"When we think that something is more powerful than we are, we give up." This is my gripe with the Netflix docu-horror film, The Social Dilemma. Yes, distraction is easier than ever to find if you’re looking for it. Everybody has a smartphone full of apps designed to keep us engaged and scrolling. But this doesn’t mean that we’re powerless. We are FAR more powerful than tech companies. When it comes to taking back our attention and living by our values, we have to look for the root causes. Distraction starts with discomfort. When we’re lonely, we check Facebook. When we are uncertain, we check Google. When we’re bored, we check Twitter. As with all human behavior, distraction is just another way our brains attempt to deal with pain. If we accept this fact, we realize that handling distraction is about learning to handle the discomfort in a healthier manner.
