Just minutes ago, my dad sent me this photo at Kobe's Mamba Sports Academy, where Kobe was reportedly on his way with his daughter in the helicopter. The academy is in my hometown and my little brother has played tournaments there. All games have been cancelled. Kobe was one of those icons who influenced people of all ages. He not only did so much for the basketball community, but also inspired others to strive for excellence. He was an example of how to utilize your influence for the good of others. He will be missed. As a child, on Diwali mornings, we would wake up bright and early at 5 am. Despite the chill in the air, waking up early on this day was never met with a complaint. We would then light a diya, and take a nice oil bath (a tradition perhaps unique to India). In my home, there was a longstanding tradition of the girls performing aarti for the men of the household, post which they would give us little gifts. Mom would have made a lot of homemade sweets, a Diwali tradition. We would carefully wrap these, and walk over to the homes of friends and neighbours to deliver them personally, one of the little joys of Diwali. Come evening, we would light dozens of oil diyas, often making a little competition of it with neighbours to see whose house had more. And then, of course, the signature part of Diwali — the fireworks. We would light piles of firecrackers, lighting up our driveways and the skies with showers of sparkles! This year, I celebrate a silent Diwali with home made food and togetherness of my family. I debated whether to celebrate Ugadi this year or not. It felt that there was nothing to celebrate. But the only normalcy we have to our lives is not giving up on what is important. So we got energised for Ugadi. Ugadi in Sanskrit means yuga (age) & ādi (beginning): "the beginning of a new age". Ugadi is New year celebration in South India. There are 3 distinct aspects to how my family celebrates: 1. The Ugadi Pachadi: This is offered in puja and is the most important for me. It represents the metaphor that life is a mix of complex emotions. It has 6 ingredients- neem flower (bitterness), jaggery (sweetness), tamarind (sourness), salt (saltiness), chilli (spicy), raw mango (tangy) 2. Rangoli: More of a lost art, in my childhood we took great pride in making complex rangolis. What we made today as you can see is not very complex but atleast continuing the tradition 3. Obattu/Puran Poli: In my house this is the most important dish for the festival. Homemade hot off the girdle Obattu is a treat, and that was the highlight today I wish you all a Happy Ugadi. Yesterday we drove six hours north to visit Grandma Soumis. She was thrilled by the surprise as my little boy picked her a bouquet of flowers from her yard and we caught up, openly admitting my husband is her favorite grandchild 😂 She mentioned to me where she grew up, 45-minutes "down the road" in Freda, MI. She told us stories of learning to swim in cold Lake Superior and "voluntold" my husband to take me there... From what we saw, the town consisted of about 10 homes, one of which had a "gift shop", a veteran's memorial, and a Copper Mill in ruins. A once bustling town with families and even a movie theater was left as a ghost town in the '60's... We enjoyed the beauty of the shores 93-year-old Connie once danced along and appreciated being together with each other... for if it wasn't for her, I wouldn't have my family! 💝 During our six hour drive back, dodging hundreds of deer, skunks and turtles, I thought about what has happened over her lifetime... I reflected on how each choice we make in our lives can change the entire trajectory of our future and how important it is to continue spreading awareness. My husband and I celebrated our 23rd wedding anniversary yesterday. Why am I posting this on LinkedIn? Because your spouse has a huge impact on your career. When we were first married I always said I needed a “wife”, someone who was home so I could come home and not have the traditional home responsibilities to deal with! Well that didn’t happen but we figured it out. I found flexibility so we could take care of our kids with two working parents. Both juggling parenting and work responsibilities like lots of couples. Terribly sad to hear the news that Johnny Clegg has passed away. A South African legend, a freedom fighter and someone that has taught us so much about love, passion and fighting for what’s right. His music was loved the world over but there was one song “Asimbonanga” that will always be the song I will remember him by. It’s the song he wrote for Nelson Mandela whilst he was on Robben Island in 1987. Are you scheduling enough time for your loved ones? Twice a month, my wife and I plan a date. Sometimes we do something elaborate. But mostly we just walk and talk for hours. Regardless of what we do, we know that this time is cemented in our schedules and will not be compromised. In the absence of this scheduled time together, it’s too easy to fill our time with other errands, like running to the grocery store or cleaning the house. Years ago, when our girls were younger, I always tucked a “napkin note” into their lunches, a short message scribbled on a napkin, designed to brighten their day at school and to remind them how much I loved them. Around the same time, a favorite book of our then seven-year-old daughter was “The Kissing Hand.” For those unfamiliar, “The Kissing Hand” tells the story of Chester Raccoon, who is a little anxious about heading into school. To ease his fears, his mom, Mrs. Racoon, shares a family secret called the Kissing Hand to reassure him of her love any time his world feels a little scary. She takes his hand and places a tender kiss in his palm, then gently closes his fingers around it so he won’t lose it. Recently, I discovered a photo of an old napkin note from my daughter to me, which read: “Have a good day, Mommy. If you have a bad day, remember that I did the Kissing Hand on your palm. :)” That small and surprising gesture made me smile, ensured I’d have a better day, and demonstrated a universal truth: words have power. We take note of what the other person has planned for the upcoming week, what needs to get done around the house, and clarify any issues in our schedules. Coping when you get sick or injured—it’s tough. My husband came home yesterday in a cast after tearing his Achilles’ tendon. And he was very irked and cranky. Every day people break bones, sprain ankles, get diagnosed with pneumonia, chicken pox, get their hip replaced and many other ailments that require people “staying put” for a week or three. So what’s the best way to move past being mad or irritated or depressed during a period of injury or illness? Step one. Accept the current reality of the situation. Step two? Reframe the situation—For example if you are ‘bummed out’ you can’t play tennis for three months, think ‘now an opportunity to read those books I’ve been wanting to read’ or to ‘learn to cook those four dishes that I’ve just haven’t gotten around to...’ Truth is there’s lots that can be done during this ‘down time,’ so think ‘Crisis as Opportunity.’ …see more

For #FlashbackFriday , yesterday at 3:50 am, when my #BFF Faith T. drove me to the airport for my #Detroit flight. I felt guilty asking the favor, but she just said, “What are #friends for?” Well, the best investment you can make in life is to pick really authentic, trustworthy, principled, generous, brave, supportive people to be your friends. You have to see the best part of yourself in them, and make sure they can do the same with you. I’ve known Faith since 1979, and she's the same vibrant, positive and selfless person I met at Northwestern University . She's a realtor with Keller Williams Realty - Charlotte South Park , and recently, she was the only woman on an expert #affordablehousing panel hosted by Bank of America . I may be biased, but she was clearly the star. Mothers are the best gift of nature! On the Mother’s Day that’s heavily celebrated and not enough for even 1% of what any woman and Mom does for her family and kids, reading a piece from a man who recently lost his wife, the mother of his two sons, reminded me that these types of days are exceptionally hard for many, many, many people! And with the power of social media, it only got worse. I want to send my energy and love to all the kids out there who lost their mothers, to all the kids whose mothers couldn’t be there in their lives for various reasons, and to all the kids who didn’t have good relationships with their Mom because of many different social and cultural barriers. So, I recently learned that my mom and dad often danced in the den of their home when they go home from a dinner out or some event. They did this into their 70's and 80's. They rolled up the rug, enjoyed a drink and danced to close out the evening. What a romantic notion --- a tradition I never knew about and one that seemed so so warm and loving. My dad passed away in 2008 and my mom recently remarked that she had not danced at night since then and missed my dad and dancing. She is now 89. So, I recruited my partner and he agreed to dance with my mom this week-end --- rug rolled up, drink in background and old fashioned music. Tradition revived for a night. A gift to my mom and one amazing partner I have who is willing to allow time to stop for just a moment to remember the past and create a memory. Thanks MW. …see more

Here's a suggestion. This July 4th and every July 4th, read the Declaration of Independence to your children. Even for infants, the words have a meaning; the document almost sounds poetic when read aloud. And, this is, of course, the document that creates our freedom. For the many years our now adult son lived at home, I read this document to him --- from start to finish -- on July 4th. (We read the I Have A Dream speech too on Martin Luther King Day). I hope and think it helped him become the person that he is -- filled with a desire to help those in need and preserve what is valuable in and to our nation. Create a new tradition then in your own family -- whether you are a new parent or a parent of older children: Read one of our nation's founding documents and be proud of the message it sends. Are your kids getting enough time for free play? Free play is time a child has to interact with other children on their own -- without the watchful gaze of parents, coaches, and teachers.. It's self-directed and an end in itself, rather than part of some organized activity. It's a method kids use to learn their “place” in the world. Today, you don’t hear kids playing around the neighborhood. Kids don’t have an opportunity to go to the park and run around without being protected and monitored 24/7. This is especially true with the outbreak of the coronavirus. But here’s the silver lining: we can use technology to enable free play. A few years back I heard of a similar story at a shelter near me. This dog was a 10 year old giant schnauzer and the shelter was having a hard time adopting her out...(Her previous "family" dumped her too...at least at a safe and caring shelter!!) We adopted her. Her name is Charlie and she has been a total delight. As a huge animal rights person, II think the "no-kill" shelters do a great job and would rather see an unwanted dog or cat go there than abandoned in the street.... BUT all shelters should be "safe harbors" for animals and be completely no-kill... We really need to progress out views about how we treat companion animals... …see more

This is #myboy ! It was date night (Mother/son dance) at his all boys high school! We had a great time. Aside from that, every boy, young man, (How did he get to be almost 18) who he saw greeted him with a handshake. They also greeted the Moms the same way. These are teenagers. It wasn’t just a couple kids... it was the whole gymnasium, I watched interact with these non traditional high school manners. This is very different than interactions with my daughter’s peers when she was at the public high school. Both kids are receiving equally equivalent educations as we have outstanding public schools in our neighborhood. But their cultures are extremely different..His high school has an expectation of social respect and an educational excellence driven culture. Where adult like behaviors are expected and celebrated. Every year their is a new class of young men who pick up these behaviors and culture. So my question to you... In a rapidly growing organization where, just like high school, 25% of the organization is new, how do you make sure the culture of social and work excellence is not diluted but getting stronger. A first-generation immigrant, Chicago business owner with two incredible daughters and an ambitious wife by his side was taken from us by blood cancer. That man was family. We enjoyed cigars poolside in Mexico and many drinks as we celebrated his daughter's marriage to my big brother. We laughed endlessly, regardless of translation barriers. We understood CHEERS and TEQUILLA and that was enough! We danced like party animals over lobster dinners and love. A baby in Madison, Wisconsin was diagnosed, learning her first words and taking her first steps in our hospital, attached to machines as her mother resigned from work to care for her unexpected health challenges fulltime 💔 Then we found out Grandma Soumis has blood cancer after 90 years in the Upper Peninsula of MI supporting her husband working in the mines while raising three boys and managing a family auto-repair business... The thing is, cancer doesn't discriminate. It doesn't care if you own a business. It doesn't care if you have a family. It doesn't care if you are 5 months, 50, or 90 years old. Valentine’s Day is right around the corner… And while we may not be dressing up and going out on fancy dates this year, there’s something to keep in mind this V-day 👇 In order to live with purpose and fulfill our commitments to the people who matter most, we have to live by our values. And in truth, the only way to do that is to hold time on our schedules FOR those values. If intimacy with your partner matters to do, carve out time on a regular basis for the person you love most. Set aside some time after work to watch a show on Netflix. Plan a walk every weekend. Go to the grocery store together. Whatever it may be, put it on the calendar -- because if it isn’t, we get distracted. Distractions can take a toll on even our most intimate relationships. The cost of constantly hopping from task to task and not planning our days can result in us not being fully present with the person physically next to us. The people we love most should not be content getting whatever time is left over. So let me ask you right now: How do you and your partner maintain a fulfilling relationship? Very proud of my son Ethan Hughes who will be starting his apprenticeship tomorrow with James Beswick of Beswick Refrigeration. On this Veteran's Day I have so much gratitude for every service member past and present. I have a new appreciation for the sacrifice of our military and the family members who love them. This is my daughter, midshipman first class Madeleine Sangma, on the day she signed her commitment to serve as a Naval Officer. During the almost four years she has been at the Naval Academy I have seen the gut wrenching sorrow of fellow parents who have lost their precious child because they were willing to serve bravely. The fearless courage I have seen from these young men and women, astounds me and gives me so much hope for our nation's future. #veterans #military …see more

Another awesome tradition from the other side of the globe I really appreciate. In the US, we say "Happy Birthday" or "Happy New Year." In Ukraine/Russia, they give you "pozdravlenia" (or congratulations) - basically their wishes for your life. It often sounds something like "I wish you and your family peace and happiness, and all the good the world can give you. That you'll be healthy and prosperous and spread joy everywhere you go." But, of course, customized based on your relationship with the person. Just received one from a friend Alex Panchuk and reminded of how much fun it is to share in other cultures' traditions. Had a really long chat with my daughter yesterday about going back to school. She will be a junior in college at Loyola University. PreCovid-19 she loved it. But now, she is going to look at finishing next year, She is pretty close credit wise but wanted to double major and maybe go abroad to finish her two years. It’s looking like everything is going to be online. Upperclassmen lose their academic scholarships if they take a gap year. And so begins the transformation of the higher education system. So I returned to Canada from the United States last night, and the flight home was the quietest I’ve ever experienced. Nobody dared to cough! As we de-planed, I thanked the pilot for bringing us home and surprised myself when I started to tear up. I didn’t realize until that moment how profoundly grateful I am to be back in Canada. 🇨🇦 On a sillier note, my husband Louie accidentally took two and a half photos of himself at the Nexus kiosk. As a result we were standing just after midnight in a long line with a foreboding F4 on our customs printout when everyone else seemed to have 85 or 81 and half a Louie in the place where my photo should have been. We were afraid we might be forced to return to the kiosk to get it right and line up again in a place with little social distancing, but when we reached the customs official he looked at us with a smile and said, “Somebody doesn’t like to share the spotlight!” Even in the midst of a pandemic, we can find opportunities to lift each other up with humour. …see more

My Mom never really cooked growing up...I think she’s made me dinner like 3 times that I can remember (lol), but she taught me how to solve my own problems!!! Christmas is over and it was perfect! Doesn’t matter how big the tree was or what the gifts were... and this year with covid had its own touch of crazy... but if you as a working mom and or dad didn’t enjoy it because of the pressure.. think about how you can give yourself a break next year... around 10 years ago I broke! Between year- end and tax season and Christmas I said #enough and I haven’t looked back... santa shops at Walgreens(aka my husband) because the year I freaked it was on Christmas Eve day... and so has been the new tradition. We went from 2 full size trees to a live 1 ft tabletop and 1ft grinch tree.
