I’m sorry to share that, sadly like a lot of people’s friends and relatives right now in these days of Covid, my mum Eve has also passed away. But rather than mourn her loss, I wanted to celebrate her wonderful life, her tremendous spirit, the joy she brought to so many, and the love she gave us https://virg.in/rrW …see more

Thank you all for the kind birthday wishes, it is so heartwarming to see your messages from all over the world. It’s been a difficult year for everyone, but no matter what the challenge, we always try and face it with optimism and togetherness. I want to say a big thank you to the #VirginFamily from the bottom of my heart. Your unwavering support, even when really hard decisions have had to be made, has been so humbling through the last few months. I’m fortunate to be spending time to be with family and friends today (though a big party has been replaced with lots of video calls, which is rather strange!) It still surprises me when someone wishes me a happy 70th birthday. I can’t help but think, 70 - really?! …see more

I LOVE love. Even more than I love money! A life partner if the biggest, most beautiful, & most LIFE changing investment you'll ever make. Choose wrong, game over. Choose right, & you get a life of fulfillment that even the most stacked savings account can't offer - and if you're really smart, you'll have both! . I watched my mother's marriage to my father collapse when I was young, so I learned the risks of love and romance at an early age. But I watched her forge a successful partnership with my stepdad George, which gave me hope... Still, I had no idea that in my late 20s I would meet the woman who would become my wife. Linda and I have been married almost 30 years now, and I still marvel that she possesses all the skills and traits I lack. She's kind & patient where I can be a jerk, serious when I'm a joker, firm when I was a pushover with the kids. Without her, I'd never have achieved the things I have. Throughout my climb in business, she kept the home fires burning while I dug the coal to keep them lit. Linda & I dated for six years before we got married. By the time we finally tied the knot, we weren't starry-eyed kids rushing down the aisle...but we knew we wanted a future together. Happy Valentine's Day, kiddies! …see more

But when you have a dream, it doesn't often come at you screaming in your face, "This is who you are, this is what you must be for the rest of your life." Sometimes a dream almost whispers. And I've always said to my kids, the hardest thing to listen to—your instincts, your human personal intuition—always whispers; it never shouts. Very hard to hear. So you have to every day of your lives be ready to hear what whispers in your ear; it very rarely shouts. And if you can listen to the whisper, and if it tickles your heart, and it's something you think you want to do for the rest of your life, then that is going to be what you do for the rest of your life, and we will benefit from everything you do." - Steven Spielberg #passion #listentothewhispers #findyourwhy #startwithwhy #liveyourwhy …see more

Hey kids, we're one week in to 2019 and I've got one more resolution that you can still add. I'm sure you can guess what it is. PAY. DOWN. YOUR. DEBT. That is without a doubt the most important thing you can do for your future Of course you want health and happiness, and everybody wants everybody to have that, but in terms of taking care of your family and you, paying down your debt is No. 1. If you want to find financial freedom, you need to retire all debt — and yes that includes your mortgage. Craft a plan to speed up principal payments on your debt, whether that be on your mortgage, a student loan debt or credit card debt. If you have mountains of different kinds of debt, tackle your credit card debt first, because that’s typically the debt with the highest interest rates. Look at your credit card and you say to it, ‘I’m paying off your balance buddy, and I’m going to do that before July.' …see more

My little brother passed away last week. He was 18. Three weeks ago he asked to work for me after he graduated high school. And I said yes & there was nothing I was looking forward to more. To everyone “hustling” out there, please remember this (because it’s way too easy to get lost in the work): - Hustling won’t make you happy. The people (or person) you’re hustling FOR will bring you happiness. Don’t forget that. - Likes, comments, shares, etc... will not help you live a happy life. You need to find meaning beyond that. - Make sure you’re not working so hard to appear happy on social & instead just work to BE happy. - Go home. See your friends/family (if you’re able). Even if they don’t understand why you’re working so hard. I wasted way too many years because I was “working.” There are no words to express this pain — I hope the above hits some of you. I think the current $1.9 trillion aid package is misguided. Why are we sending out checks to people that are already employed? In addition we don't need more PPP, there is ample liquidity in the market to provide capital for the businesses that deserve to be funded. With the benefit of hindsight, I think 50% of the March PPP programs were a complete waste of taxpayers money. There are only two mandates we the taxpayers should fund at this point. 1) More unemployment support to those that have been displayed by the pandemic. We need to give them more time to find jobs in the new America 2.0 digitized economy. 2) More Capital to accelerate the distribution of the vaccine. Everyone knowns someone who wants the vaccine but can't get it. Why spend more money bailing out another airline that should be allowed to go bankrupt and reduce its capacity when there are millions that can't get inoculated. So far the logistics of the vaccine roll out have been painfully mismanaged. if its money that is required to fix this problem then there is no better investment. We cannot control what happens to us in our lives. We can only control how we respond. Viktor Frank's work is essential for anyone interested in living with purpose. Because his personal experience was so extreme, the lessons are that much more stark. And, most importantly, his lessons are universally applicable to all of us. https://bit.ly/2zaacxz #purpose #fulfillment #respond #meaning …see more

I’m amazed companies don’t use plugins to calendars that tell you the cost of running a meeting, and the cost of adding each extra person. It’s always utterly baffling you can create a $3000 per hour meeting unnecessarily and nobody cares, but try to expense a mars bar from a hotel mini bar and finance are all over you. In the age of zoom we seem to value our time even less and the wastage seems less apparent. We have to start valuing our time, sanity and clarity more. Suddenly Disney is out of magic, Paris is no longer romantic, New York doesn't stand up anymore, the Chinese wall is no longer a fortress, and Mecca is empty. Hugs & kisses suddenly become weapons, and not visiting parents & friends becomes an act of love. Suddenly you realise that power, beauty & money are worthless, and can't get you the oxygen you're fighting for. The world continues its life and it is beautiful. It only puts humans in cages. In 1967, I was 17 years old and had just launched Student Magazine to protest against the Vietnam War and other issues where I felt young people’s voices were not being heard. I was fortunate to get the rare chance to listen to James Baldwin, the brilliant African American writer and leading public intellectual. I had heard he was staying in London for a few days, so I went to his hotel and managed to secure an interview in his room. The conversation we had feels more present than ever during these days of protest.   “White people do not listen and do not care,” he said at one point, voicing his frustration at the continuing oppression of black people. “What would happen if they did listen?” I asked. “It isn’t me that they have to listen to,” he replied. “It isn’t any black man they have to listen to. It’s their own hearts and conscience.” https://virg.in/psX …see more

You can't do that, she told me. Cindy was a VP in the Marketing department. I was on my way to see the CEO of HBO, where I worked. You can't do that, she said. You can't just walk into his office! Jeff was my boss's boss's boss's boss's boss's boss. People say "can't" when they have no answer. --- I had an idea I wanted to tell him. If you can make original TV series on HBO, why not do original web series? This was 1995. He said, go for it. I used that first idea to launch my first company. My first clients were AmericanExpress.com and TimeWarner.com . If you can't "can't", then you won't. It reminds me of this amazing football play. This quarterback shouldn't. No he didn't. No he won't! But he did. …see more

I was sixteen when I had my first steady job and earned my first buck. It was a brutal and humiliating job that truly taught me where power lies. I applied for a job at Magoo’s Ice Cream Parlor because it was located in the mall where the girls tended to gather after school. The first day went well. My scoop skills were sound, and I could say with pride that although it was a busy day and I was new, I kept the lineups short and the customers happy. My second day on the job even busier, but I was faster. During a lull, the boss came to the front of the store. I’ll admit I was hoping for a bit of praise, for being swift, efficient, and a fast learner. Instead, she said to me, “Kevin, there’s some gum in the grout on the floor. Get on your hands and knees and scrape it out before anybody comes back in.” This request stopped me in my tracks. The first thing that entered my mind was that if a pretty girl saw me doing that, she might not talk to me. The second thing that crossed my mind was that I didn’t get hired to scrape gum. “That’s not my job,” I said. “My job’s to scoop ice cream.” Her features twisted into the meanest expression I’d ever seen on a face. Next thing out of her mouth was “You’re fired. Get out of my store.” It was the best thing that ever happened to me. …see more

With volatility back in the #markets I'm getting pitched all kinds of ideas on how we should "fix them". For example, no stock buy backs, no purchase of stocks using margin or leverage, no short selling and redistribution of shares for free. These are all really bad ideas. Everybody back off! Let the markets be the markets and they will self adjust as they always have. Volatility is not a bug in #capitalism it's a feature. Now weak overleveraged, poorly managed companies will go bankrupt and their assets and employees will be redeployed by better managers. Let it happen and we will all emerge from this mess better off. …see more

Imagine a world where the vast majority of us feel inspired to go to work, feel safe when we're there, and return home at the end of each day feeling fulfilled. I believe fulfillment must not be a luxury for the lucky few. Fulfillment is our human right. When I come across someone who, not only shares in this vision, but they advance it in a hugely meaningful, significant and impactful way, I want to recognize, honor and thank them. I was a bad boss. 😞 It’s true. ✖️I lost great team members. ✖️I didn’t realize everyone isn’t driven by the same things. ✖️I made a ton of mistakes. In my defense, I was 23 and had never been responsible for a team before. I was an entrepreneur - not a manager. My heart was in the right place but I didn’t know HOW to be a good boss. Contrary to what most people believe, good leadership ISN’T innate. It is LEARNED. Thankfully, I learned. ✔️I mended relationships with my team members. ✔️ I started to understand - and honor - that not everyone wants the same things. ✔️I started to listen. ✔️I showed my appreciation rather than assumed it was a given. ✔️I put the WE before ME. To every leader out there - it is YOUR job to make sure you are learning, growing, and being an inspiration to your team. You work for them, not the other way around. If you have issues, your team has issues. It is YOUR job to become a better leader every single day. You owe your team that because everyday they show up to fulfill YOUR vision. It’s the least you can do. …see more

Can we stop calling companies tech companies now? If you make great pizza and have a website, you are a pizza company not a tech company. If you make amazing shoes helped by 3D printers, you are still not a tech company. If you make all your money from selling advertising you are a media company, regardless of the technology you use. You are probably not a "tech company that happens to sell coffee". Companies now operate in what's best called "the modern world". Using digital stuff is like using electricity, it's just required for 2017. So unless you make money from making technology, please accept "being a tech company" is silly. It's great rhetoric, but it's now empty and nothing to boast about. …see more

Google’s investment in Jio is a great sign for the India #DigitalOpportunity . A rare instance where two competitors Google and Facebook have co-invested. Jio has already brought exponential growth to India's digital explosion by expanding internet access to the masses Now, with a partnership with Google to develop entry-level 5G-enabled #smartphones , Jio is going to bring rapid digitization to the 350M feature phone users in India. This will significantly expand India’s digital economy once again, and be a net value creator for Indian startup & venture ecosystem, for bringing people on the digital highway is just the first step. Innovative startups will now have access to a customer base that was not online earlier and be able to build state of the art solutions for them Jio has been a great supporter and enabler for the Indian startups by investing in early-stage startups and giving them access to Jio’s scale from day 1. In the last 2 years, Jio has invested in startups across content, edtech, ecommerce, AR/VR & logistics. Mr Mukesh Ambani & Sundar Pichai have expressed that India will be the tech hotbed of the world and that startups are going to be pivotal in this journey. I don’t think we truly understand what we’re missing out on while in survival mode. Each misconstrued email, each piece of slight aggression, that was actually us misunderstanding something. Each argument on social media that would normally have turned into reason and common ground. We’ve done well, but bring on normal. Normal wasn’t an accident. It’s what we choose . The gift of spaceflight is a shared perspective. That’s why Virgin Galactic called our spaceship, Unity. So, with our next test flight window opening soon and Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we’ve been making space for love, inside our spaceship. We know that so many people around the world are separated from loved ones right now. We want to give you the chance to write a message to someone special and we’ll have it nicely designed and printed before stowing it safely aboard Unity ready for her next flight. We’ll post it back after the flight for you to send on, as a message of inspiration, optimism for the future and most of all – love! Dear recruiters, I know you have an extremely difficult job. The hiring market is white hot and getting worse (better, for candidates) by the hour. We all get pinged repeatedly, daily. I mostly don't mind. However, here are a few rules you should follow to help you improve your contact:hire ratio and not turn candidates off to your pitch: 1) Don't email candidates at work. Just don't. It's incredibly unprofessional. If you email me at work (and I get these daily), you are guaranteed to be blocked and added to Junk Mail. 2) Take the time to read candidate profiles to see where their interests lie, where they are in their careers, and how your role would help them get ahead. Emailing blindly for stuff that clearly doesn't fit just turns candidates off. 3) Don't force a fit. Ever. For any reason. Don't lie. Be as transparent as possible about the opportunity. You're talking to a highly educated populous with access to data and inside company networks that you don't have. We're not dumb and we do our own research. Start with this. Adhere to integrity and first principles. Candidates actually like hearing from you about opportunities they may not otherwise have. What they don't like is to be pestered, intruded upon, and lied to. Thank you for considering the feedback. …see more

80% of business start-ups fail within three years for one singular reason: they are unable to get their customer acquisition costs below their lifetime value. Simply put, they go bankrupt advertising. I don't let that happen to my portfolio companies. The power of the #sharktank platform its that it materially reduces customer acquisition costs. Feeling alone: Saddened to read about the tragic death of CCD owner V. G. Siddhartha. I didn’t know him well, & like others, I too wondered how to make sense of this news. Who among us hasn’t felt lonely in our burdens & responsibilities at one time or the other? What stops us from giving in to despair, despondency & lose the will to live? Something snaps & you see no hope or future. Research shows that the majority of people are glad to be alive if they can get past those difficult moments. We don’t know what the soul suffers when a person dies. But we know that the people left behind are anguished for life with guilt, regret, & unresolved questions. V. G. Siddhartha, the founder of CCD, was a first-mover in the India coffee chain opportunity. But no matter how hard you work, the realities of building a successful business are soul crunching. Even with success, factors like changing markets, competition, profitability, debt, & investor pressures are ever-present. When the pressure gets too much, talk to a counselor; learn anxiety management tools; lean into your inner circle. Don’t take your life. Don’t leave behind a circle of grief. My heartfelt condolences to Siddhartha's family and friends. May his soul rest in peace. …see more

Instagram is causing a mental health crisis that few are talking about. It's not just that we are nonchalantly scrolling the height of the Empire State building each day and not doing something better. It's not just that we are comparing our lives with others that are showing off and often least happy but trying to project otherwise. It's not just the body image projected ( often photoshopped)  that's made us feel insecure about how we look. It's not just the culture of personal branding that leads to narcissism. Or that we are now living to broadcast, not to experience. Or that we now don't seek connections but validation from strangers. It's everything. It's a total shift in they way we experience, compare, project and curate life and I think it's damaging beyond anything people have noted. Lecture over. …see more

In 'Chhichhore' he gave us the message not to give up on #life , and how #suicide is not the solution to even the biggest of life problems. He seemingly had everything one could ask for: young (34 years old), good looking, successful, famous. But who can know what is going on in someone's mind and the pain in one's heart? You were a fantastic actor, I loved you in MS Dhoni and how you played the role to perfection. #RIPSushant 💔 And this tragic incident reinforces why we need to watch ourselves from the slippery slope of mental stress. Be with people who remind us we are loved and will be missed! - Being aware - Understand your lows. With strong self-awareness, seek out people to be stronger in stressful times. - Seeking help - It is only human to have highs and lows. Why attach a stigma to #MentalHealth ? The health of our mind is even more important than the health of our body. - We are in it together - A little empathy and thoughtfulness can make a big difference in someone's life. …see more

“Would you give a second chance to an entrepreneur who has tried and failed?” is a question that I often hear. 90% of startups fail and most failures are painful lessons. Smart entrepreneurs reflect on their shortcomings and apply these lessons to their next venture. They just need someone to believe in them & give them a #SecondChance . Joaquin Phoenix captured this beautifully in his #Oscar acceptance speech. "I’ve been selfish, I’ve been cruel at times, hard to work with and I’m grateful, but so many of you in this room have given me a second chance and I think that’s when we’re at our best, when we support each other. Not when we cancel each other out for past mistakes, but when we help each other to grow, when we educate each other, when we guide each other toward redemption." - Joaquin Phoenix …see more

As a child, on Diwali mornings, we would wake up bright and early at 5 am. Despite the chill in the air, waking up early on this day was never met with a complaint. We would then light a diya, and take a nice oil bath (a tradition perhaps unique to India). In my home, there was a longstanding tradition of the girls performing aarti for the men of the household, post which they would give us little gifts. Mom would have made a lot of homemade sweets, a Diwali tradition. We would carefully wrap these, and walk over to the homes of friends and neighbours to deliver them personally, one of the little joys of Diwali. Come evening, we would light dozens of oil diyas, often making a little competition of it with neighbours to see whose house had more. And then, of course, the signature part of Diwali — the fireworks. We would light piles of firecrackers, lighting up our driveways and the skies with showers of sparkles! This year, I celebrate a silent Diwali with home made food and togetherness of my family. I wish you a joyous Diwali, filled with the most important thing in life - memories of togetherness and love. …see more

It is counterintuitive to what we all have been told since childhood - Pick a #career and specialize in it. In some sense, traditional companies always encouraged senior leadership roles to work in different departments to understand the business more holistically. The high noon numeral "12" is actually 30% off axis and it freaks people out when the see it. Just a little reminder for the UK. For some lockdowns mean a little more time with the kids, a bit more working from the spare room, a bit more cosying next to loved ones. Perhaps time to tidy the house or plant bulbs or start a new craft project in the workshop. Another box set to gorge on TV. For others they mean the removal from life of seemingly absolutely everything they live for, the destruction of their livelihoods, sudden removal of any hope for the future. The chance of feeling alive vanish until a time they can't imagine. They mean day after day spent alone, or trapped with abusive partners, time away from dying loved ones, or people they planned to marry trapped in other countries. They mean lost dreams, lost deposits, lost savings, people dying alone, and funerals where people never get to say goodbye. They mean unemployment for years to come, crippling anxiety, the need to give up on dreams. They mean suicide, mental health issues, substance abuse issues. They don't mean a lost year, they mean a widespread massive loss of ANY sense of meaning or purpose or routine or belief in the or their future. After my step Dad graduated from the University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana he took a job with the ILO as a productivity expert and our family began to travel the world moving to a new country every two years. I've been everywhere, Cyprus, Cambodia, Tunisia, Ethiopia and all over Europe. During our travels George introduced me to the most eclectic foods and wines the world has to offer. I was particularly fond of German Black Forest Cake. To make this delicacy you need to understand the delicate balance between the cream, the kirsch soaked cherries, the chocolate cake layers and the crispy thin brittle chocolate that provides the subtle "crunch". Today, most attempts to make Black Forest Chocolate Cherry Cake are dismal failures. No one wants to invest the time it takes. I am changing all that. I have been working with a team of pastry chefs for 5 months to bring the world's best back. I made the way it was baked decades ago, no corners cut! Now I am about to unleash it on the world. Success isn't simple - it can change a person, make you be less kind to the hospitality person who brings you your food, take your staff for granted, neglect your family. It's easy to be a rich jerk - but rich jerks are usually lonely jerks, and after eventually they realize that success is meaningless when you're alone - even when you're alone in a pile of money! You've got to stay grounded. The key to that is RESPECT. Respect the guy who sells you your coffee in the morning. Respect your office admin. Respect your wife. You didn't get successful on your own! I got a glimpse of his #life reading "Travelling to Infinity" by his wife, Jane Hawkins. It made me think at many levels. He would have been 79 today (DOB: Jan 08, 1942). Reducing expectations to zero is a powerful thought; it doesn't mean you give up. It means it frees you from fear and failure. Also, no expectations mean you free yourself from external recognition to validate your work and achievements. This is so apt for Hawkins, who was never awarded a Nobel prize, although, in 2020 (two years after his passing), a Nobel prize was given for his work on black holes, which came too late for Hawkins. #Inspiration #Motivation #WhatInspiresMe …see more
