Boeing had issues with the 737Max because it was too expensive and would take too long to design the entire airframe from scratch again. It would mean a whole new plane, new certification, new training for pilots. They figured out that the much larger engines , which would get the improvements they needed in efficiency ( after being slow to respond to airbus) could just about work on the same airframe. They’d place them further forward and higher up, and while the plane wouldn’t be able to fly or glide naturally, they’d write some software to keep it in the air. There is a big difference with a plane that is easier to fly, that is aided by software and one that can’t fly unless software is constantly working to keep the thing airborne.
