I enjoyed this conversation between Mr. Ratan Tata and Shradha Sharma . Was glad to hear that over 40K tuned in live. Some of my key learnings- 1. We are currently living in unprecedented times, but we should not lose hope. We need to unite. Humans have this innate ability to #innovate and overcome when things look bleak. A crisis is definitely the greatest textbook of #leadership (This reminded me of my interaction with Mr. Tata in 2017- https://lnkd.in/e5PipHw ) 2. #Business is not just about making money — one has to do right by their customers and stakeholders, and they have to do that ethically 3. People make mistakes, and that's okay — you have to try to do the right thing at every point and take the good with the bad, but you don't have to run away from difficult decisions 4. #Success mantra- To increase your odds of success, build long-lasting relationships with people, participate in the ideation and execution process, and take calculated risks https://lnkd.in/eivwaqJ …see more

If you search the term ‘Amazon’ on Google Trends, you will observe an interesting trend. Since 2004, every year, interest in the term ‘Amazon’ peaks in December i.e., the holiday season. This gives credence to the hypothesis that when one thinks of Amazon , either in India or in the US, they think of an e-commerce behemoth selling everything everyone needs everywhere. But, what most people don’t realize is that Amazon has grander ambitions. The company has been particularly secretive about its #Healthcare initiatives. But, if their appointment of Taha Kass-Hout as the Chief Health Information Officer to Amazon Grand Challenge team is anything to go by, then they are focused squarely on healthcare as their next big bet. Amazon’s interest in healthcare should mean that #Indianstartups and corporations must create multi-decade plans to ensure that they are not disrupted. While it’s tricky business to try and predict how innovations will shape our long-term future, understanding trends and imagining new ways our future might be shaped, can give companies an edge in preparing for the emerging opportunities. #IndiaTrends2018 is an endeavour to explore the trends that are emerging from India’s rapidly evolving digital economy and summarize current opportunities for entrepreneurs & corporations across sectors. The growing digital economy stands out in scale of the opportunity before us: the 2 billion Indian devices expected to be connected to the internet by 2021, represents a potentially trillion dollar opportunity. At the same time, employability of our citizens and women’s participation are concerns – a mere 26% of Indian women are employed in the workforce (among the lowest in the world). I look forward to the next few years with both excitement & hope. My heartfelt gratitude to everyone that lent their support in this comprehensive effort: 50 industry leaders that we spoke with, the 1200 respondents of the survey, and the teams at Kalaari Capital , YourStory Media , KPMG India  & NASSCOM India . In response to a LinkedIn post calling him a rock star, Delta CEO Ed Bastian responded with two short sentences: "Appreciate the shout out...but Delta would be nothing without our 90,000 people. They deserve all the credit." "They deserve all the credit." With these five words, and the actions that back them up, Bastian teaches some brilliant lessons in emotional intelligence. "Imagining A Trillion Dollar Digital India" - https://goo.gl/99RHnf Year 2018 will mark a watershed moment in independent India’s re-ascendance as a major economic power. As per Center for Business & Economic Research, India will, for the first time since the industrial revolution, overtake both UK & France to become the 5th largest economy. The 1st industrial revolution started in late 18th century and 2nd started in early 20th century profoundly transformed western economies. India missed that boat & languished for decades. We are at the tail end of the 3rd industrial revolution and on the cusp of a fourth one. We have seen the disruption the 3rd industrial revolution caused, largely on the back of #Digital #Technology adoption, in industries like retail & media. The upcoming 4th one will disrupt incumbent business models even further. This will be driven by the technologies like #AI, #Robotics, #Blockchain etc. But, Is #India & #Startups ready to catch this new wave? To answer this question, our partners at @ IBM India & we, looked at factors like infrastructure, demographics, consumption patterns, and adoption of digital technologies. The result of this joint effort is our report “Imagining a Trillion Dollar Digital India” - Read it here:  https://goo.gl/99RHnf …see more

As CEO of LinkedIn , Jeff Weiner has unique insight into how the world of work is transforming right before our eyes due to the emergence of Covid-19. Weiner recently highlighted an important point right here on LinkedIn: "'Free' time in between video calls is increasingly being absorbed by taking care of kids, caring for dependents, doing household chores, and myriad other ways in which people are jumping from one task to the next," said Weiner. "Combined with all the uncertainty related to physical and economic well being, it can take a toll. Make sure to carve out real buffer time: to catch your breath, get some exercise, or whatever you enjoy doing that helps put your mind at ease. It not only benefits you, it will benefit all of the people that count on you as well." In just over 24 hours, Weiner's post garnered 30,000 reactions and almost 1,000 comments. While at times it may seem impossible, it's more important to your productivity than ever to make sure you build buffer time into your schedule. Let's talk DATA! I have exciting data about the industry, 3-months post corona. I will give my insights. The basis for the information is from AdviceMe.Il so of course, you can not generalize it to all populations. Nevertheless it's interesting. First - the average age of people who asked for our advice: 26-33. I can explain it mostly by experience, 26-33 usually are employees at the beginning of their careers, and companies prefer to keep the seniors because they're more expensive to hire and of course, more valuable. Second, 1 out of 5 people is a software developer! Well, I was amazed by this one. I would think that SW people who are in high demand would be the last to get fired. I can explain it with 2 ideas - first, most of them are juniors /from small startups that had to close, second, AdviceMe's branding was especially oriented for tech people. Another interesting piece of data- 80% of the people who asked for our advice had at least an undergrad degree. The higher education was the fewer people there were. There are increasing suggestions that the recent rally in gold reflects more than the usual drivers. BREAKING NEWS! Now Germany just became the first country to officially make two health apps available for prescription! Why is it so important? While only 6% of patients have used paid medical apps in the past, almost 60% would use these digital tools if their physician prescribed them and the costs were covered by the payer. One of the apps is Kalmeda which aims to help with tinnitus, and the other one is Velibra, a therapy programme for anxiety disorders. The German government passed the Digital Healthcare Act (DVG) last year and this is an incredible step forward into the era of digital health. Royal Enfield has immense customer love in #India . Remember the movie Sholay with Amitabh and Dharmendra on a Royal Enfield? But in 2000, the company went through a crisis period where sales dwindled to 1/3 of production capacity as they faced issues ranging from oil leakages to engine failures. The company achieved a remarkable turnaround by following these 3 key principles: 1. Get the basics right: Listen to customers, test the product and #design the bikes for superior performance 2. Hire for passion: Enfield hired both locally and globally to assemble a diverse team of new leaders who were not only experienced but also were passionate about preserving the brand name 3. From the Wall Street Journal: "The Dow Jones Industrial Average staged its best two-week performance since the 1930s, a dramatic rebound that has left many investors with a confounding reality: soaring share prices and a floundering economy." One can think of three possible explanations for this dispersion: Markets are a lot more forward-looking and are comfortable looking through what many believe is a temporary and reversible downturn in the economy; Markets are over-optimistic, conditioned by years of great success for "buy-the-dip" strategies; and Actual and expected support by the Federal Reserve has again decoupled markets from economic and corporate fundamentals. Depending on who you ask, you are likely to get a different ranking of the three ... with one quite interesting tendency: The closer the investors are to the real economy, the more cautious they are about the sustainability of the rally (e.g., what the Journal reported about Warren Buffett's approach this time around and compared to the 2008/09 crisis, and the remarks by Mark Cuban). #markets #investing #bonds #economy #volatility #equities #stocks #interestrates #federalreserve #selloff #investmentmanagement #investors #Fed #wsj …see more

Historic jump in the US saving rates was accompanied by lower wages/salaries and higher government transfer payments (unemployment benefits and cash relief payments). What economist are unable to assess, and this matters for what's ahead for the economy, is the balance between forced and precautionary savings -- that is, the extent to which households were willing but unable to spend (due to the lock down) and the extent to which they are building up a higher cash buffer for the uncertain times (that is, able but not willing to spend). #economy #saving …see more

Earlier this week, Musk made a subtle comment on Twitter that could majorly upend the auto industry. In response to an article in Teslarati highlighting German automakers' attempts to bridge the gap between Tesla's technology and their own, Musk tweeted the following: "Tesla is open to licensing software and supplying powertrains & batteries. We're just trying to accelerate sustainable energy, not crush competitors!" Consider for just a moment the brilliant potential of Musk's statement. Everyone could benefit: -Legacy automakers can (almost) immediately catch up to Tesla's tech, allowing them to focus on what they're good at: manufacture and delivery. -Tesla makes lots and lots of money from the licensing deal, allowing it to continue to lead the way in software innovation. -The general population benefits the most, as the auto industry as a whole moves closer to its goals of using more sustainable energy, and incorporating new technology in its vehicles. That's what I call: win-win-win. #elonmusk #tesla #elonmusk #toyota #vw #gm #ford #autoindustry #productivity #emotionalintelligence #MakeEmotionsWorkForYouNotAgainstYou …see more

Financing India's Healthcare needs - https://lnkd.in/fw2wtkz There is a need for a paradigm shift to making #healthcare more accessible and affordable. Hence, Govt. of India’s recognition and commitment towards universal health coverage through initiatives such as ‘Ayushman Bharat’ is encouraging. But with public healthcare spending at just 1.4% of GDP it is hard to see how universal health coverage could be achieved in any meaningful way in the medium term. Currently, private healthcare spending accounts for more than 70% of India’s overall health expenditure. Even if we increase our public spending to 2.5% of GDP, as envisioned, private spending will still constitute the lion’s share of the healthcare spending. With high out-of-pocket expenses, low #health #insurance penetration and high costs, financing India’s healthcare needs represents a significant opportunity for insurance companies & innovative #fintech #startups like  Affordplan . #AI in #healthcare is here and now: https://lnkd.in/fwEixiR AI powered technologies often come to mind when one thinks of a futuristic society. Of all the industries AI is set to #disrupt, healthcare will be at the forefront. Applications of AI range from drug discovery to diagnostics. As per CB Insights, “Healthcare is the hottest area of startup investment”. Over 300 #startups raised their first equity rounds since 2016, with investors pumping over $3.6B since 2013. In a crucial move this spring, #FDA for the first time approved an AI powered device to diagnose diabetic retinopathy without the need of a clinician. The device IDx-DR analyzes images taken by a retinal camera & provides a screening decision. Since April 2018, FDA has approved 3 more devices, essentially mainstreaming AI in healthcare. FDA's new guidelines to classify AI powered image analysis as Class II devices will reduce time required for approval. This is a significant breakthrough with far reaching effects. Especially, in a country like ours, where there is an acute shortage of radiologists, with just 1 for every 100,000 of population.  AI in healthcare is no longer an idea of the future, it's already here. So, I went looking to learn more about him and was curious to know what it takes to get promoted to the CEO of one of the largest tech companies in the world: - Did you know that he has held a job at only one company - he joined Amazon straight from Business school in 1997 and has been there since. Talk about loyalty! - He served in a 'shadow' role to Bezos in his early years at the company, in a position known as Bezos’ Technical Assistant or Chief Of Staff. - He transformed AWS into a $50B a year business, generating 71% of Amazon’s total operating income. #Entrepreneurship #Startups #management …see more

Lululemon announced to buy Mirror for $500M cash. Wow! That's quite of an exit! This acquisition also makes it one of the most successful female founder exists in the tech world. Huge congratulations to Brynn Jinnett Putnam , Hayley Bay Barna & everyone else involved. A few learnings from this stellar performance of Mirror and Bryann: 1) High quality products with clear value propositions win. 2) Having a software strategy and subscription model is critical for hardware companies which allows them to scale their companies in different ways and generate substantial returns. 3) Founders with strong affinity for their category, background in their industry, and vision for consumers' real needs can create magical products that scale fast. #bestproducts #femaleleadership #femalefounders #femaleleaders #productmarketfit #subscriptionmodel #hardware #exitstrategy #mirror #healthandfitness #wellness #mergersandacquisitions First Round Capital #fitness …see more

Some key insights from Mary Meeker's Internet Trends Report 2019, which are relevant for Indian #startups - 1. India has 12% of the total Internet users. Much of this adoption is driven by telecom operations, such as Jio which grew 2X in a year reaching 307 million subscribers. Affordable data plans and suite of bundled apps ensure that India is now “almost constantly” online. 2. Pictures and videos are becoming the default mode of communication. And mobiles are the devices of choice. 3. CACs are going up but can’t exceed LTV for very long. The GameStop share situation is a fascinating little story of the modern era. The stock has basically become a Cryptocurrency, held together entirely by belief and scarcity and removed from fundamentals. The stock represents the power of social media and tribalism, and the democratization of a once exclusive world. Tools like Coinbase or Robinhood are making investing fun and accessible, it's becoming the masses vs the experts, just like technology democratized content creation, fashion influence, and then commerce. It's also a sign of too much money in the market, too many bored people and too many people out of work, and the get rich easily dream of the modern era I offer no view on it, other than to hope it doesn't come crashing down and hurt the most vulnerable lured into it by our celebration of winners and the silent reporting on the losers. https://lnkd.in/dpqBvnh …see more

BREAKING NEWS! Babylon Health just announced that Rwanda will be the world's most advanced country for digital health! We analyzed Rwanda's digital health efforts and policies before and it seemed like it's Wakanda but for real. This announcement further confirms this (how many people mocked me when I told Rwanda would be a digital health country...!): https://lnkd.in/dnwswBU Here are the facts: * 10-year partnership between Babyl (Babylon’s service in Rwanda) and the Government of Rwanda to build Africa’s first universal primary care service, using a digital-first approach * People in rural villages through to largest cities in Rwanda will be able to have a consultation with a doctor or nurse within minutes over their mobile phone through the country’s national health service * Medical staff will be aided by Babylon’s Artificial Intelligence-powered triage & symptom checker platform * Every consultation will be paid for through the government’s community-based health insurance scheme known as Mutuelle de Santé, which is managed by the Rwandan Social Security. #themedicalfuturis#themedicalfuturis#themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #fromchancetochoice …see more

In terms of the headlines that will dominate the financial and general media outlets: -A record setting 20.5 million loss in #jobs (re data back to 1939) -The #unemployment rate surges to 14.7%. -Per earlier tweet, the 7.9% surge in wage growth is highly distorted by a sad compositional issue: the burden of job losses is being carried by the lower paid workers in the #economy . (The tragic implications of this are visible, in part, in the long lines outside food banks.) --Some worrisome internals include a jump to 17.6% in the teen unemployment rate. My colleagues at McKinsey & Company 's global COVID-19 response team have released their third briefing note. In this note, they describe emerging archetypes of epidemic progressions; outline two scenarios for the pandemic and its economic effects; and observe some of the ways that business can improve on its early responses. The numbers are daunting, but look to Taiwan, Korea, and Singapore for examples of how a variety of measures implemented in tandem and swiftly have proven effective at managing the spread of the disease. Congratulations to the Netherlands, which just got one step closer to patient empowerment! Bruno Bruins, the Dutch minister for medical care pledged 75 million EUR to make medical data available for all patients online - commenting: “With this €75 million grant I want to make it possible for patients to take control of their own medical data." A similar idea has already been implemented successfully in Denmark and Sweden, to the satisfaction of patients and caregivers alike - we wrote about such best practices recently, and I'm glad we can augment the list next time with this Dutch example! A big day for US markets tomorrow with the release of the first quarter (Q-1) GDP and the conclusion of the 2-day Federal Reserve policy meeting. As few expect new policy actions, the Fed's communication challenge (and, therefore, the scope for market reaction) is less in the statement and more in the press conference ... particularly when it comes to (i) the execution details of the previously-announced measures, and (ii) other measures should they be needed. As regards the GDP number, and even though the economic shut down started in mid March, consensus expectation is for a 4% contraction. Would be the first negative quarter in six years, would get close to the -4.4% of Q-1 2009, though not the -8.4% of the last quarter of 2008. Sadly, the contraction of the first quarter of this year will, in retrospect, prove to be very small relative to the one occurring this quarter. #markets #economy …see more

Before reading this news, Dr. Gábor Csató, CEO of the Hungarian National Ambulance Service, just told me about the impossibility of attending to every call on the toll-free numbers, noting that a chatbot would be needed. Similarly, the outcomes of the probe with the tech giants will likely have far-reaching consequences. #JeffBezos opening statement is an insightful read. He also addresses some points that led to #Amazon ’s success. Some key takeaways: -Companies of all sizes should be open to #scrutiny .
