If someone offered you $200K, would you use that as seed capital for your startup or use that to pay for an MBA at Harvard? I believe that there is no right or wrong answer to this and it totally depends on a person's current situation and long-term goals. There pros and cons to both options. 1. Starting a company is like jumping off a cliff and assembling a plane on the way down, according to Reid Hoffman. I agree with his analogy. Starting up is hard and too many wrong moves in a row can lead to a crash landing. But many well-executed moves and your startup can soar and succeed. Some people are ok with ambiguity and can thrive in these high risk, high reward environments. 2. Getting an MBA can be compared to spending time sharpening an axe before going to cut a tree. An MBA can help you get a theoretical understanding of business concepts and how to approach situations. But the proof of the pudding is still in execution. [How do I get rid of #NegativeThinking?] ---- This is going to be simple, but it works. And if I don’t do this every day: I sink. I despair. I suffocate on my own negativity. Our brains like to be negative. It actually relieves stress. If something bad happens to you, your stress hormones spike. One way to reduce the stress in the body, believe it or not, is to think negative. This is me: “I lost a lot of money in a business. But it was my partner’s fault!” or…”I’m not able to have good relationships!” Etc. Negativity is an excuse. And so it relieves the stress and, surprisingly, makes you feel better. But positive is better. Positive is a muscle, a habit, something to exercise and practice. I’m negative a lot. I wake up negative. Why me? Why them? Why did this happen? Why why why. The new school year has just begun. A mix of incoming freshmen and current students have recently reached out to me asking for general and career advice I wish I knew when I was still in school. I'll start with two that defined my time at UC Berkeley. What advice would you give to your younger self (including current students!) while still in school? Comment below. 1. Set and embrace your own timeline. It's easy to constantly compare yourself to peers and classmates. Whether it's what classes they are taking, how many years it will take you to graduate, or where you will work in the summer. While there's nothing wrong with some friendly competition, you will ultimately limit your own success with other people's potential, not yours. 2. Learn to get back up and incorporate feedback. You will fail so many times (I repeat many times). Whether it's a bad grade or rejection to your dream job. Take the needed time to sulk, learn from your mistakes and how to improve, and move on. When people ask what I do, I sometimes jokingly say I am on a mid-life crisis break. A younger friend asked me recently if I am not worried about how I would explain the gap in my CV. I was surprised. Do people still get asked about gaps in the CVs? Isn’t the #futureofwork a gig-based way of life? Would you borrow to get a degree (for yourself or for your kids) from a reputable university like Harvard or Stanford? Loans for buying a house, education and starting businesses are considered ‘good’ because they create assets that increase future income. But how does one calculate the (net present) value of the degree that combines education and signalling? A question I'd love to hear views on. Most business books seem to essentially have one big idea, supported by 4-8 smaller threads that support the same key idea. Yet the key big idea is often one that could reasonably be expressed in depth in 10 pages not 300. It's often big but not deep. For my book I have about 10 biggish ideas, that work reasonably nicely together as a flow. Recently watched Kim Malone Scott 's talk about radical candor and feedback. I'm a huge advocate of giving and receiving feedback even if it is a hard thing to do, so Kim's talk stood out to me. In her book and talk, she talked about following framework (photo). The vertical axis is "Care Personally" or how Kim called it: "giving a damn axis." The horizontal axis is "Challenge Directly" or: "willing to piss people off." The ideal quadrant to be in is radical candor where people around you, including your manager, are willing to communicate feedback directly to you because they care. The second best is obnoxious aggression, where you still get feedback, but the person giving it might not necessarily care much about you. The other two quadrants are less ideal since you won't be getting any feedback regardless if the other party cares or doesn't care about you. What are your thoughts about giving feedback? Genuine design challenge. I have 20 different devices in my apartment that use Mains adaptors like this. It's a mess and deeply inefficient. Can someone invent a better way? How do you deal with perfection? Many times I feel I can’t execute ideas until I know it 100%. ANSWER: #Perfectionism only leads to eventual shame or regret. Nobody is perfect, and there’s always the chance of the unknown occurring in every work. And, when the perfectionist loses control of an event, project, business, etc. then what happens? Shame results. Embarrassment with colleagues, friends, bosses, investors, and family. So my #advice: if you have an idea for a project: Start it. Start it right now. Any Black Mirror fans out there? Netflix recently dropped a new season over the holidays. Four of the six episodes this season touched on either artificial intelligence technology. This lined up pretty well with the recent spike in consumer interest for smart-home and digital assistant devices in 2017. We both agreed that everyone can take a more active role in giving. Giving doesn't always mean donating a huge sum of money. It’s amazing to me that there still aren’t great, well-known resources for women to learn how to negotiate their salary, sponsor other women, and other topics on financial literacy. Check out this new billboard. Uber's marketing team signals a stark and clear stance -- "if you tolerate racism, delete Uber." A study from 2016 (University of Washington, Stanford) found black riders face discrimination on the app via longer wait times / more frequent cancellations, and the company's leadership team was 3.3% Black as of 2019. Heard about a store ( Peak Performance)  in Europe the other day, someone tried to buy a Tshirt but they didn't have the right color and size combo. At the cashiers desk (as she bought other items), they ordered it from a nearby store and it arrived later that day.  The staff in the store were quite busy during quiet times processing such orders.  I'm not saying this is life changing, but it's interesting to see stores get it. I've done sports all my life and broken many limbs so I know exactly what it feels like to wear a plaster cast. Itchy, heavy, itchy, uncomfortable and ooh, itchy. I wore this custom-made 3D printed cast too for a few days and it's a different world. The Spanish company EXOVITE makes them in minutes and the cost is almost around the cost of a plaster cast. 3D printing has such amazing potentials to shape the healthcare experience. BUT! Would like your feedback on business models.... I spent most of my career in investment research. The options of business models were -  1) consulting/subscription (user pays) 2) sponsorships/advertising (product provider pays) 3) transactions/brokerage (user pays on transactions) 4) ad valorem fees embedded in product (user pays % fee) As I moved to education and media (and isn't research, education and media on the same continuum of content anyway?), it seems I only have the first two options. The book 'The Content Trap' was educational on how some media properties are able to charge subscription while most struggle.  Does anyone have any other ideas on how I can make independent educational content available to those who want it? According to a Pew Research Center study, in the United States, 95 percent of teens now report they have a smartphone or access to one. Not surprisingly, 72 percent of parents whose kids have a smartphone are concerned they "pose too much distraction.” In many ways, it is parents and guardians who have enabled this situation. We’ve bowed down to our kids' demands in ways that may not benefit them or our households. Many parents don’t consider whether their child is ready for a device with potentially damaging consequences and give in to their protest that, “Everyone in my class has a smartphone and an Instagram account.” Instead of giving our kids a fully-functional pinging and dinging smartphone, it’s better to start with a feature phone that only makes calls and sends text messages. And as kids get older, a good test of whether they are ready for a particular device is their ability to understand and use the built-in settings for turning off external triggers. Is someone building a Spotify-type subscription service for articles/columns from leading publications? (Or have they built it already and I haven’t found it?) Wouldn’t it be great if I could pay $10 (or 5 or 20) per month to get access to x pieces or y words? The genome editing technique, CRISPR, is making it possible to create designer babies just like how the Chinese scientists did a few months ago. How many email addresses do you have?Is it better to have just one or multiple ones for different purposes? I prefer multiple so I decide when I want to deal with what topic - personal, work (of which I have multiple too), newsletters, tax/accounts. Same with twitter handles so I can control the type of newsfeed at different times. How do we make sure our children develop healthy, productive relationships with technology? Many parents want to know if there is a correct amount of time kids should be allowed to spend on their screens, but no such absolute number exists. There are too many factors at play, including the child’s specific needs, what the child is doing online, and the activities that screen time is replacing. The most important thing is to involve the child in the conversation and help them set their own rules. When parents impose limits without their kids’ input, they are setting them up to be resentful and incentivizing them to cheat the system. What's one way you motivate yourself to finish projects? When I was working on my second book, Indistractable, I told a friend of mine that I'd give him $10,000 if I didn’t meet my deadline. I don't have to tell you what happened next. I finished my book and hit all my deadlines. Why? Because I didn't want to lose $10,000! This technique I used to stay on track and finish my work is called a price pact. I created a barrier that allowed me to overcome distraction and bring out my best, most efficient work. Tea or Coffee? I love coffee but recently I visited an area in China known for Pu’er Tea. In China, Pu’er tea, made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, is created according to a specialized process and many believe in it’s unique health benefits, such as improvements in heart health and reductions in cholesterol levels. It’s also said that Pu’er tea can help promote weight loss, enhance eyesight, stimulate circulation, and soothe hangovers! Coffee however has been shown to lower the risk of some cancers, including endometrial cancer and nonmelanoma skin cancer. A study of more than 500,000 people across the world concluded that coffee drinking was associated with reduced risk of death from various causes Tea however gets the leg up for one reason only: the plethora of powerful antioxidants and polyphenols.
