As a former Amazonian who has had a measure of success at Amazon for several years, I get asked about what Amazon's "secret recipe" is quite often. My thoughts, FWIW: 1) Among Amazon's Leadership Principles (LPs), "Deliver Results" is the most important. The secret to the LPs is they all work concordantly and in harmony. But they all lead to "Deliver Results", pure and simple. 2) Data, data, and more data (including how "Deliver Results" is tracked and measured). Amazon is obsessively data driven, and decisions almost always need to be backed by data. This isn't always the case - but it's mostly the case, even with leadership. 3) Everything at Amazon revolves around one word: "Efficiency". If it's efficient by design, it's made to be more efficient. If not, it gets made that way eventually (looking at you OP1 :)). 4) There are very few sacred cows. Stuff that doesn't make money, adds value, hinders the company, quickly hits the chopping block. As it should. Amazon's not perfect - no company is, and Day 2 behavior is increasing. But it's nothing that Amazon can't fix. There are lots of instruction manuals and consulting services dedicated to replicating Amazon's enormous success. This small blueprint is free of charge. Hope it helps! #Amazon #leadership #efficiency …see more
