I am currently reading this book ‘Range - Why generalists triumph in a specialized world’ and it brings a fresh perspective that being ‘Jack-of-all-trades’ does have merit. It is counterintuitive to what we all have been told since childhood - Pick a #career and specialize in it. In the world full of specialists, having dabbled in a range of work exposes one to different ideas and the ability to have diverse perspectives. In some sense, traditional companies always encouraged senior leadership roles to work in different departments to understand the business more holistically. A friend recently gifted me ‘The Infinite Game’ by Simon Sinek . As I continue reading it, I thought of sharing beautiful chunks from the first few pages. 1. In the Infinite Game of #Business , we may not know all of the other players, and new ones can join the game at any time. 2. To one company, being number one may be based on the number of customers they serve. To another, it could be about revenues, stock performance… In infinite games, there are multiple metrics, which is why we can never declare a winner. 3. The game of business has no finish line. Despite the fact that companies are playing in a game that cannot be won, too many business #leaders keep playing as if they can. 4. The popularity of both our recently published studies about the use of artificial intelligence in the future of healthcare proves that it's high time for everyone to know at least the basics of A.I., especially working in medicine and healthcare. If you ever wonder where to start, here are three books that heavily impacted how I see A.I. 1) Human Compatible by Stuart Russels provided the perfect context and historical background to understand where A.I. is coming from. 2) You Look Like a Thing and I Love You by Janelle Shane showed me what A.I. is really capable of today (and what it is not). 3) Superintelligence by Nick Bostrom gave a glimpse into the far future of A.I. and described where it is heading. Many of the loans that had been restructured following the Lehman collapse continued to haunt them but they were in a denial mode till Raghuram Rajan drove the first of its kind asset quality review, or AQR, for these banks. An A.I.’s been put to use to predict breast cancer during a time when women skip their examinations due to fear of contracting the virus. “Lehman says the AI approach has helped identify a number of women who, when persuaded to come in for routine screening, turn out to have early signs of cancer. I wrote Hooked to expose the ways companies like Facebook and Twitter have used habit-forming products to build tech empires. ...but I didn’t write the book for them 🤔 I wrote Hooked for people like you! In truth, the techniques I broke down in Hooked were no secret to those giants tech companies. They've known about how to build habit-forming products for years and they've used that knowledge to keep us liking, scrolling, and engaged. My goal with Hooked was to take those techniques and democratize them. I wanted to show everybody the psychology at work and make that knowledge accessible to all. It should NOT just be the Silicon Valley giants who can build habits in people’s lives. Former Reserve Bank of India governor YV Reddy could save the banking system from the impact of Lehman collapse but India’s microfinance industry—which had been growing at a breakneck speed—got almost wiped out. The event came to pass when the promulgation of a state law in Andhra Pradesh, the hotbed of microfinance, put severe restrictions on its activities. In 2010, SKS Microfinance Ltd got itself listed on the bourses, the second microfinance entity globally to do so after Banco Compartamos in Mexico in 2007, but months after that the Andhra Pradesh law nearly killed SKS and many others. If you want to know what exactly happened in India’s growing microfinance industry, read ‘From Lehman to Demonetization’. The book dissects the crisis triggered by the Andhra Pradesh law, the industry’s journey through hell and back, and its display of maturity and resilience. Writing my book, Hooked (link in comments!) took years of research and immersion in the subject material. During the Fall 2012 semester, Dr. Baba Shiv and I designed and taught a class at the Stanford Graduate School of Business on the science of influencing human behavior. The following year, I partnered with Dr. Stephanie Habif to teach a similar course at the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design. These years of concerted research and real-world experience resulted in the creation of the Hooked Model: a four-phase process companies used to form habits. Through consecutive Hooked cycles, habit-forming products reach their ultimate goal of user engagement that is self-activated, promoting repeat usage without depending on costly advertising or spammy messaging. While I draw many examples from technology companies given my industry background, habit-forming products are everywhere—in apps, sports, movies, games, and even our jobs. My last book recommendation for 2020: Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain . The book describes how the 20th century was for the good-looking extroverts, the ‘sales’ types of people. Whereas the 21st century is all about the introverts: the Bill Gateses and Elon Musks, the Big Bang Theory genius geeks. However, the future is for “the mix”. It made me note both the introvert and extrovert personality traits I have: I’m very introvert in my life, in disliking social events, when I’m immersed in reading, even when driving a car (no radio or podcast on, just complete silence). Whereas I also feel amazing when giving a keynote to 1,000 people. Without going too much into the scientific reasoning behind this (read the book for more details!) What's important is that we should do our best to balance our introvert and extrovert personality traits to make them collaborate rather than conflict with each other. Have you read this book? In my book, Indistractable, I discuss how we can use tech to "hack back" external triggers caused by tech. Here's a great example I use every day: RoboKiller! This app nearly eliminated the annoying telemarketer calls I used to receive. It's also hilarious! When a telemarketer calls your phone, the system plays a recorded message to waste as much of their time as possible so they take you off their list. It also records the call for your enjoyment. Janelle Shane did a wonderful job with ""You Look Like a Thing and I Love You"". I loved every page of it. I picked this up because I know Neal Schaffer is a world-renowned expert on #LinkedIn and I was interested in finding out how to apply influencer marketing strategies on LinkedIn (since they've been already been widely accepted and leveraged on Instagram). More than sixty years ago, mathematician-philosopher Norbert Wiener published a book on the place of machines in society that ended with a warning: "we shall never receive the right answers to our questions unless we ask the right questions".
