This is how the various Crypto Pyramid Schemes work. If you've a degree of influence or some credibility: 1)Buy your Coin of choice. 2)Pump it as much as you can. Leverage the power of today's media that loves articles that look fantastical and drive clicks.  3)Make outlandish predictions about it's growth. 4)Recruit others, They hear this & buy in ( so the price goes up) 5)You now have an army of people who will now pump & hype the currency for you and passionately so, after all they have skin in the game.  6)By now you have a good growth history and trajectory.  7)You celebrate those who you recruited earlier to "predict the growth" which now means the world thinks those people somehow objectively can see the future or knew more.  8) People now listen to those "gurus" , and thus their predictions inherently drive growth.  And here's the thing. Since all assets prices are set by trust and confidence, the currency could create its own sustainable value & everyone is exonerated and smug. Or probably 99% of the time the whole thing crashes. But I promise you this. 99.9999999% of the people promoting these things are people who own this stuff and are pumping it irrationally to create their own wealth. The more outrageous the headline the better. That’s why this is dangerous. …see more

Here are the FDA-approved Artificial Intelligence-based algorithms in medicine and healthcare! It was designed and created by The Medical Futurist to give a clear picture about the state of A.I. in medicine and healthcare with an emphasis on FDA regulations. As I couldn't find a reliable and constantly updated database of every FDA approval for artificial intelligence-based algorithms, I decided to scan through a lot of peer-reviewed papers and FDA documents to create one so you don't have to. Interview with Charlie Hoehn : "THE OPPOSITE OF PLAY ISN'T WORK, IT'S DEPRESSION." There’s a strong evolutionary component to play. Our bodies were built to hunt and gather and move. Humans aren’t meant to stay still. “The research is pretty clear. They have done experiments. They’ve deprive animals of play—they give them love, nurturing, food, shelter, all the things they need to survive— but they deprive them of play, the animal inevitably grows up to be socially and emotionally crippled," Charlie said. Charlie calls it “chronic-play deprivation.” And I think many people suffer from that. It’s the transition from childhood to adulthood. Statistically, children laugh an average of 300 times a day. But adults laugh an average of 3-5 times a day. Charlie said he was approaching life “so seriously and joylessly. And very much in terms of what’s the output, what’s the income, what’s the money pay-off.” What’s the pay-off? I had to repeat that line. Since there never was a pay-off. It’s always a false promise society wants us to believe. So I asked, “How did you learn to play again?” THREE STEPS TO PLAY STEP #1: http://bit.ly/2tK3wFK …see more

When my book, The Guide to the Future of Medicine came out, I released an infographic about the 40 trends of digital health. I wanted to visualize the trends and innovations that shape the future of medicine from 3 perspectives: - Which stage of the delivery of healthcare and the practice of medicine is affected by that (Prevent & Prepare; Data Input & Diagnostics; Therapy & Follow-up; and Outcomes & Consequences); - Whether it affects patients or healthcare professionals; - The practicability of it (already available – green boxes; in progress – orange boxes; and still needs time – red boxes) The infographic represents the way I see the development of key trends and innovations in the process of delivering healthcare. Researchers at the University of Tübingen tried to train an A.I. to learn to identify a specific fish called tench on pictures. When they looked into the A.I. to see how it tries to identify that fish, they found out that the #AI was looking for human fingers against a green background as most of the tench photos in the training data featured a fisherman holding the fish in their hands after catching it. Can you imagine how useful it would be in medicine to point out such things before an algorithm is developed? This way, we could avoid so many false negatives, false positives and bias built into the algorithms. For example, radiologists looked at the ChestXray14 dataset of X-ray images and discovered that many of the images of patients with pneumothorax had a chest drain on the image as treatment already started when doing the X-ray. A #MachineLearning algorithm tasked with identifying X-rays of pneumothorax would probably look for the drain in the images as a perfect sign of the condition (they have to perform as well as humans would do, not learn to diagnose the condition), this way, missing patients with the condition who have not been treated yet. Can you think of an example in your practice (medical or not) where such subtle observations exist? …see more

SOME THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT STUDENT LOAN DEBT - 44 MILLION Americans are in student loan debt. - There is $1.5 TRILLION in student debt., up from $200 billion in 2004. - Income for people ages 18-35 have gone DOWN since 1992. - At age 18, you can BORROW $200,000 but you can't drink a beer. - Student loan debt is the ONE debt that doesn't go away in a bankruptcy. The government WILL go after you. - Because of this, college tuitions have gone up TEN TIMES FASTER than inflation since 1977 (healthcare has gone up 3x faster). - 50% of students have student loans. Up from 15% in 1989. - The president of Quinnipiac College (where?) makes $3.5 million in salary (I just use this as an example to show where these rising tuitions are going). This has led to rising income inequality, less young entrepreneurs and innovation. Solutions: - relief of student loan debt so America remains in the lead of innovation. - Accreditation of online universities: increasing supply will reduce price. - system where investors can "buy" 10% of future income. Moving funding into the private sector. - spread awareness of companies that do not require a degree: Examples: Google, Hilton, Apple, IBM, Bank of America, Ernst & Young, etc. don't require a degree. #college #success …see more

You guide users through a certain sequence of experiences, from trigger to action, to reward, to investment. Repetition matters here! The more often users run through them, the more likely they are to self-trigger. To understand Fortnite’s staying power with players, it’s important to understand the game’s Hooked Model. In my book, I describe Hooks as “experiences designed to connect the user’s problem with the company’s product with enough frequency to form a habit.” Here are the five steps of the Hooked Model: -External Trigger: Prompts us to action and tell us what to do next (invites to join friends in the game) -Internal Trigger: feelings we seek to escape (boredom, seeking connection) -Action: the simplest behavior is done in anticipation of a reward (accepting that invite) -Reward: relief from the “itch” of the trigger (variability within the game) -Investment: what the user puts into the product to improve with use ( customization and personalizations) Fortnite’s amazing success is no accident. #Fortnite #Hooked #InternalTrigger …see more

How do we create habit-forming products? First, start by understanding what drives our actions. Dr. BJ Fogg at Stanford University developed a model showing that in order to initiate any and all behaviors, a product needs three things: 1. The user must have sufficient motivation: Why are they using the product? 2. The user must have the ability to complete the desired action: How easy is it to use the product? 3. A trigger must be present to activate the behavior: Is there a clear call to action? The Fogg Behavior Model tells us that if any component of this formula is missing or inadequate. #Hooked #ProductDesign #UX #HabitFormation …see more

A few years ago, Google went on a mission: Discover how to build the perfect team. The study was code-named "Project Aristotle," a tribute to the famous philosopher's belief that it's possible to have a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. . After poring through the data, the researchers clearly ranked one factor as most important: Psychological safety. Google describes it this way: "In a team with high psychological safety, teammates feel safe to take risks around their team members. They feel confident that no one on the team will embarrass or punish anyone else for admitting a mistake, asking a question, or offering a new idea." In other words, Google discovered that for teams to work well together, team members must feel comfortable enough to be themselves. Then, and only then, can they contribute to their full potential. When we reach the point that even your neighbor talks about telemedicine, or your high school niece is about to take a genetic test, you know that digital health is ubiquitous. It's already a buzzword. But how do you know which of the digital health breakthroughs have a historical significance beyond the daily hype? Because digital health leads to way more than exciting gadgets and high-end wellness services. Digital health is a cultural transformation and since the day I started focusing my research on that, I've known that this transformation would be a great challenge. So, we thought that showing a timeline of the major milestones that led us here might help you get a clear picture about where digital health stems from and where it is going. It gives you context about the major innovations. It shows events that have a historical effect not only on digital health, but also bring about the cultural transformation we all look forward to. Even medical professionals and policy makers confuse these two terms, so I invented the Gary-rule as a simple guideline: If a technological issue comes up in a healthcare setting and we have to call Gary, the IT guy, as he is alone capable of solving it, it’s an IT issue. If Gary is not enough to solve the issue because more stakeholders must get involved, it’s digital health. The last step to becoming indistractable is to prevent distraction with pacts. Pacts are decisions we cement well in advance of the temptations we know might come and there are three types that can help us stay productive: effort pacts, price pacts, and identity pacts. Effort pacts are precommitments that involve increasing the amount of effort required to do something you don’t want to do. Adding additional friction forces you to ask if a distraction is really worth the extra effort. Price pacts put money on the line to help you stay productive. If you stick to your intended behavior, you keep the cash. If you get distracted, you forfeit your funds. The most powerful of all these pacts, though, is the identity pact. Your self-image has a profound impact on your behavior. By taking on a new identity, you empower yourself to make decisions based on who you believe you are. If you tell yourself you are the kind of person who is easily distracted, it becomes true. However, if you believe that you are indistractable, you empower yourself to respond healthily to whatever distractions get in your way. You aren’t somebody with a “short attention span” or an “addictive personality.” You’re indistractable! #Indistractable #BehaviorChange #Pacts …see more

I just came across a great paper describing the difference between anonymization vs pseudonymization. Both represent important methods for protecting the privacy of patients whose data take part in studies and are analyzed by artificial intelligence. Currently, these are the most widely used privacy preservation techniques for medical datasets: 1) Anonymization is the removal of private data from a medical record. Simply, they delete parts of data such as name, gender or age. 2) Pseudonymization is the replacement of sensitive entries with artificially generated ones. They simply replace data such as name, gender or age with synthetic ones. It's harder than it sounds. Interestingly, the paper concludes that "De-identification by naive anonymization or pseudonymization alone must therefore be viewed as a technically insufficient measure against identity inference." But authors don't leave us in the dark, but recommend techniques that can indeed enhance patients' privacy. Distraction is dangerous. Perception mistakes caused by healthcare practitioners while working in hospitals, injure hundreds of thousands of Americans annually. A group of nurses at the University of California, San Francisco wanted to figure out why this was happening. Here’s what they found 👇 The reason people were being given the wrong medication was because nurses were distracted. Seriously! When nurses were dosing out medication for patients, they were interrupted, on average, ten times per dosing round. These constant interruptions were the source of avoidable mistakes. So, how did they address this? They didn’t need to spend millions on a new program or technology. Nurses wore cheap plastic vests that read, “drug round in progress. Do not disturb.” Mistakes dropped by 88%. Whether it’s finishing a project for work or dosing out life-saving medicine, we cannot do our best work when we’re constantly being interrupted. Do you sometimes feel like a nurse constantly interrupted and distracted? How do you block out distractions? I hear more and more about Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) while learning about artificial intelligence but I haven't been able to comprehend it properly. Now I just heard a good analogue and I thought I would share it with you. There is a painter who wants to create better and better fake Picasso paintings and a policeman who wants to spot these fakes with an increasing efficiency. What happens is that the painter keeps getting better at making fakes, while the policeman keeps getting better at detecting those. The two models keep trying to beat each other and after many iterations, the painter creates images indistinguishable from a real Picasso. This was the goal of the whole GAN. It's crucial in medicine where privacy concerns limit the amount of available data because GANs can fill in the missing data, making it possible to produce entirely fabricated patient datasets that are just as useful for training AI as the real thing. #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #AI #artificialintelligence #chess #deeplearning #machinelearning #TMFchessjourney …see more

What factors affect the likelihood of any particular human action? Research suggests that six “Elements of Simplicity” play a significant role. According to BJ Fogg of Stanford's Persuasive Technology Lab, ‘non-routine’ is one of these six elements. This can entail sticking to a routine, even in the face of other barriers, in hopes of maintaining simplicity. For example, someone could potentially pay more for gas at a given station because it is familiar and simple to do so. Check out the article in the comments to read more on this! An important part of building a habit-forming product is finding the right reward mechanic. In May 2007 a Q&A website named Mahalo utilized a special incentive to get users to ask and answer questions: Money. People who submitted a question offered a bounty in the form of a virtual currency, the best response received the bounty, and could be exchanged for real money. At its high point, 14.1 million users visited the site monthly. But over time, users began to lose interest. As Mahalo struggled to retain users, another Q&A site began to boom: Quora . Unlike Mahalo, Quora didn’t offer money as a reward. So why have users remained highly engaged with Quora? Because people did not want to use a Q&A site to make money. Quora instituted an upvoting system that reports user satisfaction with answers and provides a steady stream of social feedback. Quora’s social rewards have proven more attractive than Mahalo’s monetary rewards. Only by understanding what truly matters to users can a company correctly match the right reward to their intended behavior. #Hooked …see more

I only know that because when I've been on the floor and in pain (bad business, bad breakup, bad breath, bad everything), these four things have been the only thing that have helped. When at bottom, all of this is BS: Not knowing what stock to pick. Or what "crypto" to pick. Or what conversation topic would be hot at a cocktail party. Or even having money in the bank. Nothing would help except those four areas of health. That saved my life. One day, one week without all four being checked off each day, and my life slips. I don't want my life to slip. I want it to compound every. Please let me stay disciplined and be good and be helpful. BUT...so many people asking me now about Bitcoin. So many scams out there. Will digital technologies replace physicians? No. But do check out my infographic on how different medical professions will be impacted by automation! I created it by looking at the top 20 medical specialties and the impact of automation on them. On one axis, I differentiate between more repetitive and more creative types of medical professions. E.g. dermatology versus internal medicine. On the other, I sort them out based on whether they’re more interaction-based or data-based. E.g. psychiatry versus radiology. I then inserted the different professions into this matrix and checked what kind of future awaits each. Naturally, they all get impacted differently, and here I’m focusing on the impact and not the categories. Inserting these professions into the matrix was my subjective choice. Feel free to challenge me, I’m happy to update the infographic! Full size image here: https://lnkd.in/ehU_rn8 #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology …see more

How Are You Feeling Today? According to historic research there are six basic emotions: anger, fear, surprise, disgust, happiness and sadness but new research suggests that there are at least 27 distinct emotions—and they are intimately connected with each other. In contrast to the notion that each emotional state is an island, the study found that “there are smooth gradients of emotion between, say, awe and peacefulness, horror and sadness, and amusement and adoration. In general, people can be very bad at recognizing the emotions of themselves and others, which in turn leads to a lot of misunderstandings and missteps. In some ways, professional and personal interactions would be a lot easier if everyone used a map like the one above to identify how they are feeling. …see more

In the workplace, effectively communicating authentic appreciation and encouragement isn’t one-size-fits-all, nor is it restricted to a single language of appreciation. The best way to express your gratitude in the workplace starts with asking others their preferences so you can better relate to one another and deepen your relationships. There are five languages of workplace #appreciation : Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Acts of Service, Tangible Gifts, and Appropriate Physical Touch. This week, let’s breakdown how to effectively communicate using them, actions you can take to support each style, and things to avoid. #1: WORDS OF AFFIRMATION 💬 How To Communicate As this language’s name suggests, use words to affirm, encourage, and appreciate people. Employ empathy to understand your colleagues better and actively listen to them to signal your interest. Actions To Take Provide verbal praise in front of others—in a team meeting or when you’re with customers, for instance. Regularly send unexpected messages, emails, or texts of encouragement to foster closer work relationships. Things To Avoid Offering non-constructive criticism or failing to recognize your workmates’ efforts, which will leave others feeling frustrated and unappreciated. #leadership #communication …see more

Science tells us that there is a way to make progress that doesn’t involve a tremendous amount of time or effort—and is more likely to stick. The trick? Think small. Or, more specifically, “micro.” “Microsteps”—a term coined by Arianna Huffington , Thrive Global founder & CEO—are small, incremental, science-backed actions we can take that will have both immediate and long-lasting benefits to the way we live our lives. This is confirmed by science and habit change experts, who advise people to start small and cultivate an environment where doing the right thing is as easy as possible. To create a new habit, simplify the behavior down to its tiniest essence. Doing this ensures that the habit will be easy to do, which means you’ll be more likely to continue it. This creates small wins, personal victories that are deeply satisfying and worth celebrating. Because people change best by feeling good, not by feeling bad, you’ll continue to seek out the reward of that new behavior and create a virtuous cycle of growth. And that’s worth going micro. #leadership #change #progress …see more

How can you use it to up your storytelling or next marketing campaign? University of California, Berkel ey an d Stanford Universi ty lecturer, and e x-ID EO designer , Purin Phanichpha nt, joined me on Forbes to answer all these questions. Three strategies marketers can employ in their work: 💙 Human First: Think of your customers beyond just numbers. Combine qualitative design research with quantitative market research, and your intuition for marketing decisions will be much better informed. 🔍 Flare-Before-Focus: Knowing when to flare and focus will certainly get your creative juices flowing while getting the project done within time and resource constraints. 🤖 Make-To-Think: One of the ways to lower these marketing risks is by constantly testing our hypotheses, by making our concepts tangible and testable with users from the early stages until the very end. Thank you Okospulzoxi ( E-Med4All Europe Ltd. ) for sending me one! Why is it important? The oxygen levels in the blood of COVID-19 patients can drop to dangerously low levels without them noticing, also known as "silent hypoxia". Health IT vs digital health? Here is the Gary rule to clear up this misconception. If a technological issue comes up in a healthcare setting such as the anti-virus software becomes outdated and we have to call Gary, the IT guy, as he is alone capable of solving it what-ever methods he uses, it’s an IT issue. If Gary is not enough to solve the issue because more stakeholders of healthcare must get involved, (e.g. letting patients bring the data of their trackers into the practice and merging that with electronic medical records), it’s digital health. In his book, AI Superpowers, Kai-Fu Lee shares his personal story with cancer. He is definitely an empowered patient who reached out to technologies to receive the best possible care. Many physicians complain today about how hard it is to deal with patients who uses Google to learn about their diagnoses. This is why we released a free guide for them ( http://bit.ly/2CeLRsR ). I wonder what my peers will complain about when patients start using artificial intelligence-based tools that are available online. An excerpt from the book: "The fact that my lymphoma had affacted over twenty sites, had spread above and below my diaphragm, and had entered an organ outside the lymphatic system meant that I was automatically categorized as a stage IV patient. But what I didn't know at the time of diagnosis was that this crude method of staging has more to do with what medical students can memorize than what modern medicine can cure. In the depths of my own research, I found a research paper that did quantify the predictive power of these alternate metrics." #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #AI #artificialintelligence #chess #deeplearning #machinelearning #TMFchessjourney …see more

Self-improvement apps like Remente often go beyond screen-level engagement with their users. These apps persuade people to take real actions beyond the technology that shape their long-term behaviors. Companies worldwide are leveraging behavioral insights into apps like these to bridge the intention-action gap. By doing so, they are helping people get closer to their ideal "future selves." But how? Here's how: -The first session of usage is designed to be a success. If we are not exposed to benefits during our very first experience, we will likely discontinue usage. -The next session is planned for. If retention-driving triggers are not set up initially, users will be less likely to return a second time, much less engage in real behavior change. -The benefits are tangible. What's challenging is that these benefits often take months to realize, but the better apps offer rewards as soon as Day 1. -They encourage (and reward) continued usage - aka maintenance of the behavior. -They acknowledge that the path isn't linear. Instead, progress is framed as a series of steps. Share some great self-improvement apps you have used in the comments below! #Hooked #Indistractible #BehaviorChange #SelfImprovement …see more

Emotional intelligence begins with self-awareness. We often go through life reacting, never taking the time to think about how or why we respond the way we do. This limits the control we have over our actions and tendencies. One of the best ways to develop self-awareness is to ask the right questions. Doing so can broaden your perspective and help you see yourself through the eyes of others. Here are some questions you can ask yourself (or others): • In what situations do I find that emotions work against me? •How would I (or you) describe my communication style? Am I direct? Brash? Clear? Ambiguous? Subtle? Tactful? How would others describe my communication style? • How does my current mood affect my thoughts and decision-making? • Am I open to other perspectives? Am I too easily swayed by others? • What traits in others bother me? Why? • Do I find it difficult to admit when I’m wrong? Why or why not? The goal isn't to comprehensively answer all of these questions in one day. Rather, it’s to cultivate a learning mindset. How long can you be away from your phone? Smartphone adoption has grown exponentially. There are currently 7.8 Billion people in the world and 3.5 Billion smartphones! So, how did that happen? Was it all because of one brilliant company, Apple? Not quite. #Innovation is built on the shoulders of many, and in the smartphone story, there’s one company that doesn’t get enough credit: Palm Computers Inc. While the Palm Pilot was the first truly successful smartphone, the first version was a commercial failure. But it offered the team insights on how to succeed the second time. Here are lessons that entrepreneurs can take away from Palm Computers: 1. Stick by your convictions: When the first palm device failed, the team knew that they were on the right path and very close to success. They decided to believe in themselves and try again 2. Focus on user feedback: The team realized that business users just wanted a Palm device to seamlessly sync and work as an extension of the computer, not an independent device as it was originally designed to be. 3. More capital doesn’t necessarily guarantee #success : While others spent billions, Palm Computing spent just $3 million to develop the working model of their device Watch the #KalaariPodcast here-> #Entrepreneurship …see more
