Many tech critics have an incredibly narrow view of distraction. They urge us to stop checking social media, to stop flipping between apps, and to cut ties with the internet. That’s ridiculous. Technology is wonderful. It allows us to transfer ideas, explore entire worlds, and even stay productive during a global pandemic. There’s no moral hierarchy between how people spend their past time. There’s no difference between planning to go on Facebook and watching daytime TV. There’s no difference between scrolling on Instagram and looking through a magazine. There’s no difference between spending a few hours on YouTube and spending a few hours watching a football game.
