leadership is to serve their people so that their people may better serve the customer. If leaders fail to serve their people first, both customer and company will suffer.

When we feel stress our bodies release cortisol. Cortisol impairs rational thinking & decision making. In a toxic culture we are biologically more likely to make a bad decision or do something that is ethically questionable. Healthy corporate cultures matter.

Hey kids, we're one week in to 2019 and I've got one more resolution that you can still add. I'm sure you can guess what it is. PAY. DOWN. YOUR. DEBT. That is without a doubt the most important thing you can do for your future Of course you want health and happiness, and everybody wants everybody to have that, but in terms of taking care of your family and you, paying down your debt is No. 1. If you want to find financial freedom, you need to retire all debt — and yes that includes your mortgage. Craft a plan to speed up principal payments on your debt, whether that be on your mortgage, a student loan debt or credit card debt. If you have mountains of different kinds of debt, tackle your credit card debt first, because that’s typically the debt with the highest interest rates. Look at your credit card and you say to it, ‘I’m paying off your balance buddy, and I’m going to do that before July.' …see more

I think the current $1.9 trillion aid package is misguided. Why are we sending out checks to people that are already employed? In addition we don't need more PPP, there is ample liquidity in the market to provide capital for the businesses that deserve to be funded. With the benefit of hindsight, I think 50% of the March PPP programs were a complete waste of taxpayers money. There are only two mandates we the taxpayers should fund at this point. 1) More unemployment support to those that have been displayed by the pandemic. We need to give them more time to find jobs in the new America 2.0 digitized economy. 2) More Capital to accelerate the distribution of the vaccine. Everyone knowns someone who wants the vaccine but can't get it. Why spend more money bailing out another airline that should be allowed to go bankrupt and reduce its capacity when there are millions that can't get inoculated. So far the logistics of the vaccine roll out have been painfully mismanaged. if its money that is required to fix this problem then there is no better investment. Can we stop calling companies tech companies now? If you make great pizza and have a website, you are a pizza company not a tech company. If you make amazing shoes helped by 3D printers, you are still not a tech company. If you make all your money from selling advertising you are a media company, regardless of the technology you use. You are probably not a "tech company that happens to sell coffee". Companies now operate in what's best called "the modern world". Dear recruiters, I know you have an extremely difficult job. The hiring market is white hot and getting worse (better, for candidates) by the hour. We all get pinged repeatedly, daily. I mostly don't mind. However, here are a few rules you should follow to help you improve your contact:hire ratio and not turn candidates off to your pitch: 1) Don't email candidates at work. Just don't. It's incredibly unprofessional. If you email me at work (and I get these daily), you are guaranteed to be blocked and added to Junk Mail. 2) Take the time to read candidate profiles to see where their interests lie, where they are in their careers, and how your role would help them get ahead. Emailing blindly for stuff that clearly doesn't fit just turns candidates off. 3) Don't force a fit. Ever. For any reason. Don't lie. Be as transparent as possible about the opportunity. You're talking to a highly educated populous with access to data and inside company networks that you don't have. We're not dumb and we do our own research. Start with this. Adhere to integrity and first principles. Candidates actually like hearing from you about opportunities they may not otherwise have. What they don't like is to be pestered, intruded upon, and lied to. Thank you for considering the feedback. …see more

Instagram is causing a mental health crisis that few are talking about. It's not just that we are nonchalantly scrolling the height of the Empire State building each day and not doing something better. It's not just that we are comparing our lives with others that are showing off and often least happy but trying to project otherwise. It's not just the body image projected ( often photoshopped)  that's made us feel insecure about how we look. It's not just the culture of personal branding that leads to narcissism. Or that we are now living to broadcast, not to experience. Or that we now don't seek connections but validation from strangers. It's everything. It's a total shift in they way we experience, compare, project and curate life and I think it's damaging beyond anything people have noted. Lecture over. …see more

“Would you give a second chance to an entrepreneur who has tried and failed?” is a question that I often hear. 90% of startups fail and most failures are painful lessons. Smart entrepreneurs reflect on their shortcomings and apply these lessons to their next venture. They just need someone to believe in them & give them a #SecondChance . Joaquin Phoenix captured this beautifully in his #Oscar acceptance speech. "I’ve been selfish, I’ve been cruel at times, hard to work with and I’m grateful, but so many of you in this room have given me a second chance and I think that’s when we’re at our best, when we support each other. Not when we cancel each other out for past mistakes, but when we help each other to grow, when we educate each other, when we guide each other toward redemption." - Joaquin Phoenix …see more

Define responsibilities, clearly set and measure accountability for outcomes. 3. In the case of equal equity ownership, discuss what should happen when someone outperforms or under-performs and make provisions for it. 4. Value creation takes time. Two things hit me about these tech companies announcing working from home policies. It should never be remote vs office, but a combo based on how you feel and what's the best way to get things done. It's never about Policies, it's about culture. It's about the behavior you accept, the people you celebrate. A "9-5" policy means nothing if you feel vulnerable saying no to a meeting at 6pm. "A working from home is fine" policy means nothing if you think you're not in good favor and you feel left out. Ultimately there should be no policies, there should be culture of trust and a clear strategy, all all these other things immediately fill in. They've applied & been rejected for several good roles on Linkedin, they've not made any first rounds, and they think they are not good enough. Not by a long shot. Applications on here (for many) are a total waste of time. When we made it free and easy to apply for thousands of jobs, we also ensured that HR would use AI and clumsy tech to filter out all but the most boring risk free candidates. Brilliant people will always fail these. I would suggest the following. 1) Make a simple website with the specific ways you are extraordinary, in simple words. Show proof. 2)Think about roles you are genuinely perfect for. There will not be many. Be honest. 3) Never write to HR, only to a senior executive. In 100 words get their attention , interest and send on a link to your site. 4) Try to find companies who want to work around your brilliance, not around their limited imagination. It may not work, but it's a lot better than feeling depressed because a HR manager doesn't know how to recruit and it's far more likely to bring about good things. …see more

Feel like working from home is one of those shifts that has a tipping point. It's not being held back by tech but by culture, especially trust. We thought it was self driving cars that could sweep in and change the fabric of cities fast. It could just be someone in HR updating a policy in "Word", to say, "just do your job brilliantly, you know how to do that, we trust you, where you are and when you work is up to you" Culture is more interesting and powerful than tech, and the causal loops between them are most fascinating. …see more

I continue to be amazed by how many people managers still don't understand that today's workforce no longer responds to a “top down, I tell you what to do, you punch a clock for every task and I micro-manage your work and you'll like it” style of “leadership”. The culture and dynamics of people leadership have completely changed. It's now an equal partnership of supporting common goals and bringing people along. It's about showing people that they are not disposable objects, and that you genuinely care about them as human beings. It's about being transparent, genuine and kind. And most importantly, earning trust. Earning trust by not breaking your promises. By not being abrasive, crass, callous, vulgar, violent and rude. By not misleading or lying to your people, hiding things from them, or operating with alternate objectives and hidden agendas in mind. As more and more "new-school" leaders and companies emerge, the "old guard" of management drifts further into isolation and irrelevance. Learn to lead from a place of honesty, transparency, and kindness. From first principles. Or you'll find yourself "leading" shrinking teams, diminishing companies and eventually being replaced by someone who gets what leadership really means. #leadership #culture #management #dayone …see more

Pretty sure the entire recruitment process should change for the knowledge economy and the best roles within it.  1) Resume's or CV's are about the worst way to judge people. Would be way better to have personal websites where people could articulate what actually matters. Their values, skills and personality. Their hopes and dreams, faults and eccentricities. What they believe and evidence of all this. I'd love to see personal websites used by everyone.  2) The process is appears broken, seems to be designed not to get the best people fastest but to prove that people have worked hard and followed the right proceedure. 3)For understandable reasons, recruitment still focussed entirely on the gaps remaining and the suitability of people to fit them best. Not finding the very best people and accepting this may alter some of the interfaces around it. …see more

I'd like to make one thing really clear. Our fears on the data collected by large companies, speakers listening to us, "surveillance capitalism" and a whole tranche of the paranoid, is largely based on a complex million billion dollar ecosystem that doesn't know or care to know who we are, but is trying to sell us a more expensive and relevant shampoo, a new perfume we may like, to get us to enroll in an MBA etc. What's far more damaging about modern media is that the only way to make money in modern ad/click funded media is to stoke OUTRAGE. It's to create ever more compelling and simplistic narratives that feed envy, rage, jealousy, resentment, fear, or shock. Our animal like instincts are being biohacked. Our attention is weaponized. Pieces that moderate, articles that pay attention to facts, words which form bonds and bridge divides are unprofitable. This should be the greatest concern of the modern media environment and yet nobody seems to care. To pay for news with our sanity was the most expensive mistake we've ever made and explains a great deal of the modern societies' entrenchment, dividedness and high tension. …see more

As I progressed into management, I would do my best to not send emails off hours unless it was a "house on fire" emergency. I would also advise my staff of same, but I never had a really good way to truly police for exceptions and would, sometimes, inevitably randomize people unintentionally. This, until yesterday. Last week, I spoke with a recent grad who asked for advice on how to find "aha moments" in his career and life. My response was that you cannot map or prepare every step of your career to optimize for aha moments. Instead, aha moments come, go, and may reemerge just like opportunities. Instead of anticipating for aha moments, keep a curious and open mind on opportunities that come your way. Be surrounded by peers and mentors who can help identify these moments. Aha moments will come in different shapes and sizes, but also at different times. It's so so easy to start comparing ourselves to others then try to expedite our own timeline. While some competition is healthy and we should always act with a sense of urgency, never feel that need to fit and adhere yourselves to someone else's timeline. When employees start leaving your team, and managers complain about employees not having loyalty, other managers or companies "poaching" them, or making last-minute desperate counters with things they should have done long ago, it's time to fire those managers for not doing their jobs of building great teams and growing and empowering their people. People have choices, and employment at will cuts both ways. They will stay when their work is interesting, the pay is competitive, their work environment is healthy, and their manager is kind, understanding and knows how to grow their careers. They will leave when those things are not offered in their current job and find a job that does. They will leave toxic work environments even faster. So don't blame them. Take an honest look within, find what's broken, fix it, and hold the people that broke it accountable. It's that simple. #accountability #dobetter …see more

One reason why despite raising a lot of capital, some companies don’t make it is accelerating growth without identifying gaps in Product-Market Fit. 1. Meet customers in person - Ask the right questions to get the right answers. A most common mistake is to be swayed to believe that the customer is endorsing the answers that we want to hear. 2. Identifying what needs change - Should you change the product? Or should you change the target market? Change the price point? Or the customer experience? 3. Sadly I think this year has been the ultimate proof that we don’t take mental health remotely as seriously as we should. We’ve kept kids away from each other, told people to not to go outside, and to distrust and be distant from each other. We’ve injected endless zoom calls, social media and anxiety directly into our brains and to fill all aspects of our lives with algorithms optimized only to monetize endorphin rushes. We closed gyms and the world with zero thought for the moderation they provide. We’ve removed our ability to smile at strangers, communicate expressively or embrace each other. And all with seemingly zero regard for what this may to us, our kids, the vulnerable, the different. If mental health had physical symptoms, I wonder how different things would be. There was an article about "Zoom etiquette" posted here that, quite frankly, REALLY rubs me the wrong way. It calls out things like "must turn on camera", "being on time is already considered late (???)", etc. How about this: We're all at home, with kids, pets, background noises, trying to work, eat, sleep, and most of all, SURVIVE through a global pandemic. Worry less about "Zoom etiquette" and more about how your peers, co-workers and fellow humans are doing. Better yet, ask them. It will brighten their day, and yours. Instead of worrying about etiquette: embrace empathy, kindness and forgiveness for Zoom. If you don't feel like the world is ready to see you, for whatever reason, turn the camera off. If you have pets and kids in the background, we love to see them!! If there's noise, it's OK, we'll mute you and laugh about it :). For the record, I impress these exact same things to the folks in my organization. So please. Let's be kind and patient with each other during these unprecedented times. We're all trying, and not everyone is doing well. The last thing we need to do is hold people accountable for being 2 minutes late to a Zoom meeting, or some other silly thing. Studies show 70% of #startups have cash for less than 3 months. Here are my thoughts for startups on dealing with this new normal. - Look at all possible avenues to increase your runway to six months first. Buy yourself time. Then adopt strategies to generate recurring cashflow that can get you to a longer runway. - Also explore #strategicpartnerships and all M&A options on the table. Now is not the time to hold grudges. Look at old opportunities with fresh eyes and do what is best for your customers, employees and stakeholders. There is no shame in exploring an M&A. Make survival the most important goal and work forward from there. …see more

I hate being a slave. One might think: don’t be a jerk. You weren’t in chains in the 1800s. That was real slavery. OK, I hate arguing. Go away. But let’s take a look at the average person. The average person works at a job. Fine, you might say, a job is a lot different from slavery: I can take a water break for instance. And sometimes go to the bathroom. And when I talk to people the same sex as me there aren’t even any rules governing what I can say. Great. I agree. I'm getting a bit annoyed that nobody at LinkedIn knows what the site is supposed to be anymore. Which means people don't know how to behave on it. It's inevitably turning into a social network, where the site does all it can to garner interactions, to boost time spent, to sell ads. Yet at the same time recruit paid subscribers, aid networking and close connections. Make your mind up.

In Sweden there is an app where you can find out where anyone lives and what their direct phone number is. To be removed off the database takes special permission and explanation.   A few more clicks and anyone in the country can find out ANY other person's salary ( they do get told who has asked) It's interesting to compare this openness and transparency with say the German's, who seem to have the greatest fear of losing privacy. But most of all, being here for a few days, while Gun's rightly become the conversation in the USA, it's amazing to see one nation so open, trusting, tolerant, progressive, while another one fights for the right to be able to shoot hundreds of people dead in mins.  Hope is here, just not evenly distributed. …see more

It would be fun to rethink what a Facebook style app should be if it was launched today. I'd love a social network which is far more intimate. For perhaps 40 connections at most. For sharing things that matter, not broadcasting. For arranging real life gatherings more than substitutes for them. For discussing ideas not events. For listening and understanding more than displaying.

#Failure is not good. Failure is the worst thing possible. You feel sick. You feel like you’re going to die. You feel like if you don’t die you might kill yourself. There is absolutely nothing good about failure. And there’s nothing you can pretend to learn from failure. Lately, we’ve been living in the Golden Age of Failure Porn. Everyone wants to share their story. Everyone wants to “fail forward”. You can’t learn anything from failure because don’t forget that every single moment in your past has added up to that one moment in your present – where you are lying on the floor moaning your painful and abysmal failure. Stop whining. And stop using the word “failure”. Blah! Here are better things to learn from. Failure has many cousins. Learn from one of the cousins: Curiosity: When something happens and you don’t understand why, then ask, “Why?” Keep asking questions. Clearly, something confusing happened. Ask and ask and ask. After nearly 20 years in advertising, seeing countless quantitative presentations about "how people feel", "what people care about" , "how people will change", "what Millennials/Gen Z etc think" , I can only conclude that all of this research has been utterly useless. This is not new news, but people perform for surveys, they tick boxes that sound rather nice. Please can we look towards data on how people are actually behaving, how they've changed in the past, where they spend their money etc I'm sure right now "48.5% of people are thinking about moving home" , 38.3% are seeing "brands which care for the planet", 23.8% of people are "actively looking to spend more time meditating" or "will seek new ways to give back to each other". I'm sure 72.3% of people " want companies to act in ways which show mutual respect, forgiveness and foster understanding" And I can tell you now, it's all just people ticking a box on a form and hoping they are near the end of the survey and they can get back to buying some new reimagined pants on Instagram. …see more

You can take cotton and make fabric, wood and make furniture. You can’t turn steel into rubber, or wood into cotton. #Change in form is possible, but not in core properties. The same holds true in business as well. People don’t change much. Recognize the same patterns of behavior that make them successful or push them towards failure. There is a story about a person who went to a Zen master and requested him to teach him Zen. The master started pouring tea for his guest. Soon, the teacup was full, but he continued to pour. It started overflowing. The person told him, “Please stop pouring, don’t you see the cup is full?” The master smiled and said, “You are like the cup. You are already too full. You have to empty your cup before I can teach you Zen.” Sometimes you have to unlearn what you have learned to see the opportunity in a new light. So it is in the world of business. Business leaders and managers call such an approach by many names — ‘Zero-based budgeting’, where you don’t let the past dictate how to plan for the future; ‘Re-engineering’, where you fundamentally rethink and radically redesign the processes. I'm not calling for denial, but it's about time the Media turned to optimism. To some a large extent the World's economy works around confidence in our future, optimism and hope. An owner of retail spaces is more likely to let a retailer miss rental payments if they believe their business will bounce back, A small business owner can likely hang on longer if they can feel a sharp recovery happening soon and have been allowed to fall behind on rent . People are more likely to book a vacation if they feel their job is secure, people's jobs are secure when people spend money. Confidence in the future means stocks rise, bonuses flow, pensions are safeguarded, money is a flow. I'm not asking for propaganda or insensitivity to the loss of life, but every story is being spun in the most negative way possible & we're going to manufacture an era of hopelessness, destroyed futures for the young, all because negative stories earned a few more cents with terrible banner ads. It's time to see the ample positive data for what it is & get ready for a period of rapid rejuvenation. It is not disrespectful of those who have perished to kindle hope with balanced reporting. In the formative stages of a startup, hiring the right talent is among the most important things a founder will have to do. And it’ll be worth considering tapping into the skills and expertise of senior professionals while they are at it.  I am reminded of the book ‘Outliers’ by Malcolm Gladwell where he notes that 10,000 hours is the magic number for greatness. That you need to have practiced and to have apprenticed for at least 10,000 hours before you get good at a task. In fact, senior professionals and retirees come having incubated their skills and talent for much longer than that. And, therefore, they are worth more for their experience than what their age accredits them with. Whether you engage them full-time or part-time, as a consultant or as a part of the in-house team, it’s certainly a good idea for young founders enroll the expertise of someone who’s navigated the deep waters of a formal organization and can guide them in their journey to building one. Perhaps I am so much in favor of this because I am aging myself! Nevertheless, with average lifespan expected to improve in the years to come - 120 years as per some estimates - we have to start thinking about longer-term productivity measures and workforce inclusion. …see more

HARDCORE #CAREERADVICE FOR A 13 YEAR OLD: My daughter Mollie had a homework assignment where she had to ask me what I do for a living which put me in a weird position. I do a lot of things. I didn’t know how to tell her. But this assignment also shows that school is too focused on: EDUCATION leads to A JOB. This is not true anymore. The reality is: -The average person has 14 different careers in their lives. -The average multi-millionaire has seven different sources of income. So anything that is “one job focused” will create a generation of kids that will learn the hard way that life doesn’t work like that. The world changes fast. The jobs I do now didn’t exist when I was 13. And the jobs she will do don’t exist now. So learning how to learn is more important than memorizing facts. I've founded (and sold) two startup companies in my life. And one of my biggest takeaways? It's not exactly a fun job 😂 For as much hype and praise entrepreneurship gets, it's an incredibly stressful job that will leave you drained. And when it's not clear whose responsibility something is? Congratulations, it's yours! Now that I've moved into a role as an investor, I interact with a lot of startup founders and one thing I always tell them is that they really only have one job: prioritize. CEOs are professional prioritizers. Everything else is secondary. This brings me to the biggest issue I have with founders... They're sharp and capable of performing at a high-level, but they make no time in their day for their key responsibility of prioritizing. They are so busy responding to emails, Slack messages, and in Zoom waiting rooms, they don't make time to plan long term goals and scale their company. And so my advice to every founder is this: Make time to think. It is quite literally a competitive advantage. While other people are distracted, running from task to task, you'll be able to do the strategic thinking necessary to build a viable company. Are you a founder? If an planes engines cut out at 40,000ft most planes can glide easily for many miles, most with skilled pilots and a lot of work can land without casualties. That’s what this working from home era feels like. We’re all quick to point out it’s working , because so far few companies or people have failed. But you can’t take off this way, you can’t travel far this way, it takes a lot more work to make up for it. You can cope but you don’t design for this I accept for some companies based in software for example, it’s far far less of an issue, but most companies need trust, ideas, belonging, togetherness. Why delegate when I can do it faster myself? 🛑 That's the trap that a lot of entrepreneurs & creators fall into. In order to scale/grow/move onto bigger things you have to delegate. "In the long run you're not going to be able to do it faster yourself." - Jackie Hermes I was listening to Brittany Krystle Hoffman 's podcast with Sean Cannell and he spoke about how, even though it's a fabricated belief, most creators don't want to delegate because they feel that their style can't be replicated. Delegation may take a ton of time up front and things will go wrong, but in the end it's necessary and totally worth it. 2018 was a huge year for me in terms of business growth, personal growth, and delegation. While I admire your urgency, it's a bit too early ( by 20-50 days) to be writing your "this is how a post COVID19 world will be & this is what to do about it" deck. We're on the B of the Bang, trying waiting for the N. It's within the realms of possibility this fades oddly fast & these current altered times ( in many, not all) businesses will change little in terms of business dynamics, behaviors, cultures. It will clearly be a financial shock to many but not all. We will still buy toothpaste and phones. It could indeed be the start of a new normal, with societies making radical changes, and the whole mantra of "life never the same again". These are pretty widely spaced realities and for the moment we should probably just stay away from each other & focus on what matters. As cunning as it seems to put out your " Move to eCom" or "The children of 2025 won't go outside" decks now, perhaps wait a while. It's likely many of you will be shocked by how slowly things really change, we've all had transformative vacations only to stop Yoga and eat beef again 3 days after getting to a cold Gatwick Airport. …see more

A hero becomes a hero because he was called upon to do things outside the ordinary. Show bravery, or #compassion , or #persistence . Without significant effort and sacrifices, no one can become a hero. So the hero’s journey is not just a celebration. It is also filled with regrets and loss. Likewise, the #startup journey has many heroes and many legends that get created. How to keep our curiosity instinct up? 1. Expand the thinking from ‘What has been done’ to ‘What’s possible’. 2. Use first principles to reverse-engineer complicated problems and unleash creative possibility. 3. Deep dive into each topic. Ask ‘Why’ and more importantly ask, ‘Why not’. 4. Meet people and talk - your customers, employees, partners. Listen and ask questions, curb your urge to speak more. What does workplace culture entail? Free lunches, team outings and shout-outs at milestones often come to mind, but I believe there are many more intangible aspects to it. It is the value system that a CEO contributes to the company’s DNA which allows employees to distinguish between right and wrong, and do the right thing without being told. Compare United Airlines and Southwest Airlines, for example. In a complex, high-touch industry like aviation, both companies have experienced their fair share of potentially reputation-damaging incidents. But their responses to emergencies couldn't be more different. Southwest's sensitivity and customer-first approach as seen in the recent NYC-Dallas flight incident (read here: https://on.wsj.com/2IXGDq0 ) stands starkly at odds with the careless and insensitive damage control measures taken too often by United Airlines to list here. My advice to founders and CEOs of startups is to never underestimate the importance of company values and culture. Yes, it is important to focus on building a strong product, acquire and retain customers, hire the best talent and scale the business. But it is only fruitful when employees align with your company's value systems. Culture should be a CEO’s priority from day-1. https://lnkd.in/f22RXWZ …see more

Most boards don't have a Marketer on them. It's all very bizarre. Every company has ONE business purpose: to create a customer. The one department tasked with understanding customers is one of the least respected and under resourced. And I'm still baffled why we now have more and more data on customers, but this greater understanding of them is only used at the end of the manufacturing process to target ads and design propositions. The business vocabulary is replete with win-lose, the legacy of our war-based society. "Kill the competition"; "Take no prisoners” I never felt comfortable with this kind of language. For instance, when I was building my company in California, one of our most important competitors made a presentation at a conference. I went to the CEO and said, ‘Hey, that’s really fantastic.’ And since then, we have been cordial and had some great conversations. The way to solve for #competition is to focus on what your product does better and win through loyal customer base. Constantly focusing on how to kill competition and reacting to it can be detrimental to a company in the long run. Quite a lot of people think Blockchain will change everything and fast. I'm not sure it will. As an analogy, let's assume a new 3D house printing robot is developed, it can create houses in 1 day, for $20,000. We know this should revolutionize housing and real estate. You would however still have buy land, you'd have to establish planning permission. You'd need to furnish it. You'd likely need to work with real estate agents to buy it. It would be priced at market value, not what it cost to make. So you'd need the same mortgage brokers you have today, relying of hand filled in forms and reams of paperwork and proof. You'd still struggle to buy a home without a steady job or 3 years income.  You'd have an underlying core technology that is profoundly exciting and powerful, that should in theory change everything,  made antiquated by the human beings it interfaces with, the politics of regulation, worlds of bureaucracy that won't change fast because maybe they don't want change.  The same is likely true of Blockchain. It's rarely about the technology, it's about the interfaces. Most companies still haven't worked around the internet yet. …see more

Most Large companies want to act like smaller, startup style companies and not the legacy businesses they are. Old companies are like adults, they have deep expertise, clear wisdom, they know what they do well, but can't change easily,. They are slow, entrenched and don't embrace risk because they've too much to lose in fixed costs/commitment/reputation, and not long enough alive for change to pay off. If Adults pretend to be teenagers it looks immediately wrong. Wearing youth clothing, with teenage body language and lingo isn't going to fool anyone, or make any difference. If you're an Adult and you want a younger, risk taking, faster, more naive, version of yourself with a long future you don't pretend to be a child, you have kids. Perhaps creating a new entity, with the same formative ingredients, that can learn from you, but not be tethered to you, is precisely the right metaphor and actual plan for digital transformation. Consider the high-pressure world of sports — we expect athletes to perform under pressure. But no one can really perform at his or her best under pressure! Coaches help athletes understand how to create a mind bubble and not allow pressure to get to them on the field. Apply that same principle in a start-up, and follow that every day. Keep the pressure at bay and find the focus to do the best you can: a. Create a strong support group as a sounding-board for often tricky situations or problems. b. Is the potential growth investor aligned with the team & objectives of the company? - Early stage investors, typically tend to be ex-entreprenuers themselves, think on founder friendly terms, and can support a great degree of ambiguity from founders. You have top of the funnel, middle, bottom. Awareness all the way down to the conversion (or sale). Everything that is going on right now is top of the funnel. Protests, riots, videos sharing/showing experiences, etc. It’s bringing awareness to the problems that we are having. To the problems that have been there. A question that I would pose to the group is this… what does our funnel look like to bring about change? How do we convert? What is in the middle of the funnel? What is at the end? Because just like a business would never solely succeed from top of the funnel... lasting change will never happen if we only focus on the top of the funnel. Leadership, at the heart of it, is about inspiring greatness in others. It's about enabling others to reach their full potential. Empowering others to make confident decisions requires a leader to be, first, secure in their own strengths and vulnerabilities. Often the undoing of leaders is their inability to make space for others to emerge from the shadows of the organization. For a leader to succeed they need to scale, and to scale they need to delegate. Founders sometimes struggle with practicing delegation. I believe this is one of the most common issues why the potential of a start-up is not fully realized. Your competitor set may seem small, but consumers expectations are set by best in class of all categories. Don't benchmark against the people you expect to.

My annual reminder that customer service is a market investment to maximize not a logistics cost to minimize. We spend $600bn on advertising per year with the wonderful dream that one day someone wants to talk to a company. ...... and the moment they do , we consider it something to reply to most cheaply, not the magical moment when we get to engage in further marketing and seduction. It’s absolute insanity and brought to us by idiots in management consulting. …see more

I wish it was more widely understood that we need less choice of better things. This is the case in all directions. I don’t need Amazon to offer me 1000 SKU’s of TV, I need it to offer the 60 best ones. I don’t need Clubhouse to allow ever more people to make content, I need it to curate the best stuff. I don’t need Kayak to show me 1000 hotels, just 15 like Hotel Tonight, I don’t need to pick from 350 bizarrely named health insurance plans, just offer me 4 great ones. Since the dawn of time we’ve been wired for scarcity, we have long craved more, more was better. But now abundance is generally the problem. We need help navigating too many choices and too much complexity, not access to ever more options. We need more confidence in the decisions we make, not more decisions to make …see more

DON’T SAY “I DON’T HAVE TIME.” SAY, “IT’S NOT A PRIORITY.” This is more accurate language, says Fast Company writer Laura Vanderkam, author of I Know How She Does It. “I could tell you I don’t have time to train for a marathon, but that is not true; I just don’t want to! Using this language reminds me that time is a choice. If I’m not happy about the way I’m spending my time, I probably have the ability to change it,” asserts Vanderkam. When we've understood the power of "digital stuff" we won't be printing out airline boarding passes like in 2005, or have mobile boarding passes like 2015, we won't have passes at all. Tech will only be here when it vanishes. It means we stop digitizing old processes and metaphors and constructs of the analogue world, but we build around the new possibilities of what is now possible from scratch.

I believe in the impossible. That change, even at a mass level, only comes from the inside of each individual. That if each person tried to remain physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually healthy, then the country itself will rise to new heights never seen before in the civilization of man: a height without delusions, without fantasy notions of a "better life" that turn out to be just lies, without complicated mechanisms to control the masses and where mediocrity is not rewarded with power over the creators... http://bit.ly/2tpTlqc …see more

Should I or shouldn't I? Amazon's Jeff Bezos shares this piece of incredible advice on how to make the tough life decisions.  "And for me, the best way to think about it was to project myself forward to age 80 and say, “Look, when I’m 80 years old, I want to have minimized the number of regrets that I have... our biggest regrets, in most cases, you can murder somebody and okay, you’ll regret that, but in most cases our biggest regrets turn out to be acts of omission. It’s paths not taken and they haunt us. We wonder what would have happened. I loved that person and I never told them, and then they married somebody else. I didn’t do this, and so that’s the frame of mind that I put myself in and once I did that, and thought about it that way, it was immediately obvious to me. I knew that when I’m 80, I would never regret trying this thing that I was super excited about and it failing. If it failed, fine. I would be very proud of the fact when I’m 80 that I tried. And I also knew that it would always haunt me if I didn’t try. And so that would be a regret, it would be 100% chance of regret if I didn’t try and basically a 0% chance of regret if I tried and failed. So I think that’s a useful metric for any important life decision." …see more

It's likely that the very best people and the precise type of people you need most, are the hardest people to work with. And Vice Versa. As younger people enter the workforce, this is only going to become more apparent.  Pretty much all notions of work come from the command and control structure of armed forces centuries ago, tweaked for the needs of industrialists in factories 200 years ago. They needed people to be cogs in a machine, to be easily replaced, to be specialists, to be opinionless. Companies need to make the most of people, not the same of people. This means flexible working hours, working from home, embracing passions and side projects. It means people with width, and oddness, who can do 8 different things and need to.  We need to accept that literally the only thing that matters is outputs, not process or location, or presenteeism, or even how hard you worked. I'm not saying you need to employ hard people, far from it, I'm saying working with and around the best people will be hard. …see more

We created a department whose sole purpose is to extract value and enforce compliance, and put them in charge of an ecosystem built around formalized processes, sameness, common practices, and conformity. The result is the institutionalized mediocrity plaguing many legacy companies today. I often get asked when is the right time to make the first sales hire. I believe the founders are the best first salesperson of their product. A founder should make first sales hire when: 1. Early product-market fit is established 2. Proven customer value proposition and reference ability 3. A strong cohort of early customers 4. The process/playbook for a new salesperson to succeed is created 5. Create the right financial incentives (instant gratification) for experienced salespeople Getting the “salesperson persona” is extremely critical. At the early stage, it’s most important to solve for someone hands-on, used to ambiguity, can build & #design processes, and interpret product feedback. It's strange that we never really design any parts of our lives. Like we basically live on autopilot for 18-30 years, then look at all the things we've somehow accumulated, stuff, responsibilities, relationships and then try to move it around a bit, add a bit of fun between them. And at that point so many large things have been fixed, our ability to actually craft out the life we wanted is impossible and we'd never dared ask before what was important to us. Many assume we want to live in a house, that it should have a garden, that we should own it. Many assume we should have a single job, that's full time, that slowly pays more, that we do till the age of 60+, Many assume they want kids. And before we know it we've mortgages, commutes, fixed costs, fixed parameters. It's then pretty hard to alter things. Quite a lot of people plan their homes interiors, a lot of people plan their businesses, a lot of people plan holidays or gardens, but seems like very few people plan or design their lives. We just shuffle around things we assumed awe wanted an aggregated, often against ideas and societal expectations that come from an era of scarcity and vulnerability and bodies that wore out and education being scarce etc. Just an observation, it's not like I've done it. …see more

Thus every recruiter used rudimentary, objective & deeply boring and unimaginative ways to make the inbound numbers manageable. At the best using dull criteria like "degrees", at the worst filtering for words and then using stupid forms of AI. And they could never spend time getting back to unsuccessful candidates, let alone give feedback.
