The origins of this watch go back to 1921, when Vacheron Constantin created a limited series of watches just for American motorists. The idea was to create a watch optimized for reading with your hands on the steering wheel, so the dial was rotated to place it at the correct angle for easy viewing. The high noon numeral "12" is actually 30% off axis and it freaks people out when the see it. Just got out of a Zoom session with Matthew McConaughey and I'm totally nerding out but also in complete shock at how humble, wise, and compassionate you can be when you are rooted in VALUES aligned with your personal brand. I decline most brand deals. I went live on Instagram last night and I was asked “should you accept every brand deal that comes your way.” The simple answer is no. Here’s why I don’t accept everything: - You should spend more time building your brand than building someone else’s. Accepting everything will make you money quickly in the short term, but limit success in the long term. - Not every brand is aligned with mine or my company’s. I have spent years building relationships and if I start promoting things I don’t believe in (or promoting too much) I’ll lose credibility & trust quickly. It takes years to build trust and one wrong action to lose it. - It has to be something I genuinely like and think my community will like as well. Because if I don’t believe in it then 1). It was one of the first purchases I made after struggling for so long trying to build my first two businesses. I wanted to be instantly recognizable and I wanted something to contribute to the Misfits brand/narrative that I was building. It's become my brand anchor. The most iconic one for me. I love wine. Making money in the wine business is another story. Years ago, my launch strategy for #OlearyFineWines was to avoid the ancient three-tiered distribution retail system and sell direct to my fan base in 41 states. Everybody knows I hate $h&t wine and anything with my name on it has to be spectacular because my family are bigger wine snobs that I am. I blend my offerings for them. If my wife Linda likes my Chardonnay I know I'll sell millions. Same for my daughter Savannah, if she does not like my Cabernet Sauvignon I don't ship it. To pull it off I needed a partner that would let me apply my wine making skills but at the same time could ship millions of individual cases direct to consumers. I tell stories for a living. To be a better storyteller I've always looked outside of my immediate industry. Something most people don't know about me is that one of my major goals is to own/invest in an eSports organization. A company that is crushing the storytelling game right now is Blizzard Entertainment , more specifically with their game Overwatch. - Every character that they roll out has an incredible backstory. - Relatable design. - Comics, shorts, etc. - And each character contributes to the overarching story. I’m no longer editing my videos — which is incredibly hard for me. 🥺 But here’s the thing: 1). I’m an entrepreneur first & a content creator second. My business is my priority. Outsourcing this part allows me to still create and focus on my business. 2). I need to lean into my strengths, which is the messaging. The story. Speaking at INBOUND! ✅ I was stopped maybe a little under 20 times over the weekend to take photos. Because they recognized my hat and saw my stuff on LinkedIn. And on the first day I turned to Israel and said, “this hat is the best decision I ever made.” And then after my session a woman stood up during Q&A and said this: I sent you a connection request after watching a few of your things. And you responded and asked me how I was doing & what I was working on. And we talked for a while. And that’s what matters to me. I had put you on a pedestal and you brought yourself down to my level. Thank you. That meant the world to me. I’ve heard John Henry & Gary Vaynerchuk talk about scaling the unscalable. “People only watch your videos because you wear a hat.” ✋🏽😮 Before I did anything in “business” I was a singer-songwriter. I had a “brand”. People knew: - What I looked like. - What I sounded like. - etc. I approached it the same way as an entrepreneur. And while that statement up top is crazy, there is some truth to that. If there was a line graph that mapped out the trajectory of my life — there would be an upward spike when I purchased my hat. Because it helped me stand out. Made me instantaneously recognizable.
