If you were to ask someone driving what they were doing, they wouldn't really know. They'd be driving with a mixture of data, feelings, and memory. They'd sense the person crossing the road will take longer because of their demeanor, that a branch could flt on the road because it's windy, but they'd not be able to explain why they feel that way. Self-driving cars use about 40Gbits per second, they learn from the past, they use incredibly advanced technology that we should be impressed by. We know precisely how they work. But a self-driving car can't tell the difference between a rock and a packet of crisps on the highway. Some see badly in the sun. They struggle with unmapped roads and with the snow for example. This feels for me how modern businesses are run. We love processes that seem objective, repeatable, we demand they use vast amounts of data, we don't mind that all their learning comes from that past. We care more than the process is understandable and the same & robust than the outcomes. Meanwhile the human guided by feelings, predictions, intuitions, bias, emotion, does a far better job, but in a way that can't be explained
