What does it take to become a domain expert? Start by getting a day job. Seriously. If you want to become a domain expert, you have to get domain expertise -- and the only way to do that is to spend time doing the work. In order to provide insight and add value to peoples' lives, you need something to drive you to get past that hump of having to catch up with the experts. That takes time. It takes time to read what others have written, to debate the things in your mind, to note the flaws of the way you see the world. That's a process that can't be rushed.
