In the Summer of 2007, I pushed hard ( and won!) to get QR codes on the launch campaign for the Nokia N81. It cost nothing, but nobody clicked on them because no native apps would scan them, and people didn't know what they were. It was their first use outside Asia. Outdoor ads for Airbnb could link to real time updated landing pages featuring weekend breaks from that location for that weekend. 6 Sheet ads for Cars could use QR codes to send Whatsapp messages to book a test drive. Every magazine could make every page shoppable and bring in cash with near-zero effort. Even TV ads could push to purchase, and attribute success. You could reorder jeans you love with a scan of the label and a single press on the makers Shopify page. Our failure to get imaginative and excited about how devices and the real world can work together is nuts. I'm excited to make a new moving QR code ad come to life in Digital Screens for my book soon!
