Each new screen in our lives has become smaller, more personal and we’ve sat closer to it. From Movie theaters (1905) to TV’s to Laptops and now Smartphones( 2006) , we now consume something specifically and only for us. Unlike movies or TV, what we watch isn’t based on us selecting, but pushed to us based on decisions we’ve made in the past. Everyone watched the same movie at a showing, but each and every social feed is unique. As we get closer to screens our eyes fix upon pixels and block out the real world. Feeds update in real-time, everything seems dominant and immediate. We stop observing, we lose perspective both on the world around us, and the notion of time, and history. As lockdowns again sweep the world, our chance to see the real world, to get perspective, to share feelings with others, to discuss to learn, not get “likes” to have chats “off the record”, to be wrong, is removed again.
