Just minutes ago, my dad sent me this photo at Kobe's Mamba Sports Academy, where Kobe was reportedly on his way with his daughter in the helicopter. The academy is in my hometown and my little brother has played tournaments there. All games have been cancelled. Kobe was one of those icons who influenced people of all ages. He not only did so much for the basketball community, but also inspired others to strive for excellence. He was an example of how to utilize your influence for the good of others. He will be missed. As a child, on Diwali mornings, we would wake up bright and early at 5 am. Despite the chill in the air, waking up early on this day was never met with a complaint. We would then light a diya, and take a nice oil bath (a tradition perhaps unique to India). In my home, there was a longstanding tradition of the girls performing aarti for the men of the household, post which they would give us little gifts. Mom would have made a lot of homemade sweets, a Diwali tradition. We would carefully wrap these, and walk over to the homes of friends and neighbours to deliver them personally, one of the little joys of Diwali. Come evening, we would light dozens of oil diyas, often making a little competition of it with neighbours to see whose house had more. And then, of course, the signature part of Diwali — the fireworks. We would light piles of firecrackers, lighting up our driveways and the skies with showers of sparkles! This year, I celebrate a silent Diwali with home made food and togetherness of my family. I debated whether to celebrate Ugadi this year or not. It felt that there was nothing to celebrate. But the only normalcy we have to our lives is not giving up on what is important. So we got energised for Ugadi. Ugadi in Sanskrit means yuga (age) & ādi (beginning): "the beginning of a new age". Ugadi is New year celebration in South India. There are 3 distinct aspects to how my family celebrates: 1. The Ugadi Pachadi: This is offered in puja and is the most important for me. It represents the metaphor that life is a mix of complex emotions. It has 6 ingredients- neem flower (bitterness), jaggery (sweetness), tamarind (sourness), salt (saltiness), chilli (spicy), raw mango (tangy) 2. Rangoli: More of a lost art, in my childhood we took great pride in making complex rangolis. What we made today as you can see is not very complex but atleast continuing the tradition 3. Obattu/Puran Poli: In my house this is the most important dish for the festival. Homemade hot off the girdle Obattu is a treat, and that was the highlight today I wish you all a Happy Ugadi. Yesterday we drove six hours north to visit Grandma Soumis. She was thrilled by the surprise as my little boy picked her a bouquet of flowers from her yard and we caught up, openly admitting my husband is her favorite grandchild 😂 She mentioned to me where she grew up, 45-minutes "down the road" in Freda, MI. She told us stories of learning to swim in cold Lake Superior and "voluntold" my husband to take me there... From what we saw, the town consisted of about 10 homes, one of which had a "gift shop", a veteran's memorial, and a Copper Mill in ruins. A once bustling town with families and even a movie theater was left as a ghost town in the '60's... We enjoyed the beauty of the shores 93-year-old Connie once danced along and appreciated being together with each other... for if it wasn't for her, I wouldn't have my family! 💝 During our six hour drive back, dodging hundreds of deer, skunks and turtles, I thought about what has happened over her lifetime... I reflected on how each choice we make in our lives can change the entire trajectory of our future and how important it is to continue spreading awareness. My husband and I celebrated our 23rd wedding anniversary yesterday. Why am I posting this on LinkedIn? Because your spouse has a huge impact on your career. When we were first married I always said I needed a “wife”, someone who was home so I could come home and not have the traditional home responsibilities to deal with! Well that didn’t happen but we figured it out. I found flexibility so we could take care of our kids with two working parents. Both juggling parenting and work responsibilities like lots of couples. The last few weeks I’ve been reflecting a lot on successes and learning experiences and how I got here. And I couldn’t have done it without Christopher Padar MBA CSSBB . This week my daughter signed "two for seven" meaning she committed to serve 5 years as payment for the degree and leadership training she is receiving at the United States Naval Academy. That service will be wherever the Navy decides her training, education and skills are of greatest use. Terribly sad to hear the news that Johnny Clegg has passed away. A South African legend, a freedom fighter and someone that has taught us so much about love, passion and fighting for what’s right. His music was loved the world over but there was one song “Asimbonanga” that will always be the song I will remember him by. It’s the song he wrote for Nelson Mandela whilst he was on Robben Island in 1987.
