Still think the best combination in making anything is someone precocious, naive, generalist, excited, unreasonable, questioning, and a deep expert, experienced, with relationships, and a strong sense of learnings from the past. It's the tension, the conflict resolution and the massaging between the two which propels things forward. We tend to have too much of the latter, we've people who know precisely how it's always been done, who have "seen it all before", people who have "tried it and it didn't work" . Those who've don't just have closed minds to new possibilities, but would never ever try to seek them. It's what explains most legacy lack of innovation. But we've also too much of the former. Tech arrogance; the assumption whats been learned is out of date, the idea that everything new is better, that ALL the rules have changed and that their spirit is all that matters. I see few attempts to combine the two because it's likely very hard. So why can't TV people work with tech people to rethink TV? Why can't DTC folk work with CPG folk to make something that can actually make profit. Everything interesting happens at difficult intersections, yet we've assumed collaboration should be fair, polite, calm, linear etc. …see more
