I've been waiting for this moment for months! Npj digital medicine, the digital health journal of Nature Research (Publishing) , published our original research about artificial intelligence-based FDA-approved medical devices and algorithms. It's our first publication in such a high-level journal. We aimed at filling two gaps: 1) The FDA should assess and approve A.I.-based medical devices and algorithms differently from others. 2) There should be an accessible database of such algorithms and devices as the FDA's website doesn't make it possible. Our team put a huge effort into creating an open access database and as the paper is available to everyone for free, please use it and share it if you find it useful! If you find any new items or we have missed something, please send your submissions, we'll cross-check it and update the database constantly. Hopefully, the FDA will soon take control over the database as they have the right resources to keep it growing. A few months or so I got an email saying that I was accepted to be a speaker at INBOUND. 🎤 😯 Which will officially be the largest speaking engagement I’ve ever done. I just kicked off the year with a keynote for Roche about the mindset pharma company leaders should have in 2020 to embrace patient empowerment, digital health technologies and the cultural transformation that's going on in healthcare. I loved every minute of it and tried to press ""patient design"" as hard as I could. Companies must involve patients at the highest level of decision-making. I was recently featured in Forbes thanks to Brian Collins . I left a few nuggets of wisdom for the reader: Psychologists have verified that if you plan ahead, if you decide what it is you want to do and what time you want to do it, you become much, much more likely to actually follow through. However, don't leave any white space. If you have white space on your calendar, somebody is going to plan your time for you, unless you've decided in advance what you want to do with it. We can't call something a distraction unless we know what it distracted us from. So we have to account for that time based on how we want to spend that time, so that we don't find ourselves wasting it doing something frivolous. I just gave a keynote to Innomar Strategies in a beautiful place in North Canada about how it's possible to bring science fiction to the lives of patients and how digital health makes patients the point-of-care. Excellent feedback, even better questions and an open-minded group with a bold vision about the future. On the photo, my amazing host, Alexandra Novis. One question was particularly interesting, A gentleman asked about the future of privacy in health insurance. I responded that on the nightmare end of the scale (Dr. Big Brother scenario), data cannot be part of the system. No insurance company should be able to raise my premium as I choose a steak over a salad live because they can measure it. The GINA law in the US is a fine example how to avoid that. On the paradise end of the scale (Oscar Health scenario), companies can only reward a healthy lifestyle by sharing data with them. The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada has formed a Task Force on A.I. and emerging digital technologies with the objective of helping the medical profession in Canada prepare for the profound changes coming quickly. As part of the Task Force’s engagement strategy, they reached out to me and asked for two calls where I answered their exciting questions about the future of medicine. I can only wish for every physician in the world to have such dedicated and knowledgeable people designing medical education for them. They know digital health is a cultural transformation of healthcare and they want to take action so every medical student and physician can prepare. I just gave a keynote at the Budapest summit of the Global Alliance for Medical Education. I talked about how disruptive technologies impact the future of learning, why medical professionals must learn about artificial intelligence and at least have to understand the basics and also how educators can prepare to introduce the medical workforce to digital health. I was happy to receive a speaker invitation from the Commonwealth Fund as these are the opportunities the whole The Medical Futurist team works hard for. Turned out that all female panelists on the Asian Venture Capital Journal (AVCJ) Hong Kong forum are part of SheVC! I founded SheVC to create a community for women investors (there are so few of us), elevate their careers and make the industry more diverse-friendly. After all, women investors are an even more rare breed than women entrepreneurs (~10% of all investors)! It was great to be part of the reshaping Australia dialogues series! The Australian Financial Review and Microsoft Australia invited me to give a keynote about the future of healthcare and I did last night at 2 am. The next keynote will be given by Satya Nadella , Microsoft CEO so I'm in good company. :) The keynote in the video starts at 3:20 and the Q&A starts at 25:20. I just gave a talk in Lisbon to a selected group of diabetes patient bloggers and thought leaders about the concept of empowered patients and physicians and how A.I. will help make patients the point-of-care. They loved it and I asked if one or two of them would be OK for a photo. This is what we got in half a minute. Giving a keynote to 4000 deans, professors and educators is a thrill, especially, if it's the opening talk of an amazing event like #Amee2018 . I've been teaching medical students for 10 years and summarized what I have learnt along the way. So I described how #digitalhealth technologies can transform medical education with patient empowerment, gamification and digital literacy. I talked about how the profession of being a physician could be the most exciting and creative one and why reading and watching science fiction helps us prepare students for the future. I woke up to one of the biggest honors I've ever been presented with this morning. Hanapin Marketing (the agency behind the amazing HeroConf and PPCHero blog) listed me as one of the top 25 influencers in PPC. The majority of the digital advertising community are Search folks, and it's VERY AdWords-focused. I had literally no hope of making it on the list as someone who is social PPC, B2B, and especially focusing solely on LinkedIn Ads. I can't express in words how flattered I am to share the list with so many truly remarkable professionals. I gave a keynote about Privacy in the Digital Health Era at the recent GLOBSEC event and will release the full talk tomorrow! I analyzed this from the perspective of the freedom of choice and used the example of 4 countries. 1) In China, the freedom of choice patients have about digital health technologies is limited because the government makes them use A.I. and other ways of obtaining data about them. 2) In Rwanda, the freedom of choice is there but limited as otherwise they don't get access to healthcare, only through digital health technologies. 3) In the US, patients have a lot of freedom of choice but without proper incentives, medical professionals are not encouraged to get involved. 4) In Estonia, the government designed the right policies to help make patients the point-of-care through digital health by giving patients the real freedom of choice. Let’s see where I got to “travel” with the virtual speaker opportunity in just 1 day: Boehringer Ingelheim Slovakia, I was asked to share the main takeaways from 2020 as well as my predictions for the new year: the progression of digital health and the importance of planning and foresight. I just gave a talk to an innovator group within a pharma company about how such a company could prepare for the era of personalized medicine. They were especially interested in how the supply chain should change and what skills or mindset people working on it should have. I described how digital health and personalized medicine go hand in hand and what methods I use to forecast the near future of healthcare. Giving virtual keynotes seems to be the new norm and I definitely learn new tricks: * People sitting in their homes are much more comfortable asking challenging questions and appreciate being challenged more than in person * Talking into a camera is just so inhuman - as many people tend to turn off their cameras while listening to a talk (understandably), you basically talk to a camera with passion * As my team controls every technical detail, the opportunities for sharing spectacular content and a range of content types are just endless More to come as all my keynotes are shifting to the virtual space. I was a co-author of this paper published in PLOS One. We aimed to explore the digitally engaged physician’s knowledge and attitudes towards digital health technologies and the transformation of the doctor-patient relationship. We did this by doing qualitative, semi-structured interviews with 11 digitally engaged physicians from 9 countries. We asked them about the role of digital health and technology in the medical practice and their everyday challenges, the ideal physician-patient relationship, and skills and competencies needed for working with e-patients and visions about the future of the medical practice. The interviewed physicians state that digital health solutions could create a deeper doctor-patient relationship: knowledgeable patients are a huge help in the joint work effort and technology is the main tool for creating a more involved and responsible patient. Medical professionals in the future might rather get a role as a translator between technical data and the patient; as a guide in the jungle of digital health. I recently gave a keynote about "Privacy in the Digital Health Era" at GLOBSEC 2019 in Bratislava. I talked about the advantages of digital health and their impact on my lifestyle that come with privacy issues (sometimes nightmares): - heart rate monitor - fitness smartwatch - dirrect-to-consumer genetic tests - a whole genome sequencing service - microbiome testing - apps logging my habits and even calorie intake - gadgets such as ECG or stress trackers that I use from time to time - and so on. The future of keynotes is here at last. 🚀 I first held a presentation as a medical student 16 years ago. Since then, I’ve travelled the world stage and given more than 1,000 keynotes at places like the WHO, Ivy League universities as well as the top pharma companies. I loved giving keynotes on stage and meeting healthcare innovators worldwide. Then Covid hit, and the whole medical event industry disappeared overnight. On July 20, 1969, in arguably humanity's most incredible achievement, the Apollo 11 mission landed a man on the moon. The Apollo 11 Command Module Columbia was the only part of the mission that returned to Earth. In 2016, on the 47th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing mission, the Smithsonian released a near-identical 3D model of the Command Module. This model took 2 years to build, and some of the best engineering and science minds in the world worked on this project. The person that designed and architected the extraordinary technology behind the model can be found at the 1:50 mark in the video below. A week of keynotes kept me focused and inspired: @SSCM - What an honor to give a keynote at the 50th anniversary event of The Society of Critical Care Medicine! I dedicated my presentation to what impact COVID and the accompanying digital health revolution will have on critical care medicine and how digital health will make patients the point of care. As chronic patients will be cared for at home or wherever they are, critical care patients will require a larger percentage of hospital space in the future. MSD - I shared the most important aspects of understanding a pharma company’s future consumers.
