Governments are either forward looking or backwards. Brexit is about a nostalgic dream, Trump wants coal jobs and to build walls, and we've places like Dubai, China and Korea actively embracing what's next. Generally speaking issues that divided "Right" and "Left" wing increasingly don't map out in the same way in the future. The global nature of trade, the digitalization of stuff, the rise of AI, privacy issues,  the changing demographics of populations, all make social and fiscal policies of the past a blurry mess. I'd love to see a party abandon the notions of liberalism or conservatism and decide if they want to anticipate, prepare for and embrace change ( which involves tough but necessary debates) or try to deny change, put measures in place to safeguard what we have now and to try to retreat to safety.
