Tom GoodwinThis is how the various Crypto Pyramid Schemes work. If you've a degree of influence or some credibility: 1)Buy your Coin of choice. 2)Pump it as much as you can. Leverage the power of today's media that loves articles that look fantastical and drive clicks. 3)Make outlandish predictions about it's growth. 4)Recruit others, They hear this & buy in ( so the price goes up) 5)You now have an army of people who will now pump & hype the currency for you and passionately so, after all they have skin in the game. 6)By now you have a good growth history and trajectory. 7)You celebrate those who you recruited earlier to "predict the growth" which now means the world thinks those people somehow objectively can see the future or knew more. 8) People now listen to those "gurus" , and thus their predictions inherently drive growth. And here's the thing. Since all assets prices are set by trust and confidence, the currency could create its own sustainable value & everyone is exonerated and smug. Or probably 99% of the time the whole thing crashes. But I promise you this. 99.9999999% of the people promoting these things are people who own this stuff and are pumping it irrationally to create their own wealth. The more outrageous the headline the better. That’s why this is dangerous. …see more

James AltucherInterview with Charlie Hoehn : "THE OPPOSITE OF PLAY ISN'T WORK, IT'S DEPRESSION." There’s a strong evolutionary component to play. Our bodies were built to hunt and gather and move. Humans aren’t meant to stay still. “The research is pretty clear. They have done experiments. They’ve deprive animals of play—they give them love, nurturing, food, shelter, all the things they need to survive— but they deprive them of play, the animal inevitably grows up to be socially and emotionally crippled," Charlie said. Charlie calls it “chronic-play deprivation.” And I think many people suffer from that. It’s the transition from childhood to adulthood. Statistically, children laugh an average of 300 times a day. But adults laugh an average of 3-5 times a day. Charlie said he was approaching life “so seriously and joylessly. And very much in terms of what’s the output, what’s the income, what’s the money pay-off.” What’s the pay-off? I had to repeat that line. Since there never was a pay-off. It’s always a false promise society wants us to believe. So I asked, “How did you learn to play again?” THREE STEPS TO PLAY STEP #1: http://bit.ly/2tK3wFK …see more

When my book, The Guide to the Future of Medicine came out, I released an infographic about the 40 trends of digital health. I wanted to visualize the trends and innovations that shape the future of medicine from 3 perspectives: - Which stage of the delivery of healthcare and the practice of medicine is affected by that (Prevent & Prepare; Data Input & Diagnostics; Therapy & Follow-up; and Outcomes & Consequences); - Whether it affects patients or healthcare professionals; - The practicability of it (already available – green boxes; in progress – orange boxes; and still needs time – red boxes) The infographic represents the way I see the development of key trends and innovations in the process of delivering healthcare. Bertalan Meskó, MD, PhDResearchers at the University of Tübingen tried to train an A.I. to learn to identify a specific fish called tench on pictures. When they looked into the A.I. to see how it tries to identify that fish, they found out that the #AI was looking for human fingers against a green background as most of the tench photos in the training data featured a fisherman holding the fish in their hands after catching it. Can you imagine how useful it would be in medicine to point out such things before an algorithm is developed? This way, we could avoid so many false negatives, false positives and bias built into the algorithms. For example, radiologists looked at the ChestXray14 dataset of X-ray images and discovered that many of the images of patients with pneumothorax had a chest drain on the image as treatment already started when doing the X-ray. A #MachineLearning algorithm tasked with identifying X-rays of pneumothorax would probably look for the drain in the images as a perfect sign of the condition (they have to perform as well as humans would do, not learn to diagnose the condition), this way, missing patients with the condition who have not been treated yet. Can you think of an example in your practice (medical or not) where such subtle observations exist? …see more

James AltucherSOME THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT STUDENT LOAN DEBT - 44 MILLION Americans are in student loan debt. - There is $1.5 TRILLION in student debt., up from $200 billion in 2004. - Income for people ages 18-35 have gone DOWN since 1992. - At age 18, you can BORROW $200,000 but you can't drink a beer. - Student loan debt is the ONE debt that doesn't go away in a bankruptcy. The government WILL go after you. - Because of this, college tuitions have gone up TEN TIMES FASTER than inflation since 1977 (healthcare has gone up 3x faster). - 50% of students have student loans. Up from 15% in 1989. - The president of Quinnipiac College (where?) makes $3.5 million in salary (I just use this as an example to show where these rising tuitions are going). This has led to rising income inequality, less young entrepreneurs and innovation. Solutions: - relief of student loan debt so America remains in the lead of innovation. - Accreditation of online universities: increasing supply will reduce price. - system where investors can "buy" 10% of future income. Moving funding into the private sector. - spread awareness of companies that do not require a degree: Examples: Google, Hilton, Apple, IBM, Bank of America, Ernst & Young, etc. don't require a degree. #college #success …see more

Nir EyalTo understand Fortnite’s staying power with players, it’s important to understand the game’s Hooked Model. In my book, I describe Hooks as “experiences designed to connect the user’s problem with the company’s product with enough frequency to form a habit.” Here are the five steps of the Hooked Model: -External Trigger: Prompts us to action and tell us what to do next (invites to join friends in the game) -Internal Trigger: feelings we seek to escape (boredom, seeking connection) -Action: the simplest behavior is done in anticipation of a reward (accepting that invite) -Reward: relief from the “itch” of the trigger (variability within the game) -Investment: what the user puts into the product to improve with use ( customization and personalizations) Fortnite’s amazing success is no accident. #Fortnite #Hooked #InternalTrigger …see more

Nir EyalHow do we create habit-forming products? First, start by understanding what drives our actions. Dr. BJ Fogg at Stanford University developed a model showing that in order to initiate any and all behaviors, a product needs three things: 1. The user must have sufficient motivation: Why are they using the product? 2. The user must have the ability to complete the desired action: How easy is it to use the product? 3. A trigger must be present to activate the behavior: Is there a clear call to action? The Fogg Behavior Model tells us that if any component of this formula is missing or inadequate. #Hooked #ProductDesign #UX #HabitFormation …see more

Justin BarisoA few years ago, Google went on a mission: Discover how to build the perfect team. The study was code-named "Project Aristotle," a tribute to the famous philosopher's belief that it's possible to have a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. . After poring through the data, the researchers clearly ranked one factor as most important: Psychological safety. Google describes it this way: "In a team with high psychological safety, teammates feel safe to take risks around their team members. They feel confident that no one on the team will embarrass or punish anyone else for admitting a mistake, asking a question, or offering a new idea." In other words, Google discovered that for teams to work well together, team members must feel comfortable enough to be themselves. Then, and only then, can they contribute to their full potential. How can you apply these learnings to your workplace? It's already a buzzword. But how do you know which of the digital health breakthroughs have a historical significance beyond the daily hype? Because digital health leads to way more than exciting gadgets and high-end wellness services. Digital health is a cultural transformation and since the day I started focusing my research on that, I've known that this transformation would be a great challenge. So, we thought that showing a timeline of the major milestones that led us here might help you get a clear picture about where digital health stems from and where it is going. It gives you context about the major innovations. It shows events that have a historical effect not only on digital health, but also bring about the cultural transformation we all look forward to. Nir EyalThe last step to becoming indistractable is to prevent distraction with pacts. Pacts are decisions we cement well in advance of the temptations we know might come and there are three types that can help us stay productive: effort pacts, price pacts, and identity pacts. Effort pacts are precommitments that involve increasing the amount of effort required to do something you don’t want to do. Adding additional friction forces you to ask if a distraction is really worth the extra effort. Price pacts put money on the line to help you stay productive. If you stick to your intended behavior, you keep the cash. If you get distracted, you forfeit your funds. The most powerful of all these pacts, though, is the identity pact. Your self-image has a profound impact on your behavior. By taking on a new identity, you empower yourself to make decisions based on who you believe you are. If you tell yourself you are the kind of person who is easily distracted, it becomes true. However, if you believe that you are indistractable, you empower yourself to respond healthily to whatever distractions get in your way. You aren’t somebody with a “short attention span” or an “addictive personality.” You’re indistractable! #Indistractable #BehaviorChange #Pacts …see more

Bertalan Meskó, MD, PhDI just came across a great paper describing the difference between anonymization vs pseudonymization. Both represent important methods for protecting the privacy of patients whose data take part in studies and are analyzed by artificial intelligence. Currently, these are the most widely used privacy preservation techniques for medical datasets: 1) Anonymization is the removal of private data from a medical record. Simply, they delete parts of data such as name, gender or age. 2) Pseudonymization is the replacement of sensitive entries with artificially generated ones. They simply replace data such as name, gender or age with synthetic ones. It's harder than it sounds. Interestingly, the paper concludes that "De-identification by naive anonymization or pseudonymization alone must therefore be viewed as a technically insufficient measure against identity inference." But authors don't leave us in the dark, but recommend techniques that can indeed enhance patients' privacy. Nir EyalDistraction is dangerous. Perception mistakes caused by healthcare practitioners while working in hospitals, injure hundreds of thousands of Americans annually. A group of nurses at the University of California, San Francisco wanted to figure out why this was happening. Here’s what they found 👇 The reason people were being given the wrong medication was because nurses were distracted. Seriously! When nurses were dosing out medication for patients, they were interrupted, on average, ten times per dosing round. These constant interruptions were the source of avoidable mistakes. So, how did they address this? They didn’t need to spend millions on a new program or technology. Nurses wore cheap plastic vests that read, “drug round in progress. Do not disturb.” Mistakes dropped by 88%. Whether it’s finishing a project for work or dosing out life-saving medicine, we cannot do our best work when we’re constantly being interrupted. Do you sometimes feel like a nurse constantly interrupted and distracted? How do you block out distractions? Bertalan Meskó, MD, PhDI hear more and more about Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) while learning about artificial intelligence but I haven't been able to comprehend it properly. Now I just heard a good analogue and I thought I would share it with you. There is a painter who wants to create better and better fake Picasso paintings and a policeman who wants to spot these fakes with an increasing efficiency. What happens is that the painter keeps getting better at making fakes, while the policeman keeps getting better at detecting those. The two models keep trying to beat each other and after many iterations, the painter creates images indistinguishable from a real Picasso. This was the goal of the whole GAN. It's crucial in medicine where privacy concerns limit the amount of available data because GANs can fill in the missing data, making it possible to produce entirely fabricated patient datasets that are just as useful for training AI as the real thing. #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #AI #artificialintelligence #chess #deeplearning #machinelearning #TMFchessjourney …see more

Nir EyalAn important part of building a habit-forming product is finding the right reward mechanic. In May 2007 a Q&A website named Mahalo utilized a special incentive to get users to ask and answer questions: Money. People who submitted a question offered a bounty in the form of a virtual currency, the best response received the bounty, and could be exchanged for real money. At its high point, 14.1 million users visited the site monthly. But over time, users began to lose interest. As Mahalo struggled to retain users, another Q&A site began to boom: Quora . Unlike Mahalo, Quora didn’t offer money as a reward. So why have users remained highly engaged with Quora? Because people did not want to use a Q&A site to make money. Quora instituted an upvoting system that reports user satisfaction with answers and provides a steady stream of social feedback. Quora’s social rewards have proven more attractive than Mahalo’s monetary rewards. Only by understanding what truly matters to users can a company correctly match the right reward to their intended behavior. #Hooked …see more

Bertalan Meskó, MD, PhDWill digital technologies replace physicians? No. But do check out my infographic on how different medical professions will be impacted by automation! I created it by looking at the top 20 medical specialties and the impact of automation on them. On one axis, I differentiate between more repetitive and more creative types of medical professions. E.g. dermatology versus internal medicine. On the other, I sort them out based on whether they’re more interaction-based or data-based. E.g. psychiatry versus radiology. I then inserted the different professions into this matrix and checked what kind of future awaits each. Naturally, they all get impacted differently, and here I’m focusing on the impact and not the categories. Inserting these professions into the matrix was my subjective choice. Feel free to challenge me, I’m happy to update the infographic! Full size image here: https://lnkd.in/ehU_rn8 #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology …see more

According to historic research there are six basic emotions: anger, fear, surprise, disgust, happiness and sadness but new research suggests that there are at least 27 distinct emotions—and they are intimately connected with each other. In contrast to the notion that each emotional state is an island, the study found that “there are smooth gradients of emotion between, say, awe and peacefulness, horror and sadness, and amusement and adoration. In general, people can be very bad at recognizing the emotions of themselves and others, which in turn leads to a lot of misunderstandings and missteps. Amy BlaschkaIn the workplace, effectively communicating authentic appreciation and encouragement isn’t one-size-fits-all, nor is it restricted to a single language of appreciation. The best way to express your gratitude in the workplace starts with asking others their preferences so you can better relate to one another and deepen your relationships. There are five languages of workplace #appreciation : Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Acts of Service, Tangible Gifts, and Appropriate Physical Touch. This week, let’s breakdown how to effectively communicate using them, actions you can take to support each style, and things to avoid. #1: WORDS OF AFFIRMATION 💬 How To Communicate As this language’s name suggests, use words to affirm, encourage, and appreciate people. Employ empathy to understand your colleagues better and actively listen to them to signal your interest. Actions To Take Provide verbal praise in front of others—in a team meeting or when you’re with customers, for instance. Regularly send unexpected messages, emails, or texts of encouragement to foster closer work relationships. Things To Avoid Offering non-constructive criticism or failing to recognize your workmates’ efforts, which will leave others feeling frustrated and unappreciated. #leadership #communication …see more

Amy BlaschkaScience tells us that there is a way to make progress that doesn’t involve a tremendous amount of time or effort—and is more likely to stick. The trick? Think small. Or, more specifically, “micro.” “Microsteps”—a term coined by Arianna Huffington , Thrive Global founder & CEO—are small, incremental, science-backed actions we can take that will have both immediate and long-lasting benefits to the way we live our lives. This is confirmed by science and habit change experts, who advise people to start small and cultivate an environment where doing the right thing is as easy as possible. To create a new habit, simplify the behavior down to its tiniest essence. Doing this ensures that the habit will be easy to do, which means you’ll be more likely to continue it. This creates small wins, personal victories that are deeply satisfying and worth celebrating. Because people change best by feeling good, not by feeling bad, you’ll continue to seek out the reward of that new behavior and create a virtuous cycle of growth. And that’s worth going micro. #leadership #change #progress …see more

Bertalan Meskó, MD, PhDIn his book, AI Superpowers, Kai-Fu Lee shares his personal story with cancer. Many physicians complain today about how hard it is to deal with patients who uses Google to learn about their diagnoses. This is why we released a free guide for them ( http://bit.ly/2CeLRsR ). I wonder what my peers will complain about when patients start using artificial intelligence-based tools that are available online. An excerpt from the book: "The fact that my lymphoma had affacted over twenty sites, had spread above and below my diaphragm, and had entered an organ outside the lymphatic system meant that I was automatically categorized as a stage IV patient. But what I didn't know at the time of diagnosis was that this crude method of staging has more to do with what medical students can memorize than what modern medicine can cure. Nir EyalSelf-improvement apps like Remente often go beyond screen-level engagement with their users. These apps persuade people to take real actions beyond the technology that shape their long-term behaviors. Companies worldwide are leveraging behavioral insights into apps like these to bridge the intention-action gap. By doing so, they are helping people get closer to their ideal "future selves." But how? Here's how: -The first session of usage is designed to be a success. If we are not exposed to benefits during our very first experience, we will likely discontinue usage. -The next session is planned for. If retention-driving triggers are not set up initially, users will be less likely to return a second time, much less engage in real behavior change. -The benefits are tangible. What's challenging is that these benefits often take months to realize, but the better apps offer rewards as soon as Day 1. -They encourage (and reward) continued usage - aka maintenance of the behavior. -They acknowledge that the path isn't linear. Instead, progress is framed as a series of steps. Share some great self-improvement apps you have used in the comments below! #Hooked #Indistractible #BehaviorChange #SelfImprovement …see more

Justin BarisoEmotional intelligence begins with self-awareness. We often go through life reacting, never taking the time to think about how or why we respond the way we do. This limits the control we have over our actions and tendencies. One of the best ways to develop self-awareness is to ask the right questions. Doing so can broaden your perspective and help you see yourself through the eyes of others. Here are some questions you can ask yourself (or others): • In what situations do I find that emotions work against me? •How would I (or you) describe my communication style? Am I direct? Brash? Clear? Ambiguous? Subtle? Tactful? How would others describe my communication style? • How does my current mood affect my thoughts and decision-making? • Am I open to other perspectives? Am I too easily swayed by others? • What traits in others bother me? Why? • Do I find it difficult to admit when I’m wrong? Why or why not? The goal isn't to comprehensively answer all of these questions in one day. Rather, it’s to cultivate a learning mindset. Stick by your convictions: When the first palm device failed, the team knew that they were on the right path and very close to success. They decided to believe in themselves and try again 2. Focus on user feedback: The team realized that business users just wanted a Palm device to seamlessly sync and work as an extension of the computer, not an independent device as it was originally designed to be. 3. It was also expected that oncology, pathology and radiology stand out when it comes to using A.I. methods in medicine. However, I was surprised to see so many studies in psychiatry, surgery and neurology while you don't see discussions, news and announcements about those developments often. At the same time, it seems that cardiology, ophthalmology and dermatology, the specialties with the most exciting news and developments seem to be underrepresented. The explanation could lie in the method I used to mine the database but it's still interesting. Chantel SoumisAlthough today is the shortest day of the year, it is celebrated differently across the globe ❄ Here's how👇 Saturnalia: This celebration dedicated to Saturn, the god of agriculture and time. During this jolliest and most popular of festivals, social norms fell away as everyone indulged in gambling, drinking, feasting, and giving gifts! ❄ Dong Zhi (which means “Winter Arrives”): The Chinese celebration of the winter solstice, welcomes the return of longer days and the corresponding increase in positive energy in the year to come. ❄ Toji: In Japan, the winter solstice is less a festival than a traditional practice centered around starting the new year with health and good luck. ❄ St. Lucia's Day: This traditional festival of lights in Scandinavia honors one of the earliest Christian martyrs, incorporated with earlier Norse solstice traditions. ❄ Zuni - Shalako: Celebrated by Native American Pueblo peoples in western New Mexico, the winter solstice signifies the beginning of the year, and is marked with a ceremonial dance called Shalako. ❄ HOW WILL YOU CELEBRATE?! ❄❄❄ No matter how you choose to celebrate, cheers to happy beginnings! Bertalan Meskó, MD, PhDI keep on geting questions about the accuracy of smartphone apps for heartrate measurement. There are smartphone apps that promise to tell you your heartrate if you put your finger on the camera near the flashlight. The simple conclusion I can share after testing a lot is that well-designed devices are much more accurate than these apps. Even studies showed that their accuracy is questionable. The apps have an error rate of about 5-15% that doesn't sound much but it's basically saying that the heartrate you measure with these apps is far from being precise and, more importantly, far from being a reliable vital sign you can base decisions on. James AltucherTHE ABSOLUTE BASICS OF WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT# BITCOIN WITHOUT KNOWING ANYTHING ABOUT TECHNOLOGY. Too many people act like "tech snobs" when talking about Bitcoin. I honestly hate talking about this topic. Because the key to success is what I always say: Physical Emotional Creative Spiritual Health. I only know that because when I've been on the floor and in pain (bad business, bad breakup, bad breath, bad everything), these four things have been the only thing that have helped. When at bottom, all of this is BS: Not knowing what stock to pick. Or what "crypto" to pick. Or what conversation topic would be hot at a cocktail party. Or even having money in the bank. Nothing would help except those four areas of health. That saved my life. One day, one week without all four being checked off each day, and my life slips. I don't want my life to slip. I want it to compound every. Please let me stay disciplined and be good and be helpful. BUT...so many people asking me now about Bitcoin. So many scams out there. So many people proud of their "tech jargon" that actually know nothing about Bitcoin or why it's important. Just read this. Then do what you want. This is an answer I made on Quora. #3: ACTS OF SERVICE 🛠 How To Communicate With this language, actions speak louder than words. Actions To Take Help alleviate a colleague’s workload by offering your assistance, and then perform the service in a way the recipient wants it done. Nir EyalWhat’s the difference between addiction and overuse? The majority of the time we’re discussing tech “addiction”, we’re actually describing overuse Addiction is a pathology. It’s defined as a persistent compulsive dependency on a behavior or substance that harms the user. It’s something that’s incredibly hard to stop. Addiction has three components: - It requires a person with a predilection for addiction - It requires the product - It requires pain that the user cannot cope with in a healthier manner It’s only in the confluence of these three things that addiction occurs. If one of these three factors is missing, addictions don’t form. Understanding the difference is important because when we throw these terms around so loosely, they become meaningless. It’s disrespectful to people actually suffering from addiction and it disempowers people who pathologize a problem they could do something about if they tried. Part of what determines our ability to change our behavior is whether or not we believe we can. When we claim that we’re “addicted” to something when we’re not, we give that thing too much power over us. Let’s put things in perspective so we can fight back at distraction. #Indistractable #BehaviorChange #GrowthMindset …see more

Justin BarisoWhat is empathy? We can actually split the quality into three categories: cognitive, emotional, and compassionate. To illustrate, imagine that a friend has recently lost a close family member. It begins with cognitive empathy: an attempt to imagine what the person is going through. Who did they lose? Besides feelings of pain and loss, how will their life now change? Emotional empathy helps you go further, to actually share your friend's feelings. You try to connect with the feeling of deep sorrow and emotional pain. Compassionate empathy moves you to take action. You might: -provide a meal, so your friend doesn’t need to worry about cooking -offer to help make necessary phone calls or do some chores -come over to help keep them company; or, if they need to be alone, pick up the children and watch them for a while This is just one example, but every day will bring new opportunities to develop empathy. In fact, every interaction you share with another person is a chance to see things from a different perspective, to share their feelings, and to help. Justin BarisoWe hear a lot about the "need for empathy." But what is empathy, exactly? Psychologists Daniel Goleman and Paul Ekman break down the concept into the following three categories. COGNITIVE EMPATHY is the ability to understand how a person feels and what they might be thinking. Cognitive empathy makes us better communicators, because it helps us relay information in a way that best reaches the other person. EMOTIONAL EMPATHY (also known as affective empathy) is the ability to share the feelings of another person. Some have described it as “your pain in my heart.” This type of empathy helps you build emotional connections with others. COMPASSIONATE EMPATHY (also known as empathic concern) goes beyond simply understanding others and sharing their feelings: it actually moves us to take action, to help however we can. But what does real-life empathy look like? And how can we develop it? Chantel SoumisStress Control: Your Body Has a Budget & Overdrafting Makes You Sick! Scientists have found that the brain uses incoming sensory information to estimate the body’s state and anticipate what will happen next. If a demanding situation is predicted, the brain marshals the body’s resources (changing blood pressure, secreting hormones, metabolizing glucose) to begin to meet those needs before they arise. It could explain why people who experience high levels of stress due to trauma, financial hardship, divorce, or racism, also have higher rates of diseases. “Just like companies that have a financial office to keep track of accounts and make sure that their overall budget is balanced, your brain manages the budget for all the accounts in your body, keeping track of water, salt, glucose, and other resources that keep a person alive and well... Like a financial budget, a body budget can run a deficit, and over the long term, a bankrupt body budget results in illness.” Dysfunctions and degeneration in this network are not just linked to depression and Alzheimer’s disease but to many other illnesses such as diabetes, as well as chronic stress, obesity, and addiction. …see more

Justin BarisoEach of the four abilities of emotional intelligence: -self awareness -self management -social awareness -relationship management …is interconnected and naturally complements the others; however, one isn’t always dependent on another. You’ll naturally excel at certain aspects of the four abilities and display weaknesses in others. For example, you may be great at perceiving your own emotions, yet you struggle to manage those feelings. Or, consider the trait of social awareness. The ability to anticipate and understand the feelings of others can help you avoid creating unnecessary offense, a skill that makes you more likable and draws others to you. But that same attribute can become a weakness if it inhibits your ability to speak up when you should or stops you from giving critical (yet helpful) feedback for fear of how others will react. High social awareness is therefore most effective when it is balanced w/ the other three abilities. Want to know how? Make sure to hit the follow button. I also discuss what it would mean for us and how different it will be going back to our life which is not going to be the same. Also, a few interesting news and developments. Reporters at STAT News tested several chatbots that were specifically designed for answering patients' questions whether they have the coronavirus and the results varied greatly. With the same symptoms, they got different results such as there is probably no risk and start at-home quarantine immediately. There are A.I.-based technologies that could make contact tracing much faster (it usually takes days) and could send a warning to people's phones who have been in the proximity of a patient who was just testedt positive. While it would significantly help the fight against the pandemic, it would also be a privvacy nightmare. Justin BarisoThe 4th and final facet of emotional intelligence is RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT. Relationship management is the ability to get the most out of your connections with others. It includes the ability to influence through your communication and behavior. Instead of trying to force others into action, you use insight and persuasion to motivate them to act on their own accord. Relationship management also involves bringing emotional benefits to others. Doing so gradually increases the level of trust and strengthens the bond between you and your partners. Turns out a lot of us across the world don’t eat enough whole grains, beans, nuts and produce and this can harm our health. Do you have or are you worried about high blood pressure? Diabetes? Cancer? Well the good news is that just three changes to your diet can help improve your odds of staying healthy: cutting red meat and sugar consumption in half and upping intake of fruits, vegetables and nuts. Selected Excerpt: “One in five deaths globally -- that's about 11 million people -- in 2017 occurred because of too much sodium and a lack of whole grains, fruit and nuts and seeds, the study found, rather than from diets packed with trans fats, sugar-sweetened drinks and high levels of red and processed meats. “ …see more

Julie KligerYour Prescription Medicine Might Be Harming More Than Healing—Off-Label Prescrbing. What’s on-label versus off-label use of medicines? It’s when a drug is prescribed for other reasons than what it’s ‘officially’ made for. “Off-label" means the medication is being used in a manner not specified in the FDA's approved packaging label, or insert. Every prescription drug marketed in the U.S. carries an individual, FDA-approved label. Selected Excerpts: The F.D.A. had data showing that so-called off-label prescribing was widespread. But officials did little to intervene... ...The F.D.A. established a distribution oversight program in 2011 to curb inappropriate use of the dangerous medications, but entrusted enforcement to a group of pharmaceutical companies that make and sell the drugs.. ...pharmaceutical companies “actively subverting” the oversight and safety process... ...the pharmaceutical company pleaded guilty and paid more than $600 million in fines related to misleading marketing... ..drug companies have faced legal action for falsely advertising medications and have paid over $400 million in fines... “It is not open for debate that the risk of these drugs among patients is unacceptably high. It’s quite clear-cut,” said Dr. Alexander, at Johns Hopkins University. …see more

Julie KligerFind it Hard to Concentrate at Work? Maybe You Are Neurodivergent. Ever wondered why its so hard to concentrate at work? Two reasons: firstly, cubicles and open spaces are noisy, distracting and communal-encouraging “drop-in” meetings and interruptions. And secondly because not everyone is ‘wired’ to handle so much chatter and unpredictability. Neurodivergence describes the variations in the ways our brains function, and encompasses people on the autism spectrum and people with ADHD or dyslexia. The term has been expanding to include those with anxiety, depression, OCD, and PTSD—anything that makes a person think a bit differently. And this can make typical work spaces and work flow challenging. However there are adjustments in a work setting that can be made, include allowing more time working from home, adjusting neurodivergent workers start time and end time. Allowing for this flexibility in scheduling and letting people do what they need to do to cope with noise or environment—without judgement. Selected Excerpt: “Around 50 to 75 percent of autistic people with higher education are unemployed. The unemployment rate for people receiving public mental health services is approximately 80 percent.” …see more

Justin BarisoHave you ever felt that you're an unwilling slave to your emotions? As if you've been programmed to react a certain way to a specific set of circumstances, and there's simply nothing you can do about it? One of the reasons we react in a certain way is that we're wired to respond habitually and emotionally to certain triggers. This reaction has to do with the amygdala, the part of the brain that's been referred to as our emotional processor. Here's a research-backed, 3-step method for hacking your brain--so you can make emotions work for you, instead of against you. #Empathy #EmotionalIntelligence #EQ #leadership #management #BestAdvice #careers #BusinessIntelligence #communication #relationships #PersonalDevelopment #EQApplied #MakeEmotionsWorkForYouNotAgainstYou …see more

Justin BarisoShould you abbreviate emotional intelligence as "EI" or "EQ"? Most researchers & academics prefer EI. But the term EQ (shorthand for “emotional intelligence quotient”) has become more popular and is even recognizable in multiple languages. This makes sense, if you think about how we use another term in daily conversation: “IQ.” If we say someone has a high IQ, that doesn’t mean we’ve seen their test results; it means that we think they’re smart. Or, in sports, when we say someone has a high basketball or football IQ, it means they understand the rules and strategy of the game more than the average person. This ability isn’t really measured, but it’s practical and easy to understand. Similarly, when we speak about a person’s EQ, we mean their ability to understand emotions and how they work. Of course, the value of that knowledge is limited if it can’t be put to use. In other words, true emotional intelligence (EI) = EQ, applied. Want to learn more about how to make emotions work for you, instead of against you? Amy BlaschkaIn the workplace, effectively communicating authentic appreciation and encouragement isn’t one-size-fits-all, nor is it restricted to a single language of appreciation. The best way to express your gratitude in the workplace starts with asking others their preferences so you can better relate to one another and deepen your relationships. There are five languages of workplace #appreciation : Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Acts of Service, Tangible Gifts, and Appropriate Physical Touch. This week, we’ve broken down how to effectively communicate using them, actions you can take to support each style, and things to avoid. #5: APPROPRIATE PHYSICAL TOUCH🖐 How To Communicate This language uses appropriate physical touch to demonstrate appreciation. Actions To Take Offer a high five, handshake, fist bump, or a pat on the back when acknowledging someone for a great job. These spontaneous displays of celebration help build positive work-based relationships. Things To Avoid Personal boundaries are important to keep in mind with this language of appreciation, so avoid unwanted touch. #leadership #communication …see more

Bertalan Meskó, MD, PhDOur holiday-related Instagram quiz sparkled a lot of interest. Is it really true that such a patch exists that alerts you before you get sunburnt? What's the name of the device that buzzes for dehydration? And so on. So here you are, my hitchhiker's (and vacationer's) guide to holidays! About wristbands that measure water in your blood with infrared light: I don't believe they are accurate enough (if they're not accurate for heart rate, forget about proper hydration levels). Apps that regularly remind you to drink water to avoid dehydration: You might be surprised, but I don't think we need a device for every drop of fluid, every blink, and every breath we take. But, challenge me if you know any concrete cases one needs a ding-ding for each glass of water. Wearable patches that measure sun exposure and notify the user when they are about to get sunburnt: I haven't seen that in practice - as far as I know, L'Oréal only came out with it as a pilot. I would gladly try them though! Dermatology apps that identify rashes and mysterious insect bites: I have tried First Derm by iDoc24 and I've had a good experience with them. It definitely won't hurt if you download it before setting off! #DigitalHealth #Holidays #DigitalHealthApps #HealthTech #FutureOfHealthcare …see more

Justin BarisoPOP QUIZ: What do you think is the best motivator for employees? a. cash b. free pizza c. praise and commendation Dan Ariely, Duke professor of psych. and behavioral economics, shared an experiment in which employees working at a semi-conductor factory were promised 1 of 3 things if they could assemble a certain number of chips per day: • A cash bonus of about $30 • A voucher for a free pizza • A complimentary text message of “Well done!” from the boss Interestingly, pizza was the top motivator on day 1—increasing productivity by 6.7 percent over the control group. This is surprising considering the cash only motivated a 4.9 percent increase...and actually resulted in a 6.5 percent drop in productivity for the week. But even more interesting was what turned out to be the biggest motivator: The compliment. Barry W. EnderwickSome folks think Netflix launched streaming fully formed. The reality is that when streaming launched, nothing about it could be considered "great." The streaming quality wasn’t there and the library of titles available to watch was sub-par. Which is why it was launched as a free add-on for subscribers. Also, at-launch, you could only watch via a PC. Then, eventually a Mac. But the challenge the company faced was how to tap into the TV. Smart TVs and internet-connected DVD players were not widespread. Enter gaming consoles. Why? Because the goal was to get Netflix on as many internet-connected devices as quickly as possible. And game consoles already had installed user bases in the tens of millions and their consoles were all connected to the internet. So Netflix partnered with Microsoft XBOX, Sony PS3, and, believe it or not, Nintendo Wii. This was a mock-up of the sticker used on XBOX360 LIVE Gold physical packaging from 2008. Note the title count (12,000) and the rarely defined free trial duration. This was before the move to a 1-month free trial. #streaming #netflix #microsoft #nintendo #sony #ps3 #xbox #wii #streaminghistory #OTT #netflixhistory …see more

Barry W. EnderwickAt Netflix , we used the Brand Attributes to shape how we wrote and how we designed. Brand Attributes are the tone/voice of everything a company does. And not just copywriting but visuals as well. And no, not everything created on behalf of, or by, a company has to have all of them expressed at once. But it better have at least one. Below are the Netflix Brand Attributes that were in place for my entire 11-year run working there: Smart – Not smart aleck. We talk to people, not down to people Human – We’re one-on-one. We’re personal, not corporate. Straightforward – We are simple and easy, not terse or clinical. Enthusiastic – But not “salesy”. Challenger – Not maverick, but we are a little irreverent. Trustworthy – We are substantial, reliable, and stable. You can see how some of those played out visually and in copy in this old worksheet of buttons used for email and the non-member site from around 2007. Everything about the buttons from the use of the Gotham font, to the rounded corners, to the language used, was guided by those Brand Attributes. …see more

In my newest video, I show the most severe effects of sleep deprivation along with the most important aspects of sleep quality. Then we arrive at my favorite part of health tracking: sleep monitoring and a smart sleep alarm - two features that literally changed my life. From tomorrow morning, they can change yours too. Start experimenting with sleep tracking, then tell me about your progress! #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #health #healthy #video #youtube #studio #sleeptracking #sleepmonitoring #smartalarm #smartsleepalarm …see more

Carson TateYou can synthesize happiness according to Dan Gilbert. Human beings have something that we might think of as a "psychological immune system." A system of cognitive processes, largely non-conscious cognitive processes, that help them change their views of the world, so that they can feel better about the worlds in which they find themselves. In his surprising TedTalk he explores the science of happiness and how we have a lot more power than we think to be happy. …see more

Julie KligerGot A Heart? Read This News About Blood Pressure Turns out there are “three B’s” we should focus on when we think about our heart health: Blood pressure, Blood glucose (sugars), and Blood cholesterol. People with high blood pressure are also more likely to have higher cholesterol and blood glucose levels. And this is important because heart issues still kill many more Americans than other diseases. Recent studies have found that for every 10 mm increase in systolic blood pressure, the risk of calcium deposits and cardiovascular events rose accordingly. The ideal strategy for optimal health is to focus on all risk factors — blood cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure. This might be boring but it’s important: Maintaining a healthful diet, exercising, not smoking and consuming alcohol only in moderation is good for your heart health. …see more

Neil HughesNot all doors on an escape route will be Fire doors and not all Fire doors will be Escape Doors. So I've seen a few posts and conversations recently regarding Fire Door Inspections, Fire risk assessments etc. The conversations seem to revolve around whether a inspection should include all doors or only designated fire doors and should they have and follow a FRA. Maybe a few people are missing the point and maybe missing an opportunity. For example the last door to escape the building is not likely to be Fire Door because it doesn't form part of a compartment. Does that mean the Inspector would leave if out of their scope? If a door is on an escape route but isn't necessarily a FD30 or FD60 should it still be inspected against BSEN179 and/or BSEN1125? yes it should. so maybe there are a number of doors in a building that aren't necessarily Fire doors but do form part of an escape route and are integral to life safety, yet the discussions seem to be about just the Fire doors. If you or your company would like to expand their knowledge and possibly increase revenue talk to Abloy UK or sign up for the Abloy Foundation course here: https://lnkd.in/dRwMXdT #Abloy #doorsets #firedoors #firesafety #doors #lifesafety #fire #locks …see more

Michelle ChaffeeIf you are not familiar with Juneteenth and want to learn more about the history, this is a good start. We should have all been celebrating this day with our fellow Americans who are descendants of slaves. We should have all been celebrating the end of the nightmare that was slavery. I think if we had we wouldn't have quite so much work still to do today. Let's celebrate the freedom that was fought for and won and mark Juneteenth 2020 as a beginning of real recognition and a united effort to move toward complete equity and freedom. https://lnkd.in/dBw6EYk …see more

Karen GrossFour tough issues for kids post election that need to be explained by someone (whether at home or in school or after school: (1) why do we have an electoral college? Kids think you get the most votes, you win (not a silly idea); (2) Why would someone be nasty to so many people and get away with it? and (3) Why does he keep changing his mind? and (4) Will any of my friends be sent away from the US -- or not allowed to work?
